I agree that the original is a great song, which doesn't fail to stir a feeling of melancholy in me. Yet "Weird" Al has been able to mix in a lot of humor, with that small squeeze of sadness in it. Damn, makes me want to go mix a drink! LOL!

Flyingbluewolverine, the song he's parodied is a very good song, "Piano Man - Billy Joel" which is sad in its own way, not from the vocals alone but via the music too. So when Wierd Al parodied this, he took the music to the song and just changed its lyrics. So it still remains sad yet funny?

Music itself often conveys a message seperate from the lyrics going with it. Wierd Al's parody of the lryics make me laugh. However the melody of the original song brings to mind a sad theme. Its one of the odd risk one takes with a parody.

Because the whole idea of a parody is mockery, and it is made so much more effective if the work being parodied has meaning. That's partially why this is my favourite from Weird Al, I also love this because I also love the song Piano Man. And I believe that mockery is the second highest form of flattery, and if any song deserves flattery, it's Piano Man.
