  • it wasnt a bad movie by any means, but it really took away some of the most important moments, i still prefer the graphic novel eitheir way

  • alan moore is lucky that he didn't waste his time watching this piece of shit.

  • I haven't read the GN yet, although planning on it. This movie is pretty much one of a kind, and the only reason it did not hit big in the box office is because they didn't butcher it like they do in most adaptations. The movie was subtly brilliant; I was left with the feeling of relief and of sorrow that such a wonderfully genius movie was made, yet would be misinterpreted/undervalued by the masses of ignoramuses. One of my all-time favorite movie, truly art.

  • All the song lyrics included in the graphic novel were incorporated into the film via the soundtrack. The actors even damn well looked just like the characters in the comic. SO, they changed the ending. That's completely understandable in my book. The general public, those unfamiliar with the graphic novel, would be turned off my the giant squid. They would think it was random and nonsensical. The bomb just made more sense for the film. But otherwise? The film was spot on. Haters gonna hate.

  • Ok, I TOTALLY disagree with people hating on this movie. I don't see how you could really hate it without hating it for the sake of hating something. I think some people just expected it to fail them, and so they dug for things to dislike. This movie was fantastic. The graphic novel had been one of my favorites for a long time, and the film did not let me down. They took scenes and lines DIRECTLY from the graphic novel. CONT...

  • What is the name of the song used in this video? i've been trying to find out. Any ideas?

Btw i think watchmen was a great adaptation, they transitioned what they could and the parts they did take over were executed well enough.

  • I feel like by changing that ending, and not leaving the viewer grappling with morality which is far beyond their heads they really tore the heart and soul out of the GN. I believe this moral complexity is what the entire GN was about, and if you take that away with a "You're a monster, Adrian" the movie watching experience losses something important. I was astounded they chose to do it, considering they replicated some lines word for word and I had enjoyed the movie decently up to that point.

  • @Lifegoesongundam: I see what you're saying, and I understand feeling that way. But here is why I didn't have a problem with it:

    1) This is movie, not a book. I think you have to view the film compared to other superhero MOVIES, not superhero comic books. In superhero movies, the villains almost always die. When Dan is slowly running at Adrian, I think we're supposed to think "right, here's the part where the villain dies.....WHAT?? They're going to let him live??"

    CONT...

  • CONT...

I also think Matthew Goode's performance has a Christ-like quality to it. He sees his actions as self-sacrifice. Someone had to do it. He clearly admits he has done something indescribably terrible, but believes it was the right decision under the circumstances.

    2) In the next scene, Dan has accepted Adrian's "new world." He seems okay with it.

For these reasons, I believe the ambiguity was preserved, but in a different way.

  • For me, the most interesting moral question the book left me with was what Dan, Laurie, Rorschach, and Doc should do. Should they expose Adrian? It feels wrong to just remain silent and let the world remain in the dark....but at the same time, exposing Adrian will destroy the peace that has been created. I think this bit from the film sums it up perfectly:

Dan: "Peace based on a lie."

    Adrian: "But peace nonetheless."

  • Here is my reason for not liking the movie. The ending. No, I'm not talking about the squid. I'm talking about Dan's heroic condescension at the end. The moral of the movie seems to be set in traditional morality. But at the end of a graphic novel, you get a sense of complexity that Dan and Adrian can't fathom. Dan has sex by a pool, and Adrian asks John if he "did the right thing in the end" to which John responds "Nothing ever ends." This separated watchmen imo, from classic superhero GN's

  • Of course the graphic novel is better. Of course it was dumbed down by being a 2:40 movie and not a mini-series. But it's still a great adaptation and a great movie on it's own. My favorite superhero movie

  • God! Why does everybody complain?!

I don't have to pick between the movie and the graphic novel... I can always have both!!!

  • @justafidemyself This movie completely butchered the graphic novel. Not only did they change a great deal of the original content but I thought a lot of the emotions were misunderstood. People shouldn't watch the movie, they should read the graphic novel. Even if reading isn't your "thing" visually its more exciting than the movie and you learn a great deal more about the characters.

