I never knew rabbits had claws. That's all I'll say about how surprised I was when I first saw this, and I can tell you, the first time I saw this was a few weeks ago. Watching this video just made me scared of General Woundwort.
Well, the people who rated the thing are o blame. Though admittedly in my childhood they were not so strict with the ratings (gee, there arre children's movies I consider suitable. And people die there. ... all I say is "Disney") - but still, the rating is set too low with this one.
They have banned the human centipede 2 from united kingdom, yet very young children are going to be watching this and they will be horrifically scarred. I am 16 and this has disturbed me to say the least
I was about 8 years old the day my mother said "Oh, there's this film on about bunnies later. You should watch it-- You'll like it! It's for children."
@72AxelGriff No, to be honest it really isn't - though of course, it has cartoon rabbits, so a lot of parents assumed it was purely from that. Big mistake.
do you remember "The Animals of Farthing Wood" ? i was a fan in my childhood but one night i was looking for another film ( because of the publicty in "toys story" ) and i just change the channel and i was "Wow ! this is The Animals of Farthing Wood ! and i just watch about 5 min
my parent wasn't here but after a night with nice nightmare they woke up me and say " hello it's a nice day and there is "The Animals of Farthing Wood" at the TV "
they never understand why i suddently HATE this serie
i have never seen this movie, but just from this, i was shocked, i play a lot of left4 dead, but still, i felt a gut wrenching feeling in my stomach. my sister said it would be bloody, but the exposed brain and open stomach were stunning.
My friend told me to watch this movie, i youtubed it first and saw this video. After watching the video i was like "WTF is this a movie about zombie rabbits" then i watched the the real movie and i was like "OHHHH" honestly, this music makes it seems like a whole different movie haha
I remember, when I was a child (4 or 5 years old), I was once sick and was lying the whole day in bed. My parents brought me a box with cartoons and movies on VHS to cheer me up. On some casettes there were 2-3 movies.
And now guess which movie I hat to watch when it was already dark outside + I was alone at home. Right after Winni-the-Pooh and TMNT which were on the same casette, it was kinda traumatizing :D
1:35 A 'U' rating!! Suitable for all ages, contains MILD threat?!! WTF BBFC, you have got to be kidding me! I thought Indiana Jones 'PG' rating was ridiculous. I've watched films rated '15' for violence and darkness less disturbing than this! The music alone could make a person break down, the whole theme and plot is upsetting, and the BLOOD, blood in a U film WTFMFMHMB!?
yeah, I understand everyone saying it's not a kid story. That being said, I saw the movie when I was little and freaked the fuck out. I read the book when I was 10 and actually like it. I think the movie is just too creeeeepy.
This is a great movie. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of watching it when I was a little kid. I was looking for something MILDLY dark, maybe a little violent. Couldn't find anything, so I rented Watership Downs innocently. At first I was all "aww whatever bunnies, okay", then I was like "..... :( mommyyyyyyy..." But now I love it.
I watched the Omen on Netflix on demand and after watching it a few times, it started to creep me out. So I'm never gonna watch it ever again. Even the theme to the Omen creeped me out.
ya my mom bought me this movie when i was 6.... i NEVER watched the whole thing, i was terrified of the stupid death bunny! I thought he was gonna kill me in my sleep!
this movie kicked ass! This was probably in one of my top ten. This movie was definetly not for kids. This movie was so wise and it told the story of how wild rabbits live and how much it sucks. :) (Im not the best at giving summaries)
@theyoung1s14 Buddy, this is NOT a kid's film...but it doesn't have to be. That's just ONE of its good qualities; as far as I know, it's got a really good story, and it's definitely got excellent animation and interesting characters, but it's not for kids!
my mom bought this for me when i was like 8... mental. trauma. (i love it now though; an absolute masterpiece/a horrifying rabbit slaughter)[who new those two phrases worked so well togethar. >_> i still have it on the old VHS... good shit.
my mom bought this for me when i was like 8... mental. trauma. (i love it now though; an absolute masterpiece/a horrifying rabbit slaughter)[who new those two phrases worked so well togethar. >_>
OMG, I only just heard of this movie, I never knew how violent it is! If you pause at certain scenes like before the hawk and dog get the rabbits, or the train, the expressions of horror on those poor rabbits' faces!! O.O
I watched this when I was something like 6 or 7, can't quite remember... And I was so scared at some parts of it XD I've always remembered how Bigwig got gaught in that trap and almost choked to death and how all the rabbits got buried alive... But never had a single nightmare about it though.... Loved the movie none the less, even when I was smaller, but my brother (who was 5 when he watched it with me XD) never really learned to appreciate it... I wonder why... X'D
When i was about 6, i saw this movie. I was being haunted by it all this time but when it was shown again when i was 15, i decided to "Hey i can watch it, why not?
And i think now that this was actually pretty good movie.
