Like the XBMC iPhone remote app, this isn't nearly as useful as a real remote. Do you want to turn on the phone, swipe, open the app, and then wait for it to connect to your computer OR just pick up a remote and go. Remotes with tactile buttons are also far easier to use in the dark. A novelty at best in my opinion.
Wait what? Remotes with tactile buttons are easier to use in the dark than a iPhone/pod with a brightly lit LCD? That makes absolutely no sense at all. This is far from a novelty. I do not own the standalone box so this app is the best I've got. It's excellent. Yes you go through some steps to turn it on, but the connection to computer is almost instant and not only does it control the direction and accept/back/Ok, you can pull up a keyboard. Once the app is up, it's kept up.
@shuyin131 Absolutely! I'll take a tactile remote (I can tell which buttons I'm pushing without looking at it) over a lit (who wants anything brightly lit in a home theater?) screen any day.
@petzoldhaus Oh really? What happens when you need to type and turn your remote over to use the keyboard in the dark? Still remember what keys to press? LOL Besides. If you're even using the remote at all, that means you're not watching a movie or you are interrupting it. The lit screen is of no consequence.
@shuyin131 On those very rare occasions that I need a keyboard (once a week maybe) I use my logitech dinovo mini. It's instantly on and glows just enough to see the keys. As for the way the remote gets used ... you haven't seen my wife watch movies and tv shows. She's using it constantly. Our remote (logitech harmony) does a lot more than just control XBMC (I gave up on Boxee some time ago). It dims the lights, turns on the projector and operates the receiver.
I find that clicking with the gestures mode is awkward. I don't like the wait between letting up on the logo and then clicking it again. And if you don't click it squarely, it'll think you're trying to move it around when you're not. You did just that 55 seconds into the video. I think I'll probably use button mode until that issue is resolved.
How did you get bbc iplayer on your apps given the fact you live in America?

Boxee is only good if you life in the states and can use hulu and so on. In europe xbmc is still the best htpc software :/
