I am moving & relocating 2 VA from TN. I just broke off a yr long relationship with sum1 I really care bout deeply cuz of the move & sum serious health issues I am going thru. I have a feeling I am gonna relate 2 this song well when I get 2 VA... :(
The original was in 1974 UK on Bell Records 1377 ( that may be wrong number I have the disc somewhere ) by Vicki Britton . Played alot specially on radio Luxemburg but was not a hit . The B side Hatful of Nickels was very strong too- story of Travellers - subject a bit like Cher's Gypsies Tramps and thieves . Chorus went - Papa preaching hellfire - Mama singing loud - We took lots of money from the innocent crowd - Shouting Hallelujah got em everytime - Made us a hatful of nickels and dymes !!
Wow...this was a great retro 80s country song that brings back many memories! Shelly was so awesome. Looking back, the 80s had some real good country songs. Miss those days.
I am a Kentuckian with strong ties to Tennessee. My grandfather was from Knoxville and I went there for many summers. I became a huge Tennessee Vols Football fan and love to hear Rocky Top rock the whole town.
Shelly West is definitely one of the most underrated country singers from the early 80's. Both with David Frizell and her solo recordings, she always hit the ball over the fence with her great vocals. This song was one of her best!
Shelly's cover hit #4 in Billboard, 9-17-83. Who had the original version, since it was written by an English songwriter, Ronnie Scott? Somebody let me know. God bless!

It's the Vicki Britton version that I love too. I loved Radio Luxemburg and listened to it under my bed sheets!!

Thank you for spelling Tennessee correctly. I live here and I hate to see it misspelled.
