It is also pretty common knowledge that the roman "republic" was oligarchical, or run by the rich and powerful. Sounds a lot like the corporations who control politics nowadays. Maybe we shouldn't be preserving our republic, but moving foreward to an age where we as a society are willing to help eachother! The Greek democracies had the right idea!
There have always been only two types of people in the world. Those that don't trust thier government and its leaders and idiots. The reason history repeats itself is because the vote of an idiot is worth the same amount as yours or mine. We love the idea of one man one vote but, in practice it allows snakeoil salesmen to buy votes with other peoples money. Most of the people that voted for Obama can't even name the VP. People should have to pass a citizenship test to vote. No more idiots.