  • Cool kinda trailer! but this was just a "movie scene" Frame Scene comparison, anyways Theres No comparison, Of course the graphic novel is better for lots of Reasons but I give you 3 Main: 1) Since the Beginning "no Novel, no movie", as simple as that 2)(Not saying the movie sucked) The Novel was obviously more complete, because well its the Novel 3)For the same reason it is more complete, theres more character development without rushing anything.

There, not getting into criticizes the movie!

  • At 0:59. Hey look, it's a blue Pingas!

  • I think 'Del Toros Hellboy movies are the best comic book too film adaptations to date, they caught the look & feel of the first 2 Mike Mignola books in particular, perfectly, but also expanded on them with 'Del Toros brilliantly twisted imagination!

  • Watchmen can only be appreciated for the masterpiece that it is in comic book form. The multiple storytelling devices such as police files, biography excerpts, newspaper clippings & the black frieghter(a comic within' the comic that ties into the main plot seemlessly)could never be done justice in a film no matter who the director was! From hell & Vfor vendetta were better films than watchmen, eventhough they were a far cry fom the graphic novels,at least they worked as films.WATCHMEN=UNFILMABLE!!!

  • Man this movie was by far the best superhero movie that i have watch. Nice and twisted ending, very thick and complex storyline very good character development and come on all i got to say is one word, Rorschach.......

  • it takes an idiot to understand the story, it takes an intellect to understand the message

  • I love it when a graphic novel is faithfully adapted to film, of course there were some inconsistencys with the movie, the gian inter-dimensional squid was scrapped, as well as dozens of supporting characters, but a 2 and a half hour long movie can`t do justice to Watchmen, it would have to be like, 5 hours long.

  • i don't get the story at all, man. it seems pointless to me, and i'm pretty sure i'm not alone with this opinion. who agrees with me?

  • The graphic novel is a warning about power...the film is a cheerleader/apologist for power. That's why this Watchmen fan didn't like the movie. Not because I didn't understand it. Because the film makers didn't understand their source material. Or thought it would be better if it was "all badass and shit".

It's not a terrible movie if you don't know or like the graphic novel, but I think Alan Moore and his fans and the brilliant Watchmen all deserved better.

  • smashing pumpkins ftw.

  • at the end of the day they still had to please the hollywood studio execs. so thats probably why it will never be as badass as the novel.

  • I never heard of the comic until this movie. I thought this movie was great and it made me want to read the comic.

i think they did a decent job of imitating the novel. i mean, it could always be better but what do u want? an 8 hour watchmen movie?? cmon.

personally id love to see a movie thats just about dr manhattan and rorschach lives but thats not gonna happen so fuck it! but anyways...

WATCHMEN IS A GREAT MOVIE FOR ANY MOVIE FANS COLLECTION!

  • Frankly, there would have been no way to do full justice to Watchmen unless you divided it into 2 films, a la Kill Bill. Alan Moore confessed that he designed Watchmen to be unfilmable, which is correct; specifically in lieu of his brilliant juxtaposition of text, image and geometric resonance. As it stands, I think the film's a servicable companion piece to the G.N., and gets the spirit if not the letter right. (That fucking ending, though..rrgh)

  • i thought the ending of the movie was better than the books....i didn't like the alien invasion thing too much..

  • Thank you for posting this. With all of the flak Snyder takes for being "unfaithful" to the graphic novel, he truly recreated it. And everything he changed was a vast improvement over the novel. The squid was a stupid comic book ending that completely seemed out of feel of the "real life superheroes" effect. Besides. You people fail to realize that Watchmen had been forgotten everywhere but the comic community. It's totally lost on my generation

  • They changed Ozymandias's motive a little bit which made me pissed off.

  • Watchmen was a fantastic comic, and the film was amazing, and impossibly faithful to the graphic novel. Just the opening credits intro is a great film in itself. If one doesn't know about Nuclear power, the Cold War, Vietnam, Nixon, Kennedy, the 1970s, the Soviets in Afghanistan, Einstein, Quantuum Physics, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, what All Along The Watchtower is about, Batman, etc.. ( with a general grasp of history) - and most people don't - this movie means nothing. Thanks for the post

  • if only the squid was there...

