  • wow that is a great video

  • THANKS for the HQ opening to my favorite cartoon of all time, Blackstar!!!

  • did anyone else get a snow white and the 7 dwarves vibe from this or is it just me?

  • @shinobitec Filmation did alot of cartoons with similar character development. Blackstar was closer to John Carter of Mars than He-man,who was also modeled after John Carter. Filmation was that fringe cartoon production company. There stuff was always a little different than the bigger cartoon makers.

  • "The Blackstar Warrior...If you wanna see him. Ask yo momma."

  • Thank God for you, sir! I was 6 when this came out. I've never met a single person who knew what the fuck I was talking about. I'd started to think I'd dreamed it.

  • Damn! that IS clearer!

  • i did own a toy of the evil leader with his half-sword, the sword can glow in the dark.

  • Hmmm Blackstar seems to be a cross between He Man and snow white and the 7 dwarfs. Fighting a mini Galactus?

  • this has better picture clarity than most of the tv's it would of been showed on in its day

  • The "plot" of this show sounds like it was made up by a ten year old!

  • lol, what's wrong with the dude's ears at 0:28 ?

  • I remember this show. It aired later on Saturday mornings and by that time, I was heading out the door or had something else in full swing.

I recall Blackstar didn't ever fight with that crystal sword. He would fly around absorbing or shooting energy from that crystal sword.

  • it seemed cooler in 82 when i was five, but now, I don't know.

  • Looks like Zok from The Herculoids.

  • I used to love that Dragon

  • This show had some action figures....I still own theBlackstar figure.

  • @kryptondragon1973 I dont recal the cartoon, but I too had the figure of Blackstars helmet-headed enemy.

  • @MrLyhue His name was Overlord....don't know but he has some Jack Kirby designed features....

  • WTF? "I am Buck Rogers AND Steve Austin AND Conan AND He-Man,I am using a weapon that looks like a surgical torture device PLUS IDENTICAL to my Enemy. I HAVE to protect a Bunch of Suntanned Smurfs and my Colleagues are all weak dude. I am NEVER to be aired in the UK and is my one saving grace that I am not disappointing hundreds of thousands of kids.

I am Blackstar,I am so Lame,I am Soooooooo Sorry"

  • Damn when i tell ppl about this they dont remember this

  • Hmmmm it's like someone crossed he-man with the 7 dwarfs?????

  • Este é um desenho dos tempos de minha inocência!

Este dragão de Blackstar ainda faz parte de meu imaginário...

Como eu gostaria de ter um animal voador que me levasse pelo mundo!!!!

  • What a coincidence, your name is Blackstar and you are an astronaut and are swept through a black hole! This is was good show, when they made He-man a few years later, He-man's mother was an astronaut and landed on Eternia, I am sure this is where they got the idea.

  • @JENDALL714 Both Blackstar and Masters of the Universe were made by the same company anyway, Filmation!

  • @JENDALL714 something like that.

  • best i remember came on after fat albert and before the star trek cartoon in schedualling order if no sports were on that saturday or the network chooses to put on an afternoon movie over the time slot

  • lol hilarious into...

    "Hi, Im John Blackstar"

  • é uma pena que so tem 3 episodio

  • actually, Blackstar was there BEFORE He-Man

if anything, he was a ripoff of Thundarr the Barbarian

and they also ripped-off LOTR - Trobbits ???

  • I never heard of this cartoon until I loaded the intro on youtube. At first glance, I thought that he looked like He-Man's ancestor, and found out that the guys who created this cult cartoon would make He-Man. The font in the intro was also the one used for Dragonslayer. Would it be cool if they made a blackstar movie? LOL.

  • Loved this show when i was young. this,Dungeons and dragons, galtar & the golden lance, pirates of dark water were such great toons.

  • Can't believe I found this cartoon. by accident. It was one of my favs when i was a kid. i even forgot the name. you just made my day :))

  • Filmation? I wonder if Qubo will pick it up like He-man, BraveStar, and Ghostbusters.

  • He gets stuck on the planet Sega with the Hobbit people? Wait, let me turn up the volume...

  • wish i had a name like john Blackstar.......

  • Blackstar, or Galtar, or Thundarr, I can't decide who my favorite futuristic barbarian was.

  • I think everyone pretty much wanted Overlord to get the Trobbits. Those guys were annoying as hell. Blackstar only ever saved them because letting Mara's friends get killed would have ruined his chances of getting laid.

  • 0:20 Snow White reference, anyone?

  • NASA keeps sending astronauts alone! lol

  • Dude Blackstar is hood! Had 2 of the action figures. He'll break he-man down!

  • RIP Blackstar

  • don't want to be rude to the Blackstar fans but this is ... hmmm

  • Loved this show when I was a kid. Had a few of the action figures.

