@mcfuzzynuts you have to choose your cichlids because mixing south american and african cichlids is not a good idea, also an oscar is supposed to have 50 gals to themselves so you will have to get a bigger tank if you plan on getting an oscar, oscars will also eat anything that fits in their mouths and are pretty aggressive so you'll need to get same size fish
@awinski999 do the catfish and the oscar get along? i have a 10 gallon with a small pleco, and a small red devil cichlid, i had 3 amber tetras but the red devil ate them lol. could i keep oscars with cichlids and catfish? btw this is just my starting tank, im not geting anything big untill i get aq 50 gal, and even now if my pleco grows to large i have a koi pond he could live in
@mcfuzzynutz yea that are all in a tank together check them out. and i wouldnt get any other fish in a 50 unless you're planning on going bigger in the future. and yea red devils can me mean. but they have such personalities
Are they aggressive? I am in the process of setting up a catfish tank... I currently have x2 Striped Raphael Catfish and x1 Spotted Raphael Catfish. I also plan on having about a dozen Corydoras, and a pair of Hoplosternums. It would be really nice to have a pair of Jaguar Catfish as well... Just don't want to add any bullies to my tank :P I noticed you have a Raphael so I'm assuming it shouldn't be an issue?

I purchased a Jaguar and a Raphael from pets smart for my 55 gallon. They said that they only grow to 6" at most and will not eat other fist...is this true...this is an angel fish tank and i have some tetras in it that I am guessing will become food for the angels sometime in the near future. After seeing this I'm wondering if I should not have these 2 catfish together in a 55g....you opinions?
@MrSinnbox well raphy cats are community cats they enjoy company. I own three two stripped and one spotted the baby striped always follows and hides under the fins of the older one. you should be fine. o and if you have trouble gettin them to eat I got a vid for preparing catfish food on my channel.
I cany believe they carry jaguars at your petsmart, you are soooo lucky
@MrSinnbox i know you posted 3 months ago but a jag cat grows to 8-10 inches imo its fine for a 55G mine is a 55G long..but a raphael i dont remember exactly but there peaceful and no way theyll be eaten by angelfish itll be the jag cat who eats them if they fit in the jag cats mouth..
Are these community fish? Becuse the oscars don't make it seem that way....I was thinking of getting one but don't want it to kill everything in my tank...I have black skirt tetras gold barbs a corydora a rapheal cat and a featherfin syno.... any ideas?
This fish is fantastic? His price? Your aquarium is very nice. Compliments. You can see my aquarium in "Acquario pesci tropicali - VINCENZO IANNI". Ciao. Vincenzo.
how big do these cats get?... and what do you say is probaby the average cost for them... I'm thinking about getting one for my 55 gallon tank... If thats even the right size tanks for them
They usually grow up to 8 inches, though 10 inch isn't impossible. But I have only one that has grown to that size.
I honestly have no idea what they might cost in the United States, sorry. I don't even know what a guppy costs in US :)
55 sounds a bit small to me, but then again, I usually go for "overkill" tank sizes if compared to recommended minimums. 55 g might do if the bottom surface area is big and there's plenty of hiding places.
Of course I don't know what you think about when you think of a catfish - around here people tend to think about plecos when someone says catfish -which makes no sense if you know anything about catfishes :) But Tatia perugiae is a pretty cool looking little catfish and you could easily have about ten of those. And of course there are some less fancy, more "catfishy" species in the Tatia group. Also family Pseudopimelodidae has some very interesting species. Hope you find something you like.
I decided to go with a Frogmouth Catfish... also called the Chaca Chaca Catfish... The one thing about Catfish I don't like is I never see them... The Frogmouth is even harder to see as it buries itself in the sand a lot...I might get some other catfish that won't bury itself
Sorry, I live in Finland so I have no idea of US prices. They get around 8-10 inches maximum, so tank size wise it would be ok. I have no experience keeping gars so I'm not going to comment their compatibility.
They were imported from Peru by a local fish shop. I believe your best bet would be calling aquarium stores if they import their own. Large whosalers/ holding stations may not have jaguars often since it's not really a money maker fish.
Awesome tank, awesome fish in general, how big is the tank?, It also looks pretty bright, is that for the plants? Because I bet the catfish would come out more if the tank had peat extract.
Yup, the lighting is for the plants. During the time this was shot it wasn't yet fully planted, but now there's a lot more vegetation.I have used peat extract and such time to time, but usually I just don't bother, as I tend to spend most time watching the tank during nightime. I recently found my old "moonlight" I bought for a reeftank that I never had enough money to complete and it's just enough to see the cats and their natural nocturnal behaviour.
Those shown in the video are lookwise kinda near to the Rio Negro oscar. They resemble more like a natural form with a lot less red in them, but the video is back lit and makes them seem a lot darker than they really are. These days they look like any other oscar that haven't been bred for coloration, just a little bit of red in them.
Thanks! The jaguar isn't an adult yet, I would say that when this filmed it was about 6inches. My biggest jaguar is about 9-10 inches, and the raphael is around 9 also. I used to have a freak raphael though, she was way over one foot long. Either raphaels can grow pretty large or she wasn't a true P. costatus.
I'd say (it's just a gut feeling though) that jaguars grow a bit faster than for example raphaels. The smallest ones I have we're about two - two and a half inches long when I got them, and in a year the smallest one I had was about an inch smaller than the one on the video.
Well my recommendation for a tank size would be around 90 gal, but if the tank isn't very high and has a larger bottom surface area, it could work. Just make sure the tankmates are not either too agressive or of edible size and provide plenty of hiding places.
Well, I see them about once a week with lights on, but just as soon as the lights go out, out come the catfish and start roaming around. So I see them pretty much every evening if I take a small red lamp, but if theres any more light, the catfish will disappear just as quickly.
It's the same kind of sand used for sand blasting. The gravel size is 0,6 to 1,2 millimeters. Very basic almost pH neutral air dried sand, great for scaleless catfish and burrowing species.
Possibly yes, if the JD isn't too aggressive and if you have plenty of hiding places where the cichlids can't get into. That said, I probably wouldn't get one if i was you, since these cats produce a lot of crap and you have a pretty heavily stocked tank, so nitrates could rise. But if you wan't to add plenty of driftwood and rocks to create hides, it might be worth a try. It basically comes down to how much you wan't to modify your tank to fit in a fish that you'll see once of twice a month.
Just nice...that is one beautyfull catfish...it´s the first time i see one by the way...but are they suitable for a Ocar tank??? please answer me becouse i´d kill to have oscars
Yes, they do fine with oscars. Those baby oscars on the video have now grown up and are about one foot long. The catfish will be fine if 1)There's enough room and hiding places where oscars can't get into 2) The cats are atleast 5-6 inches long. You'll probably need to experiment with feeding techniques so cats get fed too, and I recommend getting atleast three of these cats, as they tend to get more active with conspecifics. Also you need a large-ish tank, preferably bigger than 150 gallons.