  • the thing wrong with the film was that it was a film. really that is all there is to it.

  • Snyder's overextending the fight scenes using the badly dated Matrix-style slow mo and heavy emphasis on just how cool it looks to beat people up shows just how off the mark he is. Watchmen the movie really is a brainless action flick with lots of gore, not bad for what it is but I think the source material certainly flew right over the filmmakers heads.

  • Alan Moore is like Harlan Ellison, in the sense that they both despise the filmed version of their work. My opinion, the Watchman movie was damned good, just as City on the Edge of Forever is about as close to a perfect episode of Star Trek as you'll ever see. Of course, changes were made to the original stories--compromises will always be made to satisfy a mainstream audience. It could have been much worse, like The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen movie... Horrible!

  • If i could change something it would be putting some pants on Dr.Manhattan

  • Book is far better

  • Are you kiddin'?! There is no comparison. The movie sucked ass.

  • the problem i have about the movie is that when i read the book there was a deep emotional depth with an amazing story to back it up, but when i saw the movie it was basicully the graphic novel on a screen, that had no emotional depth, and even left tsome aspects from the comic out. That is why many people back then said if there was a comic to movie adaption for this it would'nt be done well

  • The squid sucked. Trying to trick all of Earth into thinking they're about to be invaded by aliens? Making them think the mercurial Doctor Manhattan was about to kill everyone was a much better ending, especially since everyone already thought he was the "nuclear deterrent".

  • there just wasn't enough time to really get the depth of where the book went.

comparing the two can be fun, but ultimately they're 2 completely different mediums and should be understood as such.

  • nice, i havent read the comic book but i heard it was better than the movie, however the movie was insanely epic. whats the song u used in this video? its sick!!!!

  • STFU ALL WATCMEN HATERS THIS MOVIE RULES.

Long live Dr.Manhattan and Rosharch too

  • I love the graphic novel but i absolutely hated this movie and anyone who hasnt read the novel has full right to say watchmen sucks

  • pfff. they aren't that big of a difference. The only big difference is no squid monster.

  • @halfawake454

Yes and no Cpt metropolis, fucked up flashbacks, unrealistic fight scenes, fucked up lines and i just hated Night owl and spectre's actors they where horrible.the only characters that really looked and acted like the novel was rorsharch

  • It was necessary for snyder to exclude many of the graphic novels' ideas e.g. the squid. If he hadn't, the mainstream audience wouldn't have accepted it. Changes had to be made so that the movie would be successful.

  • I never was really into the comic's I just heard about them rather see the movie. My son is really enjoying the movie more than I am right now! lol

  • All the politicians and the whores will look up and say 'Save us'. ..and i will whisper..'no'

  • @semignome What kinda Whores we talkin here?

  • the comic is far better than the movie, even the audio digital comic was better imo

  • So true. Zack Snyder is not a very mature director, so all he could do was just copy the LOOK of Watchmen, but didn't nail the maturity of the story.

  • Exactly. Snyder claimed he's stayed faithful to the source. And then he butchered so many aspects of the comic.

Reproducing panels doesn't equal transforming the spirit of the story into a different medium.

  • This is true, but I don't think Snyder could have done significantly better. The thing that made the book brilliant is that it did things only a graphic novel could do.

  • There many of us, Moore included, very much agree.

I'm still determined to like the movie. No such luck yet, but perhaps in some time, when (if) the DC gets available in Germany...

  • @Skukkuk well...ehh, honestly take it up with David Hayter he wrote the script...snyder did an awesome job and honestly Hayter stayed as faithful to the source material as possible.

  • @Skukkuk The problem is he tried to get a little taste of all the elements that made the novel great, but in the end that meant none of it was satisfying. Also there's no excuse for the way they neutered Rorschach's philosophy. That's simple cowardice on the part of the filmmakers.

  • @WhenYouveGoneGuru

Oh gosh, Rorschach. Movie-Rory is really cool and sweet an all; but it's not Rorschach.

Somehow it's sad how little Snyder actually understood the comic. I'd rather he'd done his version of the story and make a decent flick (for those who can stand his style), instead of trying to adapt Moore's vision and failing so miserably.

