For those who can't pull the motor, just pull as hard as you can, it WILL come off (I have a Lite-On drive and it came off with enough force).

Any oil-based lube will work as long as you put not too much.

Once you're done cleaning off the gunk and lubing the motor, put it back in.

It will make a click sound and it will be all worth it.

And yes, if it happens again , just lube it whenever the motor is dry/sticky. Take care.

This worked great. The only thing is that on my XBOX 360 the motor is different. It did not have a plate like that and the cover did not come off. I just squirted WD40 in where it shoulde have come apart and it seemed to do the trick(I also WD40'd the bars the lens slides on by sprying a QTip then applying)

So, I just wanted to say that this video helped me out a lot. I think this is what's wrong with a lot of people's xboxes.

Though people should be warned, taking it apart does run some risks. When I put it all back together, the laser wouldn't read. No idea why. I never touched it or anything, but it could have been a preexisting issue. Just a heads up, tinker safely guys.

By the, "can't be read error", do you mean that the xbox doesn't recognize the disk and says nothing is in the drive or do you mean a message pops up. I am asking because I have gotten the message on two different xboxs.

I ran open with the magnet on top for awhile but started scratching due to lack of lube causing motor to Wobble. I put some white lithium grease in motor & laser isn't scratching the disc anymore and the motor spins nice BUT now the laser wont move back and forth. The laser still lights up (I can see the light trying to focus thru the disc) but it won't spin up superfast. The Red washer on the spindle is not damaged (cleaned). It seems like the auger motor that moves the laser is not working.

Worked for me. But i didnt go as far as taking the spindle out. I just put in a few drops of lube in the spindle and it work perfectly. Im sure someday though it will need to come out to be cleaned

I pulled the motor apart, and there is hard white gunk caked between 2 of the copper coils. I take it this means the motor is fried??

When I try to play a disc, it will hardly even start spinning, only real slow like for a couple seconds.

I would add that you should use a NON FLAMMABLE lubricant as this drive motor can generate a lot of heat... WD-40 would be out unless you want some really cool fire effects...
