Interesting that you make this comment. I have observed exactly the same thing over and over and over again with Ubuntu, and other Linux distros. It suddenly seems as if the bandwidth has increased. I have experimented with this quite a bit now, and it is 100% clear that there is a problem with Windows in regards to bandwidth. I strongly believe that Windows is sending/receiving other data that cuts down on the bandwidth. This happens without spy-ware infection by the way.
to be honest this might be a fluke. you'll need to do multiple tests, preferably taking turns, so in average the results will not be skewed.
Of course linux will get higher download and upload and with a slightly better ping, but the difference you'll discover after doing a proper test will not be this extreme, but still extremely obvious.
I was using those systems for about 2 years, my connection was 2mbit at the time, and really in linux standard stable download speed was two times faster than I should get which is 400 kb/s when in Windows 200 kb/s was super maximum.
If you don't actually know more than what you just said, please don't give your worthless opinion. I'm not saying anything offensive so don't get defensive, but with your current knowledge of Linux your opinion is useless.
I put ubuntu on here, and I started upgrading my PC. I Love the linux enviroment..Have been had too many bad experiences with windows. Linux Isn't user-friendly, but it is a hell of a lot better.
I agree I tried Ubuntu for 2 days and yet it surpasses windows xp. even got my wlan working which windows cp faild at. even with the proper drivers there was still some thing that din't work. ubuntu found every thing worked fine from scratch. so I am very pleased with ubuntu
The whole point of linux imo is to be able to use it to it's full potential, which you can't do using the gui all the time. I would reccommend to go to linux dot org and do the beginners course to get a general understanding of linux.
its because you guys probably left all the standard crap on the boot up and never edited the rc and also when into the gnome or kde startup config to remove what you didnt need hence takes alittle longer.
I booted XP with 6 items total on startup, not including what I was unable to configure. With Ubuntu, I have currently 6 items. Ubuntu boots faster, same machine.
ALL THESE OPERATINGS SYSTEMS ARE A RIP OFF OF ONE GREAT OPERATING SYSTEM IN THE EARLY 70's!!!!! THE NAME OF IT IS XEROX! the made the first GUI ( graphical user interface ) , only they didn't bring it on the markt , 7 years later Steve Jobds did see it , and buyed it , Bill Gates got in panic and actually did rip off their Mac.. but still Microsoft did a faaaaar better job then Apple ;)
disagree, afew software+ HARDWARE works on it , it doesn't get anything in it quick , you need to have even a cd to INSTALL ANY HARDWARE YOU GOT , at windows it just finds the hardware , and case is clear everything works on a windows , thats why windows is the best. and the rest is not.
THERE MIGHT BE 2 REASONS FOR THAT: LIKE chasrar SAID "thats your network adapter compatibility problem :) not the O/S" WHAT I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH OR THE SERVER YOU ARE USING TO TEST SPEED IS DISCRIMINING WINDOWS BASED USERS BY REDUCING THE BANDWITH. I SUGGEST YOU MAKE THE SAME TEST USING AT LEAST 5 DIFFERENT TEST PAGES (KIND OF TEST AND GLOBAL SERVER LOCATION)AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO FIND OUT WHICH OF THE 2 CAUSES I GAVE TO YOU IS THE RIGHT ONE.
Security software is a cheap fix for what should be already fixed in the operating system. That is why Linux doesn't use any and saves resources not running that stuff. Your AV software is probably already compromised and spewing virus code everywhere. Its only thing you'd never remove.
umm Linux dosent get viruses, and btw almost all Linux software is free. and there is programs that lets you to run windows based stuff under Linux, honestly i think windows is good for games and linux is good for work
the reason windows is preferable vs linux is the ease the not so hardcore users get. the downside is that windows does TOO MUCH without asking. example lays aside alot of your bandwith for purposes wich I want to shut down so I can max out my BW. but IF you are good enough to work ok linux machines then you get the full BW and a uch more stable machine.

Turn off QoS in network config and windows lets you use the rest of the capacity.

how dare you take away that bandwidth from Microsoft! It's not like it's yours!

i prefer windows xp alot more. linux can't recognize my sound cards, can't play games, and can't download .exe files. it's just a fail

i think it can do all those things,- and windows can't recognize sound card you need drivers

yes and no fat32 is faster, shockingly scary i know, but ntfs is aimed in the security side =).

firstly ubuntu took forever to startup... secondly in windows you had startup apps that were using the internet aswell as your browser. TURD!