i suggest showing this to kids when they're at least old enough to understand - about 7 yrs +, other wise they simply wont understand it, and will be scared -.- when i first saw it about that age, i simply loved it ^^ its the truth about the world - unlike most other children's animations, the whole thing is truth, that nothing is perfect
Watership Down is a litterary masterpiece . These things happen in the book, and it is not this story that is fucked up, it is the fact that we should clearly recognise our own species and not rabbits in this story.
Personally I think it helps growing up watching this and realizing that the things we do and don't do have a great effect on the animal kingdom and that they are living feeling creatures, not just cute little balls of fluff that are otherwise portrayed as.
oh my gosh the song so scary! and with the sceens you put with it it really suits like it made for it it gives me shivers but why can't i stop listing to it?!
The Down overlooks the village of Kingsclere in Hampshire, a few miles south of the town Newbury. Popular with kite flyers and owners of remote controlled aircraft!
Yeah, my parents rented the movie for me and my younger sisters and cousins. I was fine but my sister was up all night terrified. And it definitely would have scared me if I was younger when I saw it. It's definitely gorier than your average kid's movie but it's not bad, just unexpected for a movie about bunnies.
its a u movie so it for kids and although i dint expect it to be violent and with blood. but it not to bad and when they show it on tv for kids they cut out the violent bits. bigwig beats the general in the book. but in the movie they make it hard to c who wins.
I just finished reading this book, it was awesome..but I never though this animation would be this scary oO Looks scary as hell..but I think I still have to watch it.
Definitely watch it. This video, clever as it is, only shows the bloodiest parts and without the sinister music these parts aren't as bad. The rest of the movie is good. :-)
Watership Down is one of my favorite books of all time. I never saw the animated version until just recently- I was dissapointed with it- I think they could have done a much better job- and I agree that it is not for kids to watch!!!
My mom rented this movie when I was about 5 or 6 thinking it would be a nice kids movie. Turns out its not at all. I didnt really understand what was happening in the movie at the time, but looking at it now I definitely know this is not for kids.
It wasn't really intended to be. The same thing happened to my sister she hates it and told me not to watch it. I did watch a little bit of the gorey scenes by accident but I was fine. But that was I didn't know what happening.
listen i watched this when i was 5. i had already watched predator, aliens and terminator but none of those gave me nightmares.....this did. this film is disturbing for anyone of any age!
And I thin it is funny how "animated" is always associated with "made for children" which is appearently not true at all. Take a look at japanese animations some of them are even worse then this.
They were never made for children just like this movie
@TekilaCocktailSuRi Another western (western hemisphere, not cowboy, if anyone was wondering) example of mature animation is Felidae, which, as you likely guessed, is about cats. It's got not only violence, but also sex (not a pleasant sight if you don't like watching cat porn DX )!
@TekilaCocktailSuRi Mm-hmm, and Plague Dogs was made by the same people, so that makes sense. As for Secret of Nymh, it wasn't very faithful to the book, but it was still very well-animated! It was one of Don Bluth's better films.
@TekilaCocktailSuRi Maybe they weren't made for your children, but I saw it as a child and loved it. But, different kids handle different things. I certainly wouldn't force it on someone.
I agree with you, though, how animated=children in many minds. Those are the minds that care to not have to think, and use labels to do their thinking for them. Still, I looooved this movie as a kid.
@TekilaCocktailSuRi and yet "Ringing Bell" by the people who made Hello Kitty and Hello Kitty merchandise IS made for children. It has, in my opinion, far worse imagery than this film. So that brings me to 2 things this film has brought up.
1. How far mainstream western society will go to sheltering "the innocence" of children. Going far beyond simply talking down to them.
2. How we still live in a society where animation isn't well respected as its own art form. (ie: parents showing kids this)
Oh yeah, definitely not for really young ones. It's not a shiny happy kids cartoon. I'd guess probably 12 years and up would be ok. I thought the plague dogs was even scarier, the book anyway. Not sure if they made a film of that one?
Ahh I love the movie, and book. :D I saw the movie when I was 8. Ever since, Ive been obsessed with bloody cartoons and death metal... ^.^ Anyhow, this is one of my favorite stories of all time, and I think everyone over 13 should watch the movie and read the book :D
I agree with everyone on that fact that this simply isnt a childrens novel or movie. The subjects of government, death, and religion are simply to much for most children to grasp, mind you this was my favorite movie, book, and tv series when I was around seven or eight years old and still is to this day. Watership Down is a beautiful masterpiece for adults, not children.
I thank the lord my mom never let me and my siblings watch this. If I had saw it when I was young, I'd be scarred for life. Its scary seeing all of this now even, and i am 21 years old. i have to cover my eyes when that rabid rabbit is ripping out throats of other bunnies. No offense but just seeign how this movie would be with only 4 mins of tape, I'd never watch it.