  • I only vaugely remember this show. I remember it moreso due to the green dragon creature that Blackstar rode.

  • I loved this show when I was little. Even had a crap load of the toys. But looking back on it. It's like Flash Gordon, and He-Man had a gay love child.

  • the pink midget ears lol wtf hahahaha

  • It's probrably just me, but the theme song sounds somewhat like Superman: The Movie.

  • i love blackstar...was so great!!!

  • One of Filmation's less-than-successful shows. Filmation made cartoons like He-Man and Fat Albert. Those were great cartoons.

  • A mix of Buck Rogers,Conan, and the smurfs

  • it looks like snow white in the beginning

  • I remember seeing commercials for this, but it was always preempted by the local affiliate playing Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. After finally seeing what it's about, I'm glad I missed out for a change.

  • CBS's 1981-1982 Saturday Morning Line-Up

    8:00am The Kwicky Koala Show

    8:30am Trollkins

9:00am The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Show

10:30am The Popeye and Olive Oyl Show

    11:00am Blackstar

    11:30am The Tarzan/Lone Ranger/Zorro Adventure Hour

12:30pm The Tom & Jerry Comedy Show

1:00pm The New Fat Albert Show

    1:30pm 30 Minutes

  • That lineup sucks! Kwicky was horrid! I'd watch the Trollkins only if there was nothing else on. And hopefully Tom and Jerry was the old shows and not the one with that stupid song in the beginning with them doing acrobatic crap.

  • @jermainemack glory days of cartoons

  • You can download Blackstar and other cartoons here:

    superhero-cartoon-network.blogspot

  • lol with thundarr!Blackstar rules!!!

  • This is a total fucking rip of thandarr the barbarian.

  • @Holymotownfilms Actually, no. Blackstar was originally supposed to be Afro-American but CBS got cold feet thinking Black people might find it offensive. So they made him Native American instead. o.O Nice. -.- j/k I ain't complaining though because he's a cool dude! He-Man looks more like Thundarr the Barbarian. That character was originally supposed to Conan or something but Schwartzenegger didn't think it was cool. So when the show took off, guess who got upset? CN pulled He-Man in Jan. '04.

  • LOL the trobbit people look like piglets

  • i love it

  • I remember going into some department store with my mom and in the toy isle...they sold big unweildy plastic Powersword and Starsword toys. OMG did I ever throw the biggest "I WANT IT MOMMY" fit in the history of child-dom. The embarrassment was too much for my poor mother and I came home the proud owner of the Powerstar. Within a week the paint was peeling (probably lead, too). It was hollow so within 2 weeks I had bent it in half.

I would pay $100,000 for that toy today, I kid you not.

  • He-Man: 'Hey Blackstar! Ever heard of copyright infringement?!'

    Blackstar: 'Say What?!'

He-Man: You heard me punk. See you in court!'

Blackstar: 'You asshole, I came out a year before you, you son of a bitch'.

    He-Man: Shit. Really?!

Blackstar: Yeah Motherfucker! My lawyers are gonna tear you a new asshole!

    Conan: Hey Blackstar!...

  • This came out before He-Man dumbfuck. Masters Of The Universe was still only a comic when this was realesed.

  • A: Did you read my comment in full?

B: Did you understand my comment?

C: You might want to save the 'dumbfucks' for the mirror.

  • My apologies.

  • No worries;)

  • Shit! Don't forget Thundarr who was before BLACKSTAR and HE-MAN But not before CONAN so yeah....See you as well Thundarr in court :/

  • Seems like all the half-naked muscle boys of cartoonland love to use swear words. :)

  • Um ... I don't remember Conan ever riding a shuttle through a black hole. The concept of a muscled hero fighting an evil nemesis is older then Greek mythology. It can't be copyrighted.

  • Didn't he? Are you sure?

I think you'll find that Conan did just that. He climbed on board a space-shuttle and hurtled his way through a Black Hole days, nay, weeks before Blackstar got his ass in gear. As for Hercules, well... that guy didn't turn up on the scene until 1997. Quite a good film, but not as good as The Little Mermaid.

You may detect a tone of sarcasm. o_O

  • @Aueneye actually Black

  • @Aueneye That's funny!!

  • @Aueneye this and he man were made by the same guy

  • @Aueneye And after Conan gets payback Buck Rodgers is next!

  • @Aueneye Conan´s Lawyer: John Carter called, something about Gullivar Jones...

  • @Aueneye Actually Blackstar came out two years before He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

  • @taurusman26 : Good to know.;)

  • @Aueneye going into this, I thought it was going to be a flash gordon rip off but it took an unexpected turn to eternia.

  • @Aueneye LOL FUNNY. Although He-man actually came out 2 years after Blackstar.

