When a first purge of the party happened shortly after the October revolution, it was only because they had overwhelming numbers of all kinds in the party. Thats why they introduced very tight party membership. Communists still educated huge masses, but for a membership, you must have been a proven communist, not just another that escaped into Bolshevik party, or to play opportunists.
In the end they were cadre party, not massive party as Mensheviks were, its in the base of communist movement.

Stalin couldn't have deal with them, because THEY didn't wanted that. If you ever read Trotsky, you will see on how many levels he was against Lenin, and Bolshevik idea, he dragged lot of opportunists (like him) into his little movement against Soviet Power.

If you look Soviet Union, China after its revolutions... etc you will see that communist can make all kinds of deals and wavings, but to COMPROMISE their ideological core stance... That not only breeds into reactionarism (Deng Xiaoping, Khruschev...etc) and right back into capitalism.
Without DEFENSE against capitalists (terror how they call it), no socialism is possible.

Stalin was paranoid, he highjacked the philosophy of Lenin and brutally persecuted and wiped out any communists who didn't agree with him. Including those credited with the efficient production in agriculture, the industry, the army and even among the CCCP cabinet themselves. I think, with Stalin, it's important to remember that though he did many terrible things. Yet, at the same time, he did several good things for the Soviet Union - I think we need to be able to examine him neutrally. Note what he did well and what he did badly and learn from his successes and mistakes.
