I just bought an 86 acre farm in Ontario. We have a lot of coyotes in the area. I have a doberman and 2 lil chihuahuas, no livestock, yet. Might get a couple of chickens and ducks, pygmy goats...just a hobby farm. I'm worried about the coyotes, they are bold as brass and our laneway is at least a quarter of a mile from the road, pretty isolated. My doberman is no match for a pack of coyotes, I'm thinking that a dog like yours would be a nice addition to my family. Thoughts?
My female Maremma never leaves our yard when we leave the door open! That's what Maremmas are know for, they will never abandoned what they protect. On the other hand G. Pyrenees will wounder if giving the chance.
Hey there! You have a very lovely dog. I've always loved Maremmas and Pyrenees'. They're beautiful dogs. I recently started looking into actually owning one here in Alberta. The only reason why I've been holding back on getting one is that I live in a house, not an acreage. There's a really big park where dogs can go off leash close to where I live and i am a runner but I am still concerned about what he/she will do during the day. I was just wondering if you had any advice. Thanks!
@davevanden1 "The white dog....... On guard.... *sigh*" LOL you sound so miserable.
Nice dog by the way. I've always wondered what Maremma's looked like without that all the fur. They are actually smaller than I thought without the fur lol.
Are these dogs strong though? They don't look strong but they can kill Wolves(from what I've heard).
By the way, you might want to get a higher fence, i can jump that easily.
BEWARE: This breed is good in the house with people or surrounded by 300 acres where no one can hear them. If they are left outside they will bark non stop at cars, people, cats, rabbits, air and if a leaf falls. Not a good neighborhood dog at all. Perhaps they should be left in Italy.
Amazing breed....I have 2 girls and 1 boy.....all so very protective. I love watching them stand up at the fence and not once have they ever jump it. Great video
these dogs are lighning fast but any dog if put up against a pack will not win , these work best in teams
she is tough though she is about 130 lbs the males are bigger

Of course there is a bias here. See my video under ccoins102 for a different view of maremmas at their norm.
Try Anatolians if you seek a great LGD.

BEWARE: See ccoins102 video for some truths about maremmas. They love to bark and bark and bark unlike other breeds that are more selective.

Maremmas do regular perimeter checks.
Alerts owner to changes in the environment, mine barks if the shed door is left open at a certain time of the afternoon.
Has a good memory and instinctively remembers people of your inner circle and treats them with kindness.
They work for your protection all the time. They are an amazing dog.

@davevanden1 LOL no offense but get a higher fence. Your dog can just jump right over it anytime it wants.
Its just not smart enough to try it. But one day it will get the idea :P.