  • @Aueneye Thundarr: 'Conan, I'm sure you're not all that original yourself."

Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Obi Wan: "Look who's talking, asshole."

  • @Aueneye Filmation vs Filmation. That'll be fun.

  • OMG! Almost forgot this even existed. Thanks for the memories.

  • anybody rmembers Blackstar's dragon's name ?( I don't, please tell me : ( )

  • Warlock

  • Reeloran

  • its name was "Warlock"

  • i was lookin for mos def and talib kewli dammit!

  • Nostalgia!!!!

  • Planet Cigar

  • Sounds like someone was a fan of the Star Wars theme song...

  • Comment removed

  • What is this soft-core ad-crap doing on this clip?

  • He-man was actually gay. A lot of people don't know that, so don't feel bad. He didn't come out until the late 90's.

  • What proof do you have that he was "actually" gay?

  • During the production of Masters of the Universe, He-Man casually dated Dolph Lundgren. Talk about self-obsession.

  • "Dated"? Where's your proof of that?

  • I never missed an episode when i was young, cause i loved this cartoon...:-)

  • ok if you watched it alot. what episode is teh one where the overlord got ahold of both swords and jointed them together..i'd like to see that one again..I'm 41 and I use to love those cartoons..thanks

  • if i remember that one the swords wasn't together for long

  • JMS, the creator of Babylon 5, came up with the idea for Blackstar while working on the Fat Albert Show. He wanted to create a positive black role model, like Fat Albert, for inner city black kids, but as an action hero instead. CBS liked the show's concept, but thought a kid's action show carried by a black lead was too risky. They forced him to change the character's race. JMS said Blackstar and the The Real Ghostbusters were the two worst experiences he ever had working in kids cartoons.

  • Didnt know that. Were did you find this out?

  • His big fallout with ABC was over Janeane. Some ABC child psychologist thought Janeane was too assertive and negative. So the suits told him to make her more "maternal" and "supportive". They also said he needed to round out her glasses because they felt the sharp edges scared children. Then they canned the original voice actress, hiring one that sounded less harsh and frightening. He quit for that reason, along with "The Junior Ghostbusters", and the mandated focus on Slimer.

  • I hate to burst you bubble but Blackstar was a native american

  • His race was kept ambiguous in the show, even redesigning his look at the insistence of the execs. So he doesn't really have a race to speak of, in the show's canon. But yah, the creator originally wanted to make him black.

  • great, Blackstar and Thundarr were the best indeed!

  • Geez did that say 1981 in the intro? I didn't know, or maybe I forgot that it was that long ago.

  • HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!! This is what youtube is all about! Finding old shit. I almost forgot about this show. Man, Saturday mornings were the shit back in the days. This came on channel 2, I think before Jason Of Star Command (not sure, someone confirm or deny that for me). Now all kids get on Sat morn are Disney Channel retreads on ABC and Nick, Jr. retreds on CBS. And remember when The first Friday night of Sept they had the Saturday morning preview shows? Man, I miss my youth.

  • It came on be4 Jason of Star Command. THese were the best shows on Saturday morning. All the networks had some kind of cool cartoon on. Now all you have is news for like three hours just to get money n ratings. Now all kids have is Fox, thats all anime. Kids WB was the station to watch. Not now.

  • Be real cool if He-Man made an appearance on this show. Like say way of castle Greyskull. Both he and He-Man's mom were astronuats. The Sword of Power and the Star Sword. Skelator n the Overlord. Sorry flash back to the good old cartoons of Saturdays morning and weakday afternoons.

  • J Michael Strackzynski helped create Blackstar and also worked on He-man. He borrowed some elements he came up with while on Blackstar, like Marlena being an Earth astronaut and her ship falling through a wormhole.

  • Thnx dude didnt know that he worked on Fat Albert n helped created Blackstar. I thought they were goin to make him Native American. But that went to Bravestarr a few years later.

  • 1st Tan He-Man Cool Yes.)

  • Awesome.

  • More like John Whitebread, know what I'm saying? Ha. Actually I never saw this cartoon back in the day.

  • won't load for some reason.

  • Blackstar and Thundarr were the best!

  • I think so too Bellausus

  • This series is already available on DVD. You can get it at Amazon. It's a 2-DVD box set.

  • is thundarr also available on Amazon? I would love to have that cartoon on DVD. It actually was a good one for its time

  • I wouldn't know (but I suspect not)... I'll need to do a bit of searching around... Sorry!

  • it is the precursor of he man

  • this looks like it shares a lot stylistically with filmations flash gordon cartoon..is even the music the same?

  • Scope out the vids I got of Blackstar

  • Youngsters don't know shit about this!

  • i think there were only6 episodes.

  • There were 13 episodes.

  • I cant believe someone had this. this brings back some good old times

  • great
