Some say this is crap. If so, its haunting crap. I don't know jack about music, but this does something I can't describe. No wonder some can hear its beauty. And even though the drummer is not in this, she has her own little mysterious thing going on in their other songs. My hat is off to these girls and may the one who passed on rest in peace.
Yeah they are terrible.....the whole world knows that by now. BUT: Its actually a dammed sad song if you listen to the lyrics. Looking at the picture you can feel real pain there.
@BeerBubbha420 u would like sesame street in drag then, Now I caught you! (vienna sausages can never be called massive, thank gd u will never hurt anyone with that little thing.)
I heard they are making a movie about the Shaggs. (It's true.) I will be just like the Runaways, except that the music will be worse and the girls uglier. I can't wait!
There is a rather disturbing documentary about this band by Jon Ronson. It seems the girls hated their own music, but were forced to perform by their control freak father.
This is the sound of people being bullied - maybe that is why it is so popular.
Lester Bangs described their drumming as, "sounding like a peg-leg stumbling through a field of bald Uniroyals." He also described their guitar style as "sorta like 14 pocket combs being run through a moose's dorsal, but very gently." Still, he called their only album, Philosophy of the World--a masterpiece! On the other hand, Lester Bangs never left his room, consumed copious amounts of junk food and drugs, and died of an eventual overdose of Nyqil while listening to the Human League.
Ok Shaggadelics, I will concede one thing. Of all the Shaggs songs I have heard this is the least worst. This is probably because there is no sound of a drum set being rolled down a staircase as in the rest of the their songs.
Bagpipes and an accordion would definitely have helped. Certainly couldn't have hurt. I hope I don't appear too cruel, but does anyone else think they resemble Adam Sandler, Chris Farley and David Spade in their SNL "girls at the mall" sketches?
I can also say I'm not 'deluding' myself, I had no idea who the shaggs were when I first heard them, I even assumed they were a contemporary band, I was simply liking what I heard.
I can honestly say this music is great, and I'm a musician/songwriter, you just have to accept that some people (who generally have good taste) do genuinely like this, however incomprehensible that is. If nothing else, it's their vocal melodies that amaze me, just so many unexpected highs and lows. They kind of sing one note at a time, so you don't know where they're going till they get there, but even amidst that unpredictability there's always a sweet, slightly melancholy tone.
@FungusMossGnosis ouch you hurt me feelings not. You've never seen my drum other than the camera test and other videos on youtube so don't judge. And that is complete garbage.
There's just something so bizzarely beautiful about The Shaggs. Technically they aren't good, but the lyrics and the melodies are just so sincerly innocent. I understand why people can't find the beauty in their music, but I've really grown to love The Shaggs.
@sebberskyld I disagree. I think that they are good. In this song they are very good, the singing is unique. In other songs they're impossible to replicate. It doesn't matter if it's intended or not, the fact is that a unique set of human beings are the only people who would ever be able to make what amounts to a beautiful sound.
"Technically they aren't good" is one of the biggest understatements I have ever heard. The lyrics are childish. They sound like poems you'd find in a high school girl's diary or notebook. I can't discern any sort of melody, but if there is one, it's the same one in every song. But all of that is secondary compared to the playing. They are no where close to competence, and actually sound as if they are picking up the instruments for the very first time. I know. I'm cruel . . .
Have you seen the lyrics of any rock'n'roll song ever? I'd rather have the simple honesty behind these lyrics than the cock rock of a young 20 something guy with his guitar strapped way too low...
@EdiblePlanets i agree with you. people are just trying to go against the mold by trying to make this "music" someone that it isnt. its crap. plain and simple
@EdiblePlanets That is exactly the appeal. The melodies are "Learn to Play the Guitar" vol.1. The lyrics are 9th grade poetry journal. But these girls just seem to be enjoying playing and writing, despite the fact they were doing this at the insistence of their dad. For those of us who are musicians, it works as a sort of nostalgia trip for when we started. Nothing genius about it, and anyone who believes this it be "great" is deluding themselves. But it is sweet, and it is honest.
@EdiblePlanets Sorry man, but you really must be a musical imbecile/ mental midget if you cant hear the beauty, feeling and goodness in this. I question your emotional intelligence and artistic sensitivities. Of all the Shaggs tunes, this one stands as one even blockheads like yourself and others suspicious of "oddball", outsider aesthetics could enjoy or get. It isnt about technique, or perfect singing, or mastery over instruments--like the criteria American idol judges by.
@flowerdoodle Ignore EdiblePlanets, he's a complete tool that's been trolling the Shaggs Vids. Obviously someone that's all burn't up over his own failures.
@flowerdoodle I often notice that the fans of a particular artist reflect the quality of the artist themselves. For example, if you criticize the latest no-talent rap or pop star, the fans lash out with profanities and gorilla grunts . . . Criticize true artists, like the Beatles, and their fans will either just ignore you or give you a "tisk, tisk".
You, a Shaggs fan, launch into a personal attack in response to criticism.
@EdiblePlanets I happen to love the Beatles--in fact, they are my favorite band. You would find it difficult to find a truer, more devoted fan. That said, if I heard someone criticize them in a public forum, I would step up to defend them and try to make the wayward soul see the light and the error of his/her ways. Now, Im not comparing the Shaggs to The Beatles. Theyre a different class of artist. I guess you just cant hear it. Just as some folks cant see certain paintings, or understand poems.