  • @Skukkuk They had him almost perfect until they just lost their balls and changed his philosophy to something both less disturbing and less thought provoking. Other then that its probably the truest movie representation of a comic book character I can think of.

Also what was with the childhood fight scene. In the book it looks like he bites the kid the way a small violent animal would, in the movie he like slowly takes a tentative bite like he's trying a new snack.

  • 1:00 small dick lol

  • they just didnt want it to be a distraction

  • haha

  • in the movie did rorschac say "all the politicians and whores will look up..."

  • yes

  • Snyder did an excellent job

  • Great film, they did it well, i just don't see why they fucked with the ending. Didn't seem necessary

  • how was the ending fucked. I really dont understand y people say this?

  • if you haven't read the book, then that was a silly comment.

If you have read the book, the come on! i mean a doctor manhattan type explosion instead of a giant alien from another dimension? of course it's fucked.

  • ROFL ROFL. R U REALLY suggesting that A FUCKIN GIANT SQUID FROM ANOTHER DIMENSION IS LESS REASONABLE THAN A BOMB???

U DO know that bombs ACTUALLY EXIST RIGHT???

Giant Squid or Bomb. Which idea is more realistic???

  • before i continue this conversation, i have to know whether you've read the book or not.

  • ROFL. Yes. Yes i Have. lol

  • okay well then you should know that the giant octopus was adding to the giant shock it was meant to give, basically to scare all other contries out of blowing eachother up with nukes.

The fact that they used a simple explosion related to dr manhattan-ish technology, ruined the whole "adrian creating a monster and teleporting it scariness horror" thing.

The explosion in the film ruins the tone that it has in the book, imo.

  • Excuse me sir. All Syder did was make DR. MANNHATTEN THE "SQUID". Instead of the world uniting against the original squid, they united against Mannhattan. Big difference. The Message is EXACTLY THE SAME.

And u said it ruined the horror. R u forgetting that the U.S. has experienced terror attacks? This is more realistic and even more terrifying than a silly squid.

A giant squid may have been great for a comic but for a movie that everyone will see would be just silly and detract from message

  • but i think the horror is meant to come from the unrealistic-ness (if that's a word)

And i know all this is disagreeing, but i personally think that a giant octopus that noone has seen before is scarier than a blue explosion.

I suppose it still kept the plot intact though.

  • ok, i suppose i cant take that type of answer. Its ok if u believe the squid is scarier. I'll respect that.

    lol

  • That's a silly objection. It made much more sense to scapegoat Manhatten, considering they were going to all the trouble to alienate him and make him appear dangerous. The parallel dimension crap was more of a surreal threat, whereas Manhatten proved a tangible figure people could band against.

  • i think they changed the ending because to introduce an "alien monster" into an already long film would have not only made it longer but more complicated. Using Dr. M instead was simpler and didn't require new info. In my mind it's an understandable compromise.

  • agreed. it also makes it more realistic in my opinion.

  • One of my criticisms was losing the impending sense of Nuclear War thru the film. I felt this impending doom only in spots of the film. in the end it pulls away from the larger meaning of the story...imho :-)

  • I don't see what more they could of done.

-The opening scene with the McLaughlin group talking about the threat.

-Constant reference to the doomsday clock getating closer to midnight

    -Dan's apocalyptic dream.

-Nixon moving to Defcon 2, and then Defcon 1.

    ...among other moments.

What do you think is missing? What more could they have done, specifically?

  • A more impending and claustrophobic score. that alone would have been a constant reminder.

Your right though.... those things you mentioned all added up to that feeling. But since this is a main element of the story i thought it should be more prominent.

  • Although my other disagreement with the film is the Comedian. I thought the direction for him was a little off. Blake was always, psychologically, a deeper and darker personality. Not to mention that scene of him in Moloch's bedroom crying was horribly acted. I suspect they had to squirt water on his cheeks to make him seem like he was crying.

  • @GlumPhoenix The various people sort of freaking out in civilian live. Like the news stand guy.

