That is so cool but I think I'd have cut the mouse up smaller. If you guys wouldn't have taken the animal in chances are it would have been abandoned though so good job! he seems happy.
Great job trying to help out !This owl is a fledgling and more than likely it did'nt fall out of it's nest, rather it was in it's " brancher" stage.Hops from branch to branch.
As far as imprinting.LOL!! So many people want to lecture, yet they don't even know the lesson. It's not like if you touch a baby bird WHAM , they're imprinted. I've raised owls from a few days after hatching, They learn to hunt by themselves, it's an instinct. You release them gradually, and then feed every now an then.
That owl looks sooo confused. It's trying to figure out why the monkeys keep feeding him and are not trying to kill him. Pretty sure he's just going along with it until it sees a chance to escape.
Cool video. Looks like he is eating well. People keep all sorts of birds as pets so im not sure why some act likes its a crime against humanity when someone ends up with something like an owl. Screech owls are not in any way endangered.
i'm sorry but this is not a good thing. unless you're a re-habber and have experience with the species, your best intentions will harm rather than help the animal....
@LoveYourDNA you know i understand what ur saying & this comment is 7 months old but it disturb me how people can try to make rules for other people when we all in fact have proper knowedge on how to care for any living thing that draws breath on this planet human beings been involed with animals every snice dinosuars walk the earth i think & know by now we know what were doing how eles do u think the book of science was made?
@KidSonicBoom7 OK, Kid .... you think that "humans have been involved with animals every since dinosaurs walk the earth"? Really? And if we're so marvelous w/taking care of animals, perhaps you can explain the current rate of extinctions?
@harbor2turtles kid? lol im 17 in Ap biology & from what ive seen & study, humans dont really know what the fukk there talking about we can only go so far of being right & can only come up with theorys & im sure in hell dont belive in Evolution as it to is run by faith. do you really think we can comprehend what is really going on? or predic & asume what happen or what exsisted and the offical timeline? its impossible besides the mind isnt what its crack up to be if u know what i mean.....
@harbor2turtles perhaps you are unaware of Human beings being 20 feet tall, if you belive in evolusion u might what to past on this theory wich could be thought by any man or women that walks the earth on how the tallest man in the world became 10 feet well its simple its science ,genetic deformation in growth sure that what they will tell yeah keep on reading ur bullshit books while the truth is hidden waste of a mind full of false thoerys when really human gainat remians were found...
However I am not saying that people should just go find owls to keep as pets. But in special circumstances, with an injured or abandoned owl, it's possible to raise it as a "pet" without making the owl unhappy or restricting it in any way. In rehabilitation centers the owls have their own "person" that they are dependent upon, and the owls have a relationship with them. The difference is that rehab centers are licensed and have more resources.
@GoLifehouse Birds in rehab centers imprint on humans as well. What most people do who own owls with the possession of a falconry and rehabilitation license, let the owls fly around freely, while coming in or around the house to eat if they need to. It gives the owls the opportunity to hunt and breed. It domesticates them but in no way is a life of imprisonment--It's the same with feral cats and house cats, they get along just fine and as I have seen, they're happy birds.
These people had good intentions. But don't make their mistake. If you find a young bird on it's own, there's a 95% chance that it's exploring outside of it's nest (which is a necessary part of development). If possible, leave the baby alone, mom and dad know where it is. If the baby is in danger, locate the nest and replace the bird. If you have an injured or truly abandoned baby take it to a rehabber! Sadly this bird has imprinted on people and is thus sentenced to a life in captivity.
Did you turn it over to someone? How wonderful to find and feed a beautiful owl like this and how sad to have to say goodbye. But it's good for the owl to learn how to be an owl and not a cute people-pet.
Most of the birds found by people on the ground are in the process of being fledged. The parents will continue to watch over them and bring them food for a few days until they are totally independent. It is not necessary to move them.
The video is very cool, but I must agree with everyone else that you need to turn it over to a wildlife rehabilitation center that can care for it properly.
Unfortunately, this owl is probably imprinted on humans now and won't know how to hunt in the wild. I'm sure you thought you were doing the right thing, but you should NEVER take in a wild animal, even if you think it needs your help. Call animal control or a rehabilitator if you find one that you really think is in danger.
The mouse is acceptable but far too large in one piece, and they are incapable of digesting the tail. Wildlife rehabilitation centers exist all over the nation purely for the purpose of raising and re-releasing animals like this back into their natural habitats, and that is really where this EASO owlet belongs.Hopefully you havent been continuing to keep the animal in your home since May as that could only have ultimately disastrous results.
While Im sure your intentions were good, they happen to be highly misguided. Owlets that size are still imprintable, meaning that due to excessive human exposure it is now likely that the animal wont even identify itself as an owl. It is also highly illegal to keep them, in the US at least, and you are at risk of being heavily fined. The diet is also unfortunately improper as it tends to be when people attempt to care for wildlife on their own.
I agree with harbor2turtles. You should've returned it to it's nest or where you found it. Let nature take it's course. Don't immediately assume it needs help and try to save it. Do the right thing and let it go. Don't imprison it. Dont' keep it as a pet. You just took away one more bird from the species that could other wise continue to reproduce it's self. Your helping in the demise of this species.
This owl did not fall from its nest. It "fledged" which means it was ready to leave the nest. If you had left it alone it would have climbed up a tree where its parents would have found it, fed it, and taught it to hunt. You are NOT feeding it a normal diet. Oh, and by the way, for people who "want one" ... this is illegal and cruel to the owl.
Can it actually digest cockroaches and crickets whole? Or is it just a form of roughage so it cleans out its stomach better when its pukes up a pellet?
This makes me want a baby owl even more! Adults are fine and all but I want an owlet.