@flowerdoodle im also a huge beatle fan, my fav band. but the beatles had been playing their instruments for ages, they had better recording conditions and writing, and they did it cause they liked it. this song in particular is as good in not better than any beatles song. they didnt want to play in a bad and didnt even know how to play their own instruments. so this is pretty damn good.
@EdiblePlanets I will say that you seem to have great taste in music (w exception to Muse) otherwise, based on your list in your profile. This is all the more puzzling that you cant hear something novel, fun and cool in some of The Shaggs material. Do you dislike Captain Beefheart? Zappa?
I finally made it to Fremont , NH to see for myself the actual town where this legendary girl band originated. I thought there would be a plaque or something in their honor..Nothing I could find. I guess the townies don't have an interest in local history. The Fremont Pizzeria on Rte 107 was worthwhile visit but nobody knew about The Shaggs ..
It doesn't suck as much as the other songs because the drummer doesn't play. In fact it would suck even less if the singer stopped singing, and the guitarist playing. Oh, wait ! Enjoy the silence after a Shaggs song... Even better than after an ACDC song !
Dozens and dozens of popular "so-called" musical artists and songwriters would be challenged to write a melody with as much charm, depth, beauty and sensitivity as "My Cutie" has.....and yet it sprung from the mind and heart of an awkward, pudgy, young New Hampshirian girl with no background or experience. We all may have melodies that run within us but its transitioning and forming them outwardly into song which is tuff
I really like what the people in the Shaggs pages have to say and the sensitivity and insights ya'all have towards music like this. There is a very sensitive, melancholic subtext running through their melodies and playing that I like.
The Shaggs are like a flower in your backyard, really, there's not so much artistic thought about it, it's just here and it's beautiful partly because of that, because it's possible at all in the music business.
This is the best that I've heard so far while checking out The Shaggs youtube songs. Did this song ever make the radio? It sort of sounds familiar. Was that something about the key of G sung as part of the lyrics?
i think i enjoy listening to their music because on the album they just look so happy, like they know they're awesome even if other people don't think so.
they may not be what could be considered talented but they seem happy, which i guess is what makes me happy when i listen
it's so hard for me to make up my mind with the shaggs, some songs are really terrible but with touches of greatness, and then this one has a kinda infectious innocense about it and is actually very very pretty, almost reminds me of syd barretts work
Amazing drumming! She's got the delicate restraint and swing of the best jazz drummers, combined with the erotic pulsations of a heavy bues back-beat. I wonder who influenced her? No doubt paid her dues in Gospel Bands and the roughest part of the Chitlin' Circuit, which I hear she shorted.
They are better than the Beatles. The Beatyles were relentlessly commercial imitators, brilliant synthesists, but essentially insincere.
These girls are the real thing. All they needed was some sympathetic musical technical assistance, and they would have been MONSTERS!! An entire generation would have hung on their every word.
Not pale, second rate imitators of black music, but the real thing,. I blame myself! Why wasn't I there playing keyboards? No, I'll never forgive myself.
@Delta1 Give me a fucking break? You wanna know who never got a fucking break? The Shaggs, that's who! Pure, unmitigated (if that's the word I want) brutal cultural suppression, all from fear! They knew these girls were gonnna change everything, and capture and change an entire generation! If the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, the Shaggs would have been more popular than GOD!!
I think the one on the left is sorta cute! Do you know if she likes me?
I can dig that you want the guitarist's tel number. Now that's what rock and roll is about but if we're talking cultural suppression, I must sadly put in a word for the way black Americans have been treated in the American society in general. I think that would be my definition of cultural suppression.....
@Delta1 Oh, don't be ridiculous, Delta! Were Black Americans dragged over here in chains and enslaved? Were Black Americans subjected to 150 years of brutal legal discrimination, even while they made the greatest contributions to American music, developing several completely unique forms of music, and making immense contributions to every other type? You call that suppression? Ha! For God's sake, look at the shoes the Shaggs have to wear! Now that, my friend, is suppression!
@Delta1 Oh, don't be ridiculous, Delta! Were Black Americans dragged over here in chains and enslaved? @Mooser42001 Their Dad wouldn't even let them show toe cleavage!
I'm telling you, those girls make Aretha Franklin sound like a woman idly humming a tune in the supermarket! You got anything more to say? Roll it out, fool, and I ain't lieing! Show a little respect.
I think Frank Zappa was joking when he said they were better than the Beatles, I mean seriously, how could you compare the 2, the beatles were the best band ever, the Shaggs were the worst band ever, super amateur and should have never been recorded, but at least the guitars are in tune on this one, anybody that likes this band must be tone deaf, or possibly trying to be cool because they like an obscure band, get real, the Shaggs are PATHETIC....
I think this shows that they actually did improve over time. Maybe if they had been allowed to live normal lives, they would've developed more naturally and become an actual band.
This song is their best that I've heard. I think because the drums are really quiet, so the fact they're playing to a completely different beat doesn't matter.
I don't much care for their later stuff. Too polished.