  • @bilbob7624 It was a problem to begin with because the idea of nuclear war is so remote to people these days (despite the chance that there are still enough nukes around to wipe out the planet five times over and a nuclear exchange could potentially happen by accidient.

I noticed they tried to slip in environmentalist/global warming alarmist messages. At least they didn't make it about the war on terror.

  • I enjoyed this movie far better than Transformers 2 and the Dark Knight. I've got to admit, I had to really pay attention to keep up with the story, but I didn't find it incredibly hard to follow and confusing. Also, the aspect that I loved so much about the movie was everyone's view on the world. I thought Dr. Manhattan being an atheist was awesome, as I'm one myself. My two favorite characters are Ozymandias and Dr. Manhattan, I agree most with their philosphical views.

  • 0:59 thats his dick i think

  • the movie wa a lil to long

  • i thought movie was good i want to read book cause i hear it has a lot of better stuff in it so yeah

  • I haven't read the Book but I thought the Movie was worth the watch. I thinked it failed because not to many people have heard of characters like Dr. Manhatten and NiteOwl. The Dark Knight did amazing at the Box Office because of Heath Ledger dying and the fact that just about everybody knows who Batman and the Joker are.

  • I highly thank you for that. And for those who didn't read the book shame on you. I have to admit for someone who had no knowledge of the book and then to be eager to see it is understanding. When i left the theater i was pleased to an extent. What got to me i even saw several people reading the book while online for the second show. i hope they were rereading to refresh there memory.

  • 1:04 this being is what personifies what I have been talking about in having nudity on the silver screen and on TV ETC. This being is the most unbelievably beautiful, powerful, thoughtful, and humble super hero I have ever seen. Even willing to say he was wrong.

  • The reason why so many people didn't like watchmen is because nobody understands it ... Why not?? i am a 13 year old kid who had read the comic book and saw the movie and even I understood it ... But yeah i got 2 admit that if you havent read the book and first watched the movie then ofcourse its gonna be complicated cause you don't understand the concept of the story... Why does everyone have a bad comment on this movie? This is the best movie i saw , plus comic book is the best ever made

  • i saw the film and only read the 1st 3 chapters of the comic

    i understood

  • agreed. I'm only 14 and I've read through the comic book and I have to say I LOVE the film adaptaton. I am very glad they removed Tales of The Black Freighter, as while it's a cool story as a metaphor for Veidt it dragged on for me. It think that the director's cut will be the best version in my opinion.

  • im not disagreeing with what you said but dude its not a comic book its a graphic novel dammit!

  • @justafidemyself The Graphic Novel was a true work of art. The movie had no reason to be made, and should not be enjoyed by fans of the graphic novel. The story was changed for cinematic purposes and therefore destroyed the true spirit of the story. Art should only inspire us, it should not be replicated by another "artist" who is after financial gain. For those who have only watched the film, you have truly never experienced Watchmen.

  • @justafidemyself I saw the movie only having got half way through the book beforehand. The movie was 'dumbed' down compared to the book, so if people didn't get the movie they'd only get more confused by the book (though personally I enjoyed the book ten times more than the movie) especially given the underlying plot differences. I think it comes more down to your way of thinking, perspective and general understanding of life and the human condition. Most people are too self absorbed.

  • @justafidemyself The movie is not that bad but they cut so much out of it and changed alot of it. the fight at the start was a 1 sided fight comedian did not even fight back.they cut all of the roshack back story out. they changed the ending they changed how the child killer was killed they changed fights they left out the ship wreak side story they left out the other super heros. its just 1 thing after another so the movie is good if you did not read the book but trash if you did..

  • @justafidemyself Its a novel and of course nobody understood it was Incomplete an attempt of summering the novel, dude I was 13 when i saw it, I love it, it made me want to read the novel and I started finding that there where lots of stuff that was missing from the novel, plus the lack of time for the movie made the meaning of the whole thing change its direction! And There not really a thing in the novel that you can say "oh this is meaning less lest cut it out" because it all works together!.

  • I don't think Moore's anti-Americanism is a figment of my provincialism, especially in light of his interviews and other works. This after all was a man associated with the Christic Institute at one point.

