  • The Japs had the largest and the fastest sub fleet in the world throughout WWII...but strongly contributory to their ultimate loss of the war at sea was the lack of or poor damage control training as compared to that of the allies.....that and the fact that throughout the entire conflict, the Imperial Navy persisted in using easily cracked "book codes" at sea which were kid play for U.S. cryptographers to crack---when in fact the Japs could have easily used electromechanical code machines like..

  • 21.3 knots submerged in 1938???.....that is just plain flat-out kicking ass. The battery room must have taken up half the space in that sub. I'd give anything to see the blade profile on the I-71's prop---must have been one very advanced design.

  • 19 knots, submerged? That's impressive. A typical sub could only do 8. I've never heard of this, before. =Stefan=

  • Yea I don't understand why we (US) have the continuing tendency to downgrade our enemies. We call the Japanese "rats" who didn't know how to make anything but

they were pretty advanced with their military technology in WWII. Even today, the big 3 in Detroit is having a hard time competing with their cars. NEVER UNDER ESTIMATE YOUR ENEMIES.

  • @wvm888c who actually does that other than a bunch of ignorant rednecks from the south>

  • JAPAN STILL THE BEST!!!!!!!!

  • WW2 Japan had better submarines and torpedoes but failed to utilised them .The subs were put to task on different function.Scouting and carry supplies.Whereas subs main functions is to destroyed enemy surface ships. That was what USA exactly did.

  • They had better torpedoes but the U S had better subs, and they where constantly updated with rader, air search rader, sonar, and so on. Japanese subs had a few victorys, but early on thet just targets.

  • Later on japanese submarines did get radars. Type 13 radar helped I-58 (probably most famous japanese submarine) to survive quite many times.

  • @ali4330 they can't risk for their sub, they are against almost the whole world, if their sub gone how they going to supply, don't forget they need to travel half of the world, the whole asia is under control by jap

  • i have one other picture of the #71 if anyones interested

  • i'm a bit curious of the japanese carrier but the attack sub is much more scarrier

  • Magnificent video!!! Never thought there was footage and data available on such a unique IJN sub. Thanks for posting!!!

  • Impressive!

  • Japanese had a very advanced navy with intresting and unique ships...

I believe when it comes to quality Japanese destroyers (besides the matsu class), cruisers, battleships and submarines had the allies and the Germans beat.

Makes you wonder though how different the war might of been if the Japanese were able to start construction of their fast submarines and aircraft carrying submarines sooner and in greater quantity.