I agree. I watched this when I was 8 years old (in Germany it was published in the AFTERNOON O_o). I thought it was a normal cartoon - later I couln't sleep well and was scared. I'm still scared today when I watch the video...But at least I know that it's just a drawing and not the same in real life.
I raise rabbits. And although rabbits in the wild may not randomly run up to another, and beat his brains out as at 1:15 , they still are rather vicious creatures. If you leave two domestic rabbits [who were not together their entire life, aka brother/sister/mother], then it is very likely they will destroy one another. Or if you take a sibiling away, and then put it back in the cage a day later they'll fight.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the weird thing is, this movie never scared me as a kid. me and my cousins used to pretend to be the rabbits from the movie...i guess its that nazi blood in us :)
i think when this movie came out we werent so strict on what material was supsosed to be in these. like many others i watched this when i was little and yes very freaky as you dont know its pretend when your like 5 or six. I'm sure the seagul says p**s off in the movie lol mind you, when i was younger we were watching things like neverending story when artax(the horse) dies and silence of the lambs lol
i watched this wen i was a little and it scared the living day lights outa me and gav me night mares and after seeing these vids bout it. it brings the horros back and im 16 now, i fink maybe it is a good film but not for it was tooo much wen i was younger and too much now i can stand saw films and all that but this is just a horror and allways will be for me haha i caint belive my mother let me watch this shes doomed me
i missed a word out lol........ i watched this wen i was a little and it scared the living day lights outa me and gav me night mares and after seeing these vids bout it. it brings the horros back and im 16 now, i fink maybe it is a good film but not for me it was tooo much wen i was younger and too much now i can stand saw films and all that but this is just a horror and allways will be for me haha i caint belive my mother let me watch this shes doomed me
I think this song matches better then the MM one, though MM is very good to! ^^ I grew up with horror, I started seeing chucky and Freddy when I was a little kid. And I played the games of Resident Evil. Al those years that followed, I've like seen al the horrors. Werewolves where my favorites. That's why this is'nt that scary for me .. If I would'nt grow up with horror, I would really be pissing in my pants. But you know, I can't believe they actually get away with showing this to kids! O=
This film has never been for children! I watched it when I was a kid and it scared the shit out of me, cute bunnies being ripped to pieces and fighting! I still feel uneasy watching it even now! If I had kids, I wouldn't let them watch this until they were 16!
err.. you are aware of the films kids under 16 watch nowadays? O_o this compared to them is nothing, believe me. When I saw this when little it made me curious, not that frightened.
I'm So freaked out! for a minute there I thought I was going to have to stop watching it. So like was this a film for children? cause OMG. that was some really freaky ass shit!
Wow...I have gone my entire life thinking I was the only kid who was ever scarred for life when my mom showed me this movie, apparently thinking animated bunnies were good for kids. Apparently she didnt watch it before popping it into the VCR, since I still can't get the image of the rabbit slowly being strangled to death out of my mind... Nice to know I'm not the only one ;)
just to note, I was 3 when she showed this movie to me. Beautifully drawn film, quality and care like you can't find anymore, but a little dark for kids that young.
You really want to be screwed up for life? Try Richard Adams' "Plague Dogs". Same animator but far, far worse. You'll probably need counseling afterwards.
No, Richard Adams didn't hate children. The books are quite good but he DID want to let people know that animals can feel pain, have feelings, desires, etc., and they get the bad-end of the stick due to people who don't give a darn about animals at all.
And the mom answers "sweetheart that is life. There´s no life without blood or death" "oh and the bunnies are fighting cause they don´t like eachother" that´s what I´d say
I love this film. Now you get crappy CG films these days. Also, is it just me or am i the only one that finds it funny when the rabbit jumps at the dog in slow motion.
This film is great. A true classic. It was PG here in the States (there was no PG-13 yet). Yeah, its not for real little kids, but older kids can handle it. People are just so damn politically correct, "Think of the children!!" today. Get over it. 90% of rap videos are worse than anything in this film. Besides, it sends a good message: That nature isn't always a Disney cartoon.
This film is a great and forgotten classic, one of my all time favorites. I recently watched this with my son on dvd and yes, the ending still chokes me up and brings tears to my eyes all these years later!
The fact this was given a U rating suggests either the folly of the people back in 1978, or that kids were a lot tougher [or were expected to be] in 1978. Either way, it's quite a disturbing movie, but no less disturbing than the real-life documentaries you see on Nat Geo or Animal Planet.
C´mon guys, this movie is not that horrible! Try to read the book and you find an awesome world and a great adventure :D

