Only in a few rooms, and even then it doesn't really do anything, just chips the glass slightly allowing a bit of water in.

vita chambers are like checkpoints, when you die you spawn at the last one you past, so you never actually die. Except when they're turn off where you have to load a save. Hope that helps

WRT hacking, the only things you should hack IMO are safes, the two health stations near Steinman, U-Invent machines and rocket turrets.

Fixed machine gun turrets barely kill splicers, security bots tend to get in the way more than they help. Hack vending machines if you feel like it, like there's a few in the game that won't give you eve hypos or autohack tools without hacking, but you don't really need to do it to save money.
