  • Get a copy of Aunti Mame! you'll be blown away... and these posing, pretty faced starlets that grace the pages of People, etc. will never measure up. None have the charm, class or wit of this great woman.

  • We would have loved to have known her. Thanks to YouTube we can at least know the woman she was in this world and the rich legacy of artistry she's left behind and follow suit!

  • We would have loved the have known her. Thanks to YouTube we can at least know the woman she was i this world and follow suit!

  • I cannot even begin to fathom why anyone animal, vegetable or mineral; would vote a thumbs down or add a nasty coment to this video for such a great, classy & accomplished lady of the arts. Indygoguy, you should hang your pitiful head in shame for the drek that your mouth spews, dude. Self-hating troll at best. For the rest of us who know class, respect the devout efforts of others helping fellow humans in need of wamth & comfort; can appreciate Rosalind Russell. Peace to those who hear my words

  • To me one of the greatest actors of hollywood,So love her movies

  • What a class she has, I love all her movies

  • A magnificent woman, pure class. She reminds me so much of my grandma! Her movies should be required watching for each generation that is to follow.

  • Humble, Humility is Rosiland Russell thanks Auinte Mame

  • Thanks for sharing this! My Gran loved her and now my Gran has advanced dementia. So anything with Miss. Russell will always have a special place in my heart. What GRAND CLASS she was!

  • I have always loved Ms. Russell. What a loving tribute Mr. Sinatra gave her. She was so wonderfully giving. Thank you for this post.

  • Funkeecat you are an idiot, Roz was a great woman. Do you always take everything so literally? Get a life idiot!

  • When she did Auinte Mame on Broadway she said she would have played that part forever and she agreed to do Auinte Mame on Broadway on one condition, That she star in the movie. Smartest decision Hollwood made, She is Auinte Mame and she said her self it was he all time favorite role.

  • Class all the way. Love you Roz!!

  • She gave so much of herself and never complained about the fact that she suffered for 16 years with breast cancer and debilitating breast cancer. She is the meaning of "grace."

  • Roz is one of the BEST!

How is it that there are 4 "dislikes"?

Can't imagine anyone not loving Roz!

  • @16sylvan Those dislikes must come from younger people who find it necessary to keep up with the kardashians...and other such non-stars that we are saddled with today. No appreciation for the Hollywood that once was great and something to be proud of.

  • That story that Sinatra is telling isn't true at all. She unpacked her makeup and went directly to a children's hospital? Please. I'm sure she did charitable work but I hate when people flat out lie.

  • Absurd and absolutely unforgiveable that Russell was not in the top 25 actresses in film history. Ava Gardner and Jean Harlow over Russell? Nonsense.

  • @iriisblue HARLOW!!! I had no idea about that! What a joke!

  • no, she worked behind the scenes and hid the fact that she had terminal cancer

yes, a lot of today's stars are self-serving, but not this lady

  • Wow, hospital, orphanages, old folks homes. How lucky she was that there were people who suffered so she could play the role of Florence Nightingale. In the end it is all about her isn't it. Wow. Hollywood was always filled with self centered bores, it is just that they weren't so brazen about it then. Nowadays they sit around waiting for a disaster so they can put their name on the relief. They act absolutely joyful when there is a tsunami or an earthquake, and they never give anonymously.

  • @Indygoguy

If you listen you'll hear that she spoke of the "countless numbers" of volunteers who were "giving of themselves". She SAYS, "you might think I was special . . . Far from it". Her speech consists mainly of a tribute to others who have done charitable work as well as those who helped her when she was in need. Seriously, her words are quite the opposite of those that would be spoken by a self centered bore. I'm just sayin . . .

  • i love her beautiful inside and out always and so graceful and confident

  • 4 People need some serious help!

  • I loved the way she spoke about others during her speech; such humility, simple kindness and monumental monetary generosity. She never once pointed the spotlight upon herself. Roz never mentioned herself at all in her words, in fact. She spoke of people of all backgrounds or political persuasions helping those less fortunate than themselves. She is a good, righteous person that we can learn from. Dear Roz, dear madam, dear woman, RIP.

  • Please post Frank winning his JH award!

  • I loved her Mama Rose!!!!

  • a great actress and a wonderful, courageous person

Rest In Peace Auntie Mane /Roz

  • l like that movie she was in called My sister Eileen the 1942 version. It was hilarious! Very good actress. She was very talented and one of a kind.

