I find only one flaw in Lars' argument. Now we can burn CD's and what have you and it sounds just like the original recordings as well. I could by all of their music and burn it on to blank CD's and hand it out like candy and he couldn't stop me! Not that I don't respect his point of view I am a musician of over 30 years but times change and we can't stop it. He had every right not to want his music out there for free. I understand that. Throwing a fit like he did didn't help his cause.
I find it ironic that Lars had (and still has) such a problem with this when Metallica bounced Dave Mustaine from Metallica before Kill 'Em All came out, yet left his name off the record entirely and only gave him songwriting credit after being sued. Not to mention they used his ideas for several albums afterward.
Chuck D had a very well informed and open-minded approach to free file sharing and the entertainment industry, and this was over 10 years ago.
It is unfortunate that in all that time, government and big business have stubbornly and blindly pursued their work to outlaw the free exchange of such content.
@MattB0m Do you think you could email your address to me? I'm really interested in sneaking into your house in the dead of night & taking all of your valuable possessions. Kind of a "free exchange of content" type of thing.
Its funny how everyone had a go at lars for this, but he was total right. Downloading has ruined the music industry. Thats why there are very few new good bands breaking threw. Im British and other British people will have heard that the last Major Britsih Labal EMI has gone under and disolved into Universal. Thanks alot, thieving bastards
@nick0is0ace you do realize it costs like 2 dollars if that to make a CD but they sell it for 18.95 lars said it himself its pocket change still is pocket change there loosing by downloading from downloading you hear of new bands and new songs at the click of a finger the record labels are the people thieving they care more about top ten then they do artists EMI didnt go under IT WAS SOLD TO UNIVERSAL so point your fingers at them not us
@graffiti4LIF3 2 dollars? It's not just buying a blank cd and slapping some music on it. There's alot that people go through while making a song let alone an entire album. Get your ass to the record store and buy the cd. Respect the work put into the music. Itunes sells songs for about 2 dollars pure song and even I think that 2 dollars is not enough for an entire song. We have people that sing very badly over music they didn't make and they make WAY more money.
@clipsryan lol are you retarded itunes sells tracks for 1.25 because record companies take half that because of copy write it because people are greedy they bumped the price up it costs $3000 for studio time(an old friend runs one) 25 cents a CD from the factory in bulk and like 5 bucks for the album art it is just taking a CD and slapping music on it thats why millions of CD's are made everyday by indy bands and musicians and they still make money off of $10 CD's learn your facts
@graffiti4LIF3 Are you retarded. I was talking about the labor it takes to come up with a song and then record it. That alone is reason to support and buy the album. Not every album is 18 dollars and alot of them are used which marks them down to 5 dollars depending on the cd. $3,000 is still alot of money and for underground people, that's alot to take out of your pocket when your music can just be downloaded. Idiot.
@clipsryan that's a whole different argument you cant base a price on something just because it takes more time to make if that was the case it would be 30 instead of 15 the under 18 albums are what they call the "break out faze" gets your name out there after you have a hit they bump the price up on purpose to make more money 3000 is not a lot if your a good artist because 300 CD's at $10 sold gets your money back that's not even gold on the charts most don't even rent studio time
@graffiti4LIF3 I personally think that the artists that write their music and make sure it's original, deserve more money so call it charity. Alot of these underground artists, don't have gimmicks or name recognition to make money back or even make a living on somthing that took WAY more effort to create.
@clipsryan nothings original everything has been done in some way or another even if the lyrics are different they dont get recognition because the record labels sign people that will have hits on the first album that's why many artists get dropped there's no such thing as artist molding anymore plus you cant give a demo to a record label they wont take it (third party liability) and they buy the radio play(payola) so indy guys cant get the radio play they need
@voltronsky You can still buy a CD if you want. We just dont need entire brick and mortar stores dedicated to selling CD's. I actually prefer to own physical copies though.
@Xxsucram89xX I dunno, I really miss going to a store and browsing the metal sections and the t-shirts, mags etc.. not to mention the euphoric feeling of instant gratification, instead of waiting 3-12 days for the delivery guy who tries to deliver your cd while you're at work...
im used to see rappers saying it s all about the money, this heavy metal rich kid beats them all. Bye im going to play with my Monopoly, Metallica edition.
all you idiots that post comments about rich musicians and shit. do you know how much energie and nerves you need in order to create music? even fucking metallica came from nowhere and have to live together in cheap motelrooms. it's absolute logic, that you dont want people to steal your work on which you spend years of creating. in the near future there will be only poor produced demo records that will be a comercial for your fucking concerts, that would be fair. how would you like it?
@Xxsucram89xX No its not. Its really not. Its next to impossible for unestablished bands to make any money from their music. The metallicas and pink floyds and ac/dcs of the world will always find ways to make money but the new bands are fighting to keep their heads above water now. They have to spend everything they have on promotion and they struggle to make any money back, let alone turn a profit.
I find it funny that Lars talked like most artists owned their own masters. They didn't. Most record companies own masters. Lars wasn't fighting for "the artist" at all, he was fighting for the corporations that own the music artists make whether he knew it or not. It was never about "control" and all that, it was about the money. That's what it was always about it. If he just would've said that it would've been better for him I think. It was just so fucking fake and that's what people hated.
Everybody has it's opinion about the p2p apps and sites but the only truth into all this is that is a system that won't stop and that will continue doesn't matter if you like it or don't
everything metalica was built on what came before. the instruments, the style, the blazing guitar riffs. i am a musicologist, i study this stuff. so when lars says "original work" that really needs clarifying.
@NikkiInHollywood because im a music history reader... i embrace serious and honest music conversation... and black music vs the white industry is something NOT to be ignored. if you wanna chat, text, vid cam or what ever... hit me up with the math and we can get it done.
@linjapanese77 I just think thats silly to say Lars stole the blues or whatever...they were influence by the bands they like and thats it...the word stole is a bit of a overstatment
@NikkiInHollywood no one said lars stole the blue... your comment on the stupid comment was that robbery has happen over the years till this day with "intellectual property" and awesome blues songs... that whites have rob blacks of songs and writing... for instance, rolling stones vs lead belly and howling wolf... they "stole" their songs and became legends. and i suspect you never heard of them. so when you talk about "stealing" in the music industry, an mp3 is the least of Lars's problems.
@linjapanese77 but the original conversation was about Lars stealing the blues...not about white people...and do you think your the only one that knows about the rolling stones or Howling Wolf
@NikkiInHollywood the original conversation WAS about the robbery of blues... peep the statement i replied to you replying from... the homey never said lars slole the anything... but that music has been stolen from for ages especially when you dealing with black music and racial contingents... what make lars so special to fall victim to the music industry, because he's white?
@linjapanese77 Ok. first off...the original convesation was about lars...he said HE stole the blues...and why are you even making this a racial thing...thats why theres racism in the world
@NikkiInHollywood ok, im sorry, im going back and forth with a young white stubborn close minded idiot... my bad. i thought i was responding to a real conversation. i never insulted you, obviously what is true bothers you. good luck. by the way racism is bigger than youtube, conversation on race is another. goodnight.
