The advice they give is actually useful believe it or not.
An atomic bob can wipe out an entire city in less than 10 seconds. You will not have time to find shelter in the event of a sudden attack. Doing this at least gives you a chance, running like ants only makes it easier to die. You can't outrun a nuke
@tg72211 Not really, Gamma rays travel in straight lines. Standing up would expose you to more gamma rays. Ducking and Covering exposes you to a lot less lowering the chance of radiation sickness.
Just wondering sense this is exactly what not to do is there anything that could help increase ones chances of surviving a nuke? I know covering yourself may help but is there anything more you can do?
If you duck and cover you will fly 100 feet. If you go into your inner hall, well, it would have to have a 10 foot thick wall, andthen an inch thick of lead. This video will help if you wer 20 miles away from the boom
The whole point of this vid was to prevent panic and create an atmosphere of (fake) safety. they didnt want america to go crazy about the atomic bomb soo simply they lied to them ....
"We must obey the Civil-Defense Worker... Exterminate! Exterminate!.." 7:20
...Lol! I love the guy with the Newspaper on his head: at least, he'll burn faster...
The only useful thing you can do is move away from any heavy-populated area and build a shelter that can sustain 200 people for 20-30 years (plus the material for reconstruction afterwards)... Because, if a Nuke blows up, the rest of them will too and it's Armageddon, people!
If a 57 megaton bomb(5700 kilotons or equal to Tsar Bomba) hit YOUR town, at ground zero there would be a creator over 2 MILES ACROSS and 1000 FEET DEEP!
Every house within 20 miles will be COMPLETELY destroyed! And if a house is destroyed, guess what happens to your fragile ass!
For 33 FUCK MILES most all glass windows will be blown out!!!
There's a structural damage sim you can do for your own town at meyerweb(.)com/eric/tools/gmap/hydesim.html
1.Flash-duck and cover-if you are in a building this will most likely stop the flash from blinding you, but the light and heat released in the split second, will melt a vehicle in a matter of seconds and trap everyone inside mmost likely killing them, and blow in any buliding in a 5-10 mile wide radius (depends on the bomb).
2.Heat and Radiation release-Suppose you survive the flash, by some miracle, you will be in a nuclear waste land
ok, first of all, the flash, even if you are in a building, will most likely give you a 3rd degree burn itself, then the shockwave hits you, shattering almost every bone in your body, if you are near the bomb, you will literally go from solid to vapor in a matter of 2 seconds. if you are lucky enough to be in a shelter, or in some kind of safe place, the radiation will contaminate the water and soil, killing all plants, livestock will die from lack of food and water, and eventually people die.
@lordofthebasses123 Quite frankly, there isn't much ways to survive a nuclear bomb. Ducking and cover will protect you from some things such as debris. Although, you probably will still die, it increases your chance of survival by a small amount (which is better then nothing if you ask me :P)
if you want to die ritheing in agonizeing pain throwing up lumanus puke .while waching all your skin fall of over a matter of weeks then you know what to do .DUCK AND COVER .
Beta waves can go through thick aluminium and will disable electronics, alpha particles will kill you when you ingest them possibly in water after ( most likely ) but are harmless otherwise and gamma rays will flash burn/vapourise you under any less than 6 feet of concrete or several inches of lead an added bonus is that they move at the speed of light (good luck running).