The most telling for me was how he characterized conversations between the minor characters. Maybe you have to be a native to notice - or maybe, as a Reagan Republican, I'm more apt to see the insults directed at me.

You must admit, he doesn't seem overly fond of the Gipper.

  • veidt hair looks nothing like in the movie

  • wtf is the name of this song ppl i really wanna know!

  • The Beginning is the End is the Beginning.

  • The Watchmen movie doesn't really "make me think" - the philosophical ideas as expressed in the original comic were badly expressed and poorly thought out to begin with, and a faithful film couldn't easily blunt that. But Watchmen did entertain, which is worthy enough a goal.

As for Watchmen the comic, the only thought it inspired in me was how much of a jerk Alan Moore had to be in order to write it. It's an unending insult against Americans, especially my sort.

  • i don't think its a specific insult to Americans because certainly for me I saw its pessimistic view translate quite easily anywhere. I can understand why you say that it ridicules many things that are American like your patriotism, but I think its each man for himself whether he makes the links.

I guess being English I've got used to automatically porting ideas over as a large majority of films are based in the USA

  • The blue man has got no cock. Business is business. Kill, rape an loot, but never show your genitals in public. Reminds me that on poster of 101 dalmatiner. the dog have'nt got an asshole. Ths is the link to the calvinistic value system reresented by the USA and transported everywhere.

  • you know the part where the silk spectre turns around and theres an exxplosion, and her hair is like all whooshed up and stuff? what part of the book is that from?

  • I was looking foward to Wolverine more than this movie.

    I watched both.

I liked Watchmen far more than Wolverine.

    Don't judge a book by it's cover.

  • wow, i didn't know that the actual comic cells and the movie were so much in common

  • yep

  • i loved the movie, but it can never compare to the graphic novel

  • ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF 2009

  • THE best movie of 2009

  • Yeah ever since this came out, there's NOTHING to look forward to for 2009 movie wise.

  • No, 2009 has some incredible films coming out, and that is why i think Watchmen is so impressive. If this film, which has a cult following and has no big named stars can hold its own against Star Trek, Angels and Demons, Wolverine etc then it is a win.

  • No really, there's nothing other than that movie being made by the two dudes who were gunna make the Halo movie and Bruno. Yeah the movie did great, hell it was great. Just nothing left for this year now. And don't tell me Transformers 2. That looks like a shitpile of no-talent CGI and horrid acting.

  • yes i totaly agree i waited a year for this movie now its all over and nothing but crap to rock our world! ...oh well theres always transformers ect lol.

  • Yeah, if you like overrated CGI shitfests with very weak plots and misused characters.

  • TheYungNiggaz1234, uh Bullshit! More like the worst movie of 2009. STFU!

  • To Evil Angel Eyes, have you read the book of Watchmen? If you havn't read that book, you wil hate that movie. And apparently you did hate it.

  • I didn't read the book. I liked the movie.

  • every time someone downtalks this movie I feel like killing a cheerleader...

  • Roflmao... This made my ngiht!!

  • Yet it came out with an unknown cast, a director with 2 films under his belt and made profit. Infact it did better than the industry imagined.

  • It made over $100 million. This is failure?

  • yeah it shouldve made $1070973753-9467-32476-9374-967-9437-92-967-943 dollars

okay at least a billion this movie kicks dark knights ass up and down the street only reason dat movie got buzz was because of the amazing performance of heath other then that it sucked compared to watchmen

ps. people don't like movies that make them think

  • i wouldn't go that far but ur right watchmen was better but im happy it got criticzied it wasnt the perfect moviebut niether was dark night i think dark night is over rated and wasn't fairly juged

  • SMART people like movies that make them think, otherwise it's just a lot of recycled material. The comic was great and reading it over and over again, you'll pick up on extra themes and concepts you probably didn't see the first time. The movie however, left out all of that, and the the fact that it was directed by Zack Snyder made it even worse,Who the fuck decided he should direct it? The "300" effect was far overused and it didn't stay true to the comic.A large disappointment in my opinion.

  • That main reason the Watchmen movie failed is that people didn't get it. This is the kind of movie where if you don't keep your thinking cap on the entire time, you're going to be clueless.

