it's called the Wilhelm Scream and is actually a guy singing from notes C through 4 semitones to G sharp - on its own it sounds like a scream, but probably sounds normal in the song - its been library stocked and used in over 140 films, including every indian jones film, every star wars film, the Timesplitter series of games, Dawn of the Dead (2004) and, oddly, two of the 3 lord of the rings films.

Broken Arrow came out in 1996... a guy can be seen doing the scream as he enters the bathroom to find a dead body in the Kathleen Turner movie SERIAL MOM which came out in 1994. it was also used in the beginning of AAAAHH!!!!! REAL MONSTERS in 1994. but I can't find any record of this man or this scream :(