hahahaha 50's typical movie. at 8:36 and 1:37 those are token blacks! hahah. and frankly this is helpful a bit. i mean, if you did survive an atomic bomb blast in the "duck and cover" position, the injuries wont be as bad. but i mean, what are the chances?
and whats the SSHHHHH! sound when they say duck(SHHHHH) and cover?
i think thats either a gasp as in "oh my god we're all gonna die if we dont duck and cover now" sort of gasp or the swish sort of sound of bert ducking and covering very quickly.
lol! We watched it in history and we were all laughing so much!!!! Duck and cover isn't gonna save you from vapourising!!! and i thing an atomic bomb is slightly more dangerous than a car.
Honestly, I dont think its a matter of debris. An Atomic Bomb would incinerate you under, or above a desk. And if you hide beside a building opposite of the explosion, the building will most likely collapse on YOU. And if you are on the same side as the nuke, you will be burned, crushed, or just plain incinerated. Even still you have to consider Nuclear Fallout. "Fresh" radiation can kill you in a matter of minutes. It wont save you from death, you would just die knowing you did the right thing.
Obviously this advice is not applicable at ground zero, but the blast wave of an a-bomb is several miles, and ducking and covering WILL save you from harsh debris; It's better than nothing.
From what I understand about radiation, a newspaper or clothing will stop beta waves, your skin will stop alpha waves, but gamma rays are those which go through most everything. Radiation poisoning in your face & neck / head would be worst location. You'd also have to be careful not to breath radiated dust.
I don't think they meant this could save you from "ground zero" of the explosion. Being near the center of the explosion would vaporize you. Seems like they are giving people precautionary actions if you reside near the outskirts of a nuclear explosion where it can potentially burn you very badly, but not vaporize you. Still, there would be potentially lethal doses of radiation contaminating the air. If you were at "ground zero" they would tell you to head to the nearest bomb shelter.
because theyre obviusly white, as to whyyy theyre obvisusly white because it was the 50 and if they made this film you cant have that big expectations from them xD
people are stupid and gullible. They want an answer for everything and fail to realize that in some situations your just fucked and there is no right thing to do... so they made this bullshit up... besides if a nuclear attack happened its not like they could call the government out on it....
it's clear that if the bomb just hit your house you are fucked up, but if the bomb grounds some miles away you can still save your life with these methods. also, in '43 the atomic bomb wasn't that powerfull as now, so the radius of the explosion wasn't that wide. plus, this video was made for children and its goal was too lower the effect of a nuclear attack. damn they couldn't tell to the children that they could save their life in the 15% of the cases...
if you want the real explanation: the government wanted us to belive it was safe to duck and cover (even though u wouldnt) so we would "survive." so the militarty wanted us to think it was safe for us to use atomic bombs in the usa and japan ans ussr (russia) during the cold war.
Deedle dum dum...deedle dum dum!! I love it! In ways, this litte piece of nostalgia makes me long for the simplicity of the Cold War. At least we knew who the enemy was and how we would be destroyed. This shadowy war with a shadowy enemy that Western civilization is now engaged in is somehow unsettling...
yea dad. hide under the newspaper. that makes a GREAT shelter x] it wud've been quite funny if taht tractor kept going and ran over the guy xD imagine if someone did this now a days.... that wud be the funniest thing :D
wonder if the government ever considered telling them its 10 times hotter than the core of the sun in a nuclear explosion and they would be pretty much vaporized
I watched this movie in Chemistry class, and i agree with 1weirdgurl, that if a desk or any thing else will save your life, why bother to make a bombshelter or that crap...lol
it can smash in buildings and knock you down, or push you against a wall or radioactive fallout could sneak up on you and kill you slowly with many umpleasant symptoms.or you could be incinerated in an atomic blast and be left a simmering burht up mass. so remember kids duck and cover
We make fun of it, but really what else can you do if a nuke goes off? If you're not immediately killed, there isn't a whole lot you can do at that moment other than shield yourself from the initial flash burns. I'm also pretty sure they didn't want to discuss the after-effects with little kids for fear of scaring the living shit out of them.
That still wouldn't help at all. The reason they are telling kids to duck and cover is because they know if there is a bomb they're screwed, but as long as there isn't one, they'll feel safe because they think they know what to do. Remember how people would tell you what to do if someone tried to kidnap you? How many kids get kidnapped that actually are able to escape those ways.
7:45 shows me that even a thin cloth such as a newspaper or a blanket will protect me from, not only the skin melting heat from the nuclear bomb, but also the deadly radiation.
yeah right!!this is also the right way to survive an earthquake??suuuure...ok read about''triangle of life'' that's the only way to survive!!and i am not kidding..doug copp is the chief of the best rescue team..i hope you will read it and survive an earthquake..
Wow!!! Amazing! If children don't know how to survive a nuclear attack after this I would be shocked. I mean, they only told them to "duck and cover" 27 times...
it's cool the blast will do most of the throwing your body into walls for you. all you need to worry about is covering your body with highly flammable material like newspaper or picnic blankets to shield yourself from the super intense heat and hundred mph winds unleashed by the bomb not to mention all the cars and pieces of houses flying around
haha I know imagine if we HAD been hit with and atomic bomb and a bunch of students had died. Students in other areas would've been so confused. "But they "ducked and covered" mommy!" It's funny but it's sad and frightening at the same time.
yes Tony becausae that dinky little wall will save you from the radiation, wind and burn of the atomic bomb....and oh look a civil worker just suddenly is there to help you
about 7 minutes in haha we must OBEY!!! the civil defense worker. i don't have a teacher here with me, what shall i do with all these questions that i have? like how long does it take for everyone to find out that d&c doesn't work?

I'm also pretty sure they didn't want to discuss the after-effects with little kids for fear of scaring the living shit out of them.
gh0st3000 3 years ago 4
That still wouldn't help at all. The reason they are telling kids to duck and cover is because they know if there is a bomb they're screwed, but as long as there isn't one, they'll feel safe because they think they know what to do. Remember how people would tell you what to do if someone tried to kidnap you? How many kids get kidnapped that actually are able to escape those ways.

7:45 shows me that even a thin cloth such as a newspaper or a blanket will protect me from, not only the skin melting heat from the nuclear bomb, but also the deadly radiation.

Even a newspaper can help protect you from a burn!
BioticVanguard 3 years ago
it's cool the blast will do most of the throwing your body into walls for you. all you need to worry about is covering your body with highly flammable material like newspaper or picnic blankets to shield yourself from the super intense heat and hundred mph winds unleashed by the bomb not to mention all the cars and pieces of houses flying around

I remember in school in the early 80's we would do what they called tornado drills just like this.
Then I realized that we weren't anywhere near a tornado zone.
I guess it was a trick to keep from scaring us.

Good one Tony! Indeed very helpful! They should teach this all over the world so it would be a much safer place to live!