its a u movie so it for kids and although i dint expect it to be violent and with blood. but it not to bad and when they show it on tv for kids they cut out the violent bits. bigwig beats the general in the book. but in the movie they make it hard to c who wins.

I just finished reading this book, it was awesome..but I never though this animation would be this scary oO Looks scary as hell..but I think I still have to watch it.
Rikuhey 2 years ago 3
Definitely watch it. This video, clever as it is, only shows the bloodiest parts and without the sinister music these parts aren't as bad. The rest of the movie is good. :-)

Watership Down is one of my favorite books of all time. I never saw the animated version until just recently- I was dissapointed with it- I think they could have done a much better job- and I agree that it is not for kids to watch!!!

Cette vidéo est bien trop longue, et la musique est juste ennuyeux de répéter encore et encore.

I think Watership Down is an amazing movie.
And I thin it is funny how "animated" is always associated with "made for children" which is appearently not true at all. Take a look at japanese animations some of them are even worse then this.
They were never made for children just like this movie
TekilaCocktailSuRi 3 years ago 27
@TekilaCocktailSuRi Another western (western hemisphere, not cowboy, if anyone was wondering) example of mature animation is Felidae, which, as you likely guessed, is about cats. It's got not only violence, but also sex (not a pleasant sight if you don't like watching cat porn DX )!
mdalsted 1 year ago
@mdalsted I know it.
As well as I know Plague Dogs and the Secret of Nymh
None of them are really made for children.
TekilaCocktailSuRi 1 year ago
@TekilaCocktailSuRi Mm-hmm, and Plague Dogs was made by the same people, so that makes sense. As for Secret of Nymh, it wasn't very faithful to the book, but it was still very well-animated! It was one of Don Bluth's better films.
mdalsted 1 year ago
@TekilaCocktailSuRi Maybe they weren't made for your children, but I saw it as a child and loved it. But, different kids handle different things. I certainly wouldn't force it on someone.
I agree with you, though, how animated=children in many minds. Those are the minds that care to not have to think, and use labels to do their thinking for them. Still, I looooved this movie as a kid.
I wish I knew more like this.
Ever seen Fantastic Planet? Another good one
jody4403363881 1 year ago

^.^ Anyhow, this is one of my favorite stories of all time, and I think everyone over 13 should watch the movie and read the book :D

this was a childrens show!??
eigerbrad 3 years ago
no. just becuase its animated and has bunnies as the main characters doesn't mean its for children
Traceharia 2 years ago

Eviejean87 3 years ago
This video made it seem much scarier than the actual movie really is. Still not really suitable for little kids.

I've had mothers eat their babies, and it looks a lot like 1:40 only qorse, more disturbing. Because it's real.
This is a very good very realistic video, however I don't think I'd allow my children to watch it until they got a little older.
**Can someone tell me why it is called "Watership Down"? Does the book explain? Or is it reference to the ships they use to escape?**

Aussie3774 3 years ago 4
just to note, I was 3 when she showed this movie to me. Beautifully drawn film, quality and care like you can't find anymore, but a little dark for kids that young.
Aussie3774 3 years ago
You really want to be screwed up for life? Try Richard Adams' "Plague Dogs". Same animator but far, far worse. You'll probably need counseling afterwards.
mikecronis 3 years ago
lol...apparently a children's film animator that truly hated children.
Aussie3774 3 years ago
No, Richard Adams didn't hate children. The books are quite good but he DID want to let people know that animals can feel pain, have feelings, desires, etc., and they get the bad-end of the stick due to people who don't give a darn about animals at all.

Kawiia17 4 years ago 2
I love Watership Down but that bit is quite funny - so you're not the only one.
in2gear9661 4 years ago 2
This film is great. A true classic. It was PG here in the States (there was no PG-13 yet). Yeah, its not for real little kids, but older kids can handle it. People are just so damn politically correct, "Think of the children!!" today. Get over it. 90% of rap videos are worse than anything in this film. Besides, it sends a good message: That nature isn't always a Disney cartoon.
HailAnts 4 years ago 2
This film is a great and forgotten classic, one of my all time favorites. I recently watched this with my son on dvd and yes, the ending still chokes me up and brings tears to my eyes all these years later!
Danda1999 4 years ago 2
The fact this was given a U rating suggests either the folly of the people back in 1978, or that kids were a lot tougher [or were expected to be] in 1978. Either way, it's quite a disturbing movie, but no less disturbing than the real-life documentaries you see on Nat Geo or Animal Planet.