Is it as deep and complex as the graphic novel? Of course not. Not even close. No film, even a 3 hour film, ever could be. But it is it a very deep and thought-provoking film? Absolutely.

I think the reason it doesn't feel deep to you is that it pales in comparison to the book. Which is inevitable.

  • yeah i think i understood the movie more when i watched it twice i think its a awesome movie never read the novel though i want to

  • I never read the comic but I just saw the directors cut. Small subtle changes really helped me understand the movie. Maybe it was because that was the 2nd time I watched it but a few lines by lory / big blue penis really helped bring the movie together for me. It made more sense. Some things in the movie took so long to develop and then all of a sudden . . . JUMPED into the answer. Like lori's father being comedian and big blue penis' return to earth / respect for humanity. I felt that wasrushed

  • Damn straight!

  • EvilAngelEyes, I see that you are a fan of Pink, Angel, and fictional Harry Potter & Hermione romance videos set to Mika music.

Suddenly your comment makes so much more sense.

  • The graphic novel was awesome and the movie was awesome as well....

  • "Hey butt-head this book is awesome! there a talking snake and theres a guy who puts a leaf on his schlong!" Why couldn't Doc do that?! xD

  • I don't like ozy's costume in movie version. It's more appropriate the costume of the graphic novel where he's like an ancient Egyptian pharaoh.

  • gold and purple wasnt there only at his office

  • Yeah...especially with the whole Rameses II connection.

  • wheres the squid?

  • i'm surprised at all the hubub about the sex, violence and blue boinkers. it's a GRAPHIC NOVEL so the topics can appeal to the more adult audiences. graphic novels don't have to have all of that but you're reading/watching one then don't be surprised.

  • FINALLY, someone who said that before I did! Geez, if people don' tlike it, then don't go to watch the damn thing, and do NOT read the book right before watching the movie, you'll spoil yourself, even Snyder said to read the book AFTER you go see the movie ^_^'

  • And you probably sleep with a nightlight and secretly go to gay bars to hide your shame. Dude, shut up. If you don't got anything nice to say, don't say it at all. People read comic books and graphic novels because it interprets a world where SOMEONE stands up to injustice and fights the good fight. Something that this world desperately needs. Watchmen shows the true ugly side of us all. If you don't want to accept people who enjoy heroes, what does that make you?

  • How would going to gay bars hide my shame, that makes no sence. Must be reading all those comic books have rendereed you unable to construct a coherent sentence. You should try reading grown up books.

  • Considering I read Machiavelli and Plato in my spare time, I don't think trying to insult the way I write is a smart idea. And actually my whole tirade about you going to gay bars in secret does make sense: Those who are secretly gay, put on a facade claiming they really aren't and will go to extreme lengths in order to hide it. Perhaps you should start looking at the more philosophical points of the "superhero" and you might find that these so-called "children's books" have far more merit.

  • If a child so much as attempted to read Watchmen, or The Dark Knight Returns, or The Killing Joke, or V for Vendetta, they would either give up after the first page, not understand them, or become mentally deranged. The notion that comic book are for children hasn't been true since the early 80s - learn a little more about what you're preaching and you would realise that graphic novels and comic are just as widely regarded in modern academic culture as any 'grown-up' book.

  • im a child and im not like a book-worm and i didn't give up 1st page, and i understood it, and im fairly sure im still sane as ever... but i guess its gud for adults too

  • Back in the day, royalpanthera7, past the days I can remember (I'm 18) comics were squarely aimed towards children before they hit 10. Nowadays, comics and graphic novels are art forms in themselves, and I was arguing that they are regarded as well as any other written masterpiece. They contain adult situations and adult themes, and even if you may have understood the storyline, there are layers and layers of subplots within Watchmen that can only be understood through repeated reading.

  • Grow up, learn that graphic novels have been an important part of modern cultre since the 80s, and do some research. Watchmen came in the Times top 100 best novels since in the 20th century. Also, it can't do you any harm to use punctuation and correct grammer.

