To be honest, the way I view that line, "they're still there, but he's all gone" may mean a man who has come back from that war is remembering another soldier who won't ever come back himself. Be it dead, or ruined from war, some men and women, NOW, will not ever return to this land as patriots, but they will have lived as a patriot, be it righteous or not, opinions do not change that fact. Where the real truth about humanity and history lies, is somewhere else entirely.

This is what our country is becoming, which is why we need real PATRIOTS, not fake ones, to stand up for our soldiers and make sure they are not being exploited. They should not be sent to war unless it is absolutely necessary, at which time they should have absolute support. That is why Vietnam was such a mistake. People came to realize it was not necessary, and some misguided ones took it out on the soldiers.
