  • can't see anything.........

  • Osu,I do not support people saying the founder was wrong. In the beginning we had black and white TV,Now with advancement we have all types of things. The same goes for Shotokan karate it has developed tremendiously through Nakayama Sensei,Kancho Kanazawa, Abe Shihan e.t.c

  • The problem is his ''style'' is in fact wrong - this is very far from Itosu's original Karate (Funakoshi was not realy close Itosu's student) and is in fact very wrong. Somebody must say this for Karate's sake - Japanese are just too polite to say it, but the result is-millions of people around the world doing total BS and thinking it is Karate.

  • When we try to go back and compare how it is today..one must understand that karate has developed so much in terms of its form through continuing training of practitioners. New masters have modified it so that it will be applicable and realistic not sacrificing what Funakushi sensei have taught us. This is the evolution of karate. Perfection of it may be to the next generation.

  • Really cool there is videos of Funakoshi that were filmed in the 1920's. Too bad someone can't go back in time and re-shoot this in 1080p!

  • THIS IS A TOTAL FARCE- not even close to the style taught. Why would anyone go through the trouble of faking with a poorly concocted video and a truly fumbling kata. Still photos of the real Funakoshi can easily verify this as well as the images are nothing close to the physical nature of film stock or cameras at the time.

  • OSS!

Kata é a essencia do Karate, ver Funakoshi executando é indiscritível.

    Parabéns pelo vídeo.

  • osu

  • Funakoshi was a long serving student of Itosu', Funakoshi's students named his style 'Waving Palms' (Shoto)kan (School)....so Shotokan is based on the first real style called 'Itosu Ryu'.....All Funakoshi done was to take 'Itosu Ryu' after Anko died in 1915.....to main land Japan and renamed certain techniques, origianally there were only 13 Kata not like the stupid 27 in Shotokan today, Funakoshi was just a founder of a style (1942?) not the father of modern karate, it was Master Anko Itosu.

  • @thetruthboss

Itosu brought Funakoshi to mainland Japan to teach karate. Him and Toyama were Itosu's proteges.

  • Sorry to rain on your Shotokan parade, but Funakoshi isn't the founder of modern Karate, it was Master Anko Itosu, he developed the art for school children to learn so it could be taught in schools, the original katas we're called Chian when they first brought over from China in the late 1800's, Itosu developed them as well has the stances and blocks, strikes & kicks, Itosu gave the basic Kata the Japanese name of Pinan, when he died Funakoshi take them main land Japan and called them Heian.

  • I can't believe how disrespectful some people are and YT. This is Gichen Funakoshi, founder os modern Karate. He did more in one year of his life to promote Karate than most of us will do in our entire life. He was a great man and if you have ever studied Karate you should thank him. Karate changed because of tournaments and the fact it was taught in the Japanese schools so 100 years ago the karate was different (more combat orientated) now its more sport. Now an new change to MMA orientation.

  • @jank143 your gay-- people are so quick to judge but your nothing, you dont have the style or the brains to do what he did. he made karate what it is today so go n critic the power rangers n only let possitive ppl comment

  • Don't judge him only by seeing this video. I think that he was an extraordinary man and sensei. As anything, the karate also changed during these years, but this doesn't seem that Master Funakoshi's karate wasn't good enough, it was only a bit different from today's Shotokan style. If you watch this video toughtfully you will see that his stances are deep and long. Probably as he got older and started having hip problems, his stances became a lot shorter and higher.

  • This video is that 1936! not 1934!!

  • How can the FOUNDER of a style being doing HIS style wrong. Even if its wrong according to your sensei that just means YOUR sensei and YOU are wrong.

  • totally weak and gay

  • @Jank143 its not gay and its not weak , its called kata - a series of techniques and without kata your karate won't be good , please go make fun of some other video coz this video is gichin funakoshi himself the founder of shotokan karate

  • that jumping empi-uchi near the end is great fun, but my mum tells me off for making a racket.

  • funakoshi and his master yatsumara would crush your hands til the bones broke. It is well written on their incredible strenght.

  • omg im about 2 learn rohai!! (goin or my second degree) and im soooo nervous!

  • I can't tell if its him though, I mean Funakoshi that is....

  • oss!!!!

  • 5 stars!

  • oss , sensei

  • I've been doing Shotokan Karate for 16 years and I've seen these clips thousands of times. Supreme Master Funakoshi did not make this video, nor was this clip made in 1924. This man was a Japanese master and was created in the late 30's, and was made in Japan. It's okay though.

  • I'm not so sure this is Gichin Funakoshi too.

    oss

  • is that Funakoshi??

  • I bet you're just pissed because your trainer kicked you out cause you weren't willing to train hard and to learn understanding the meaning of the techniques and the bunkai of the katas. -.-"

  • hummmm... maybe no master would fight against him just because he can't do any correct moves ^^"

  • I cut the guy slack, just because he was the one who brought our style to us. Like everything it evolves to something for the better to the karateka community.

  • say that to a real WKF world champion. Im sure he'll teach you a lesson.

  • fake

  • I don't believe this is funakoshi...the stances and actual movements of the kata would have been unchanged in 1924. That is definately post 1935 karate. After it had been Japanized.

  • This video has been authenticated by Sensei Hideteka Nishiyama. I bought this tape at one of Sensei Nishiyama's clinics several years ago.

  • I think that's O-Sensei. He's small compared to his peers who spread Karate in Japan.

  • No way this is Gichin, I believe that he did not modify his stances to a lower kibad dachi till after the 1930's. This clip is someone of the Shotokan era, post 1935. Too bad any badly scarred video of someone doing a later dated Shotokan kata is labeled as being him.

  • I don't think this is the real Funakoshi, Gichin because : he died in 1957 or thereabouts and 1924 he would have been quite fit, he was never appearing in photos as a larger man, this body type is more like Kase Sensei. or some other endomorph student from that timeframe.

  • is this real funakoshi???