  • its a graphic novel...lol

  • technically, it's both - a graphic novel can be interpretated as a collection of a series of comics. Some people would define the difference as being that graphic novels have more adult themes, but 'The Killing Joke is pretty heavy going, and that is only 80 so pages long, so it can't really be called a novel. Many people would disagree with me. I think Watchmen can be safely called either 'comics', as it was realised in seperate 12 issue chapter, or a 'graphic novel', because they are combined.

  • That is so fucking close minded

  • graphic novels are literature. like bexby said it was in the top 100 novels. graphic novels are just regular novels just put in a different form.

  • U tell him, m8!

    that's like saying TV's 4 kids

    IT DEPENDS WHAT U WATCH/READ

  • It's not a real insult if the person doesn't get it. You have to speak in terms of understanding to the level they would know. I'm not saying you're smarter or that they're more stupid. It's just a statement that you should understand. Especially if you "read" Plato and whatnot in your spare time.

The equivalent of people who actually read Plato and/or Machiavelli is very slim as to those who "admit" they do. Considering those who admit it really don't. At least, in the way you've presented it.

  • I saw the movie

I think basically first 60% of the movie is very good - pretty much stuck to the story and managed to catch many things from the graphic novel.

UNFORTUNATELY . . .the rest of the 40% of the movie did let me down simply because they changed too much of the story.

The thing that makes me really wonder is WHY DID THEY CHANGE THE STORY toward the end? Based on what I saw in first half of movie, Zack Snyder could have pulled it off - THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THE CHANGES.

  • Often, when a book is made into a movie, they will make changes just to keep people interested. If you already know what is going to happen, it isn't as exciting.

  • Dude, I think they did these changes to water down the movie. For example:

Comedian shooting the Vietnamese woman is bad. . . but would`ve had more impact if the audience knew that the woman is pregnant with HIS baby.

Rorschach cutting up a murderer with a cleaver is brutal, but handcuffing him to a pipe, setting his surroundings on fire and giving him an option of cutting thru his arm with a hacksaw to save himself or die in fire is better (which by the way was done in the 1st Mad Max).

  • Erm... Maybe I watched a different Watchmen movie. Because in the one I watched they did say she was pregnant with his baby.

  • Actually, like the graphic novel, it is implied that the baby is actually his. But yeah, the Rorschach scene was watered down. On the plus side, it's 97% accurate to the comic book, which is the first in a long time.

  • dude, only the ending and one or two footnotes were changed. And I think it would've made more impact if Ozymandias targeted the Doc, since let's face it: people would laugh at the whole concept of making people believe in aliens, since the 21st century mind would say: "we're not that stupid." now it can be argued we are, but to be already tossed through the ringer, the whole "happy ending" would've died if they insulted the audience's intelligence.

  • Well... the graphic novel does address your point - in order for people to unite, the reason (or the lie) would have to be something really big and audacious.

Joseph Goebbels (Hitler's propaganda minister) once said that if you want to make people buy into a lie then you have to tell a big one.

Also. . . they could have re-designed the monster and make it look more acceptable to the current movie-going generation.

  • perhaps, but making the twist of turning your back on your fellow heroes as well as seeing normal humans beneath you made a much better sentiment than the whims of an alien. I think with the fallout of the Fantastic Four flicks, audiences have seen enough of aliens. Targeting the Doc was a more human approach, which gave the film gravity. And I do know of Goebbels work. Fantastic writer and influence. It is also argued that many Soviets and Americans stole their ideas from his original concepts.

  • I haven't read all the comments thoroughly because well I don't have time but a few things, thanks for the vid I was really looking to see how the two related image wise. Very well done. The movie was extremely well done IMO, visually is was great. I thought the story was awesome and so was the casting. Rorshach does say the whole liberal/whore line in the movie. And all you ppl complaining about Dr. Manhattan being naked get over it! I don't see you bitching about seeing tits. Great Movie!

  • in the movie

    why

they show the fucking dick of Dr Manhattan

  • Jesus fucking christ. Why would you call the movie gay just because a guy is naked?

OMG PENIS MOST GAY MOVIE EVAR.

    Childish imo

  • A movie only show so much visually and they're goal is to make money so some parts had to be changed for those that haven't read the book and to make sure the movie wasn't to lengthy.