i think i enjoy listening to their music because on the album they just look so happy, like they know they're awesome even if other people don't think so.
they may not be what could be considered talented but they seem happy, which i guess is what makes me happy when i listen
mickie825 1 year ago
@mickie825 Not sure how happy they were...Father forced them into it and the day after he died of a heart attack they broke the band up.

@webwillie1 doesn't matter if they WERE happy, my point was their look of happiness makes me happy

it's so hard for me to make up my mind with the shaggs, some songs are really terrible but with touches of greatness, and then this one has a kinda infectious innocense about it and is actually very very pretty, almost reminds me of syd barretts work

I'd say this song is one of their better put-together ones. I genuinely like it!

I LOVE THIS BAND. SCREW THE BEATLES.

Amazing drumming! She's got the delicate restraint and swing of the best jazz drummers, combined with the erotic pulsations of a heavy bues back-beat. I wonder who influenced her? No doubt paid her dues in Gospel Bands and the roughest part of the Chitlin' Circuit, which I hear she shorted.

fuck the runaways
these girls are the first all girl punk band
make a bio pic about them

They are better than the Beatles. The Beatyles were relentlessly commercial imitators, brilliant synthesists, but essentially insincere.
These girls are the real thing. All they needed was some sympathetic musical technical assistance, and they would have been MONSTERS!! An entire generation would have hung on their every word.
Not pale, second rate imitators of black music, but the real thing,. I blame myself! Why wasn't I there playing keyboards? No, I'll never forgive myself.

give me a fucking break
Delta1 1 year ago
@Delta1 Give me a fucking break? You wanna know who never got a fucking break? The Shaggs, that's who! Pure, unmitigated (if that's the word I want) brutal cultural suppression, all from fear! They knew these girls were gonnna change everything, and capture and change an entire generation! If the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, the Shaggs would have been more popular than GOD!!
I think the one on the left is sorta cute! Do you know if she likes me?
Mooser42001 1 year ago
@Mooser42001
I can dig that you want the guitarist's tel number. Now that's what rock and roll is about but if we're talking cultural suppression, I must sadly put in a word for the way black Americans have been treated in the American society in general. I think that would be my definition of cultural suppression.....
Delta1 1 year ago
@Delta1 Oh, don't be ridiculous, Delta! Were Black Americans dragged over here in chains and enslaved? Were Black Americans subjected to 150 years of brutal legal discrimination, even while they made the greatest contributions to American music, developing several completely unique forms of music, and making immense contributions to every other type? You call that suppression? Ha! For God's sake, look at the shoes the Shaggs have to wear! Now that, my friend, is suppression!

Bear in mind, Delta 1, I am fighting for the Shagg's honor, which, I hear, is more than they ever did!
Mooser42001 1 year ago
I think Frank Zappa was joking when he said they were better than the Beatles, I mean seriously, how could you compare the 2, the beatles were the best band ever, the Shaggs were the worst band ever, super amateur and should have never been recorded, but at least the guitars are in tune on this one, anybody that likes this band must be tone deaf, or possibly trying to be cool because they like an obscure band, get real, the Shaggs are PATHETIC....

I hope so, cause they don't! And really, why should they?
Mooser42001 1 year ago
I think this shows that they actually did improve over time. Maybe if they had been allowed to live normal lives, they would've developed more naturally and become an actual band.

This is the most melodic I've ever heard The Shaggs. But it's when the drum comes in that it gives them their distinctive stamp.
qwisp 2 years ago 3
This song is their best that I've heard. I think because the drums are really quiet, so the fact they're playing to a completely different beat doesn't matter.