  • Frederick Brisson must have been a great man to marry this WOMAN.

  • She was classy, beautiful, and so funny....

  • Watching this, I got choked up..what a Lady...a true Lady.

  • What the Hell happened to Hollywood? No class anymore NOT LIKE THIS!!!

  • Roz was a fine actress, and a great humanitarian. She was a good Catholic, and often referred to her parish as Our Lady of the Cadillacs. All class.

  • Roz was unbelievably funny. She was a great comidienne along with Lucille. I just love Rosalind, she will always be the best.

  • wow...

they just don't make 'em like that anymore.

  • I actually did not know of her charity work, interesting and what a lady she was.

  • Madonna is the Rosalind Russell of our time.

  • @mcqueen12345667 Ah not quite the same class I'm afraid

  • @mcqueen12345667 with several differences: Miss Russell had class, talent and was a lady...none of which can be said about Madonna.

  • @miladyfencer ~ I agree. Madonna's name shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as Roz'.

  • R.I.P. Rosalind..such a beautiful talented kind and entertaining lady and actress..you will always be remembered and your films always enjoyed.

  • God love her.

  • Rosalind Russell was just amazing. She had so many one line jokes in "His Girl Friday", and it's hysterical. She was terrific in "Rosie" and in "Auntie Mame". I always think of her when I think of "Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows" and "The Trouble with Angels". If you haven't seen any of the movies I mentioned, you're in for a treat once you do.

  • There goes Hollywood, au revoir mon cher.

  • an incredible icon and humanitarian. I miss her.

  • MY FAVORITE ACTRESS TOO.

  • I'm interested in learning about her acting

  • One of my favorite actresses of all time! My two personal favs: The Women (1939) and Picnic (1955). She always brings a smile to my face.

  • so much class..........nobody left like her.

  • For those of you complaining about Mrs Russell and her agenda, get a grip. Your going down a road that is going nowhere and most of us have no interest in. Find someone else to criticize.

  • Gosh, I just looove her. May she rest in peace. She was amazing!

  • angelina and madonna have made it very IN to go to africa and help them...i hear more about what they do anymore than thier own careers...but those 2 are sslaves to pop culture 1st and good human beings later..roz had it all..funny sweet...wish i had been old enough to see her in her prime but alas im only 37

  • Because competition was so fierce back then, Roz got an Oscar, but not for acting, which is really to bad. Roz is right there with Bette, Joan, Greer, Barbara Stanwyck also a special Oscar, Myrna Loy also a special Oscar. Anyway. Back then those Dames made many pictures. She is Hollywood Royality.

  • one of the most underrated actresses of our time - and isn't she right - our great tradition is to give of ourselves to help one another - how sad that we had now abdicated that responsibility to the government.

  • a great lady . a great speech.

  • Also, I wonder - was the audience standing as she spoke? Lord knows they should have been.

  • I can watch this over and over - thank you! She was a wonderful actress, humanitarian and seemingly good soul. Her works are an inspiration to all of us. RIP

  • @sueman5 I HAVE watched this clip over and over in the past year or so. Every time I need to be reminded what TRUE grace and REAL HUMANITY and TRUE Humility are!

There was no greater comedic actress than Roz. Unafraid to tackle musicals, comedies or drama, Roz Russell Is (was) a TRUE Celebrity before what passes for celebrity now a days!

We all miss you, ms. Russell

  • Roz Russell was a great movie star and to my knowledge never an unkind word was spoken of Her.

  • Why on earth would they get that arrogant slob to give an award to such a classy, incredibly talented lady? Of all the people never to have won one presented by one of the most overrated winners of all time...

  • Why don't you ask Roz, instead of us? She and Sinatra were in fact fine friends, and I trust her judgment more than yours.

  • I despise Frank Sinatra! He was a racist, loud mouth, angry, arrogant drunk!!!

  • he was not racist. far from it.

  • @oranger2525 Frankie at gaming table to female Korean-American card dealer: "You don't like it, go back to China." In the early 60s, he would do some sort of Amos'n'Andy schtick. He also had some choice words about Jews. Why a genuinely classy lady like Roz Russell would be in Sinatra's social circle is mystifying. No one's denying he was charitable, but uncooth to put it mildly.

  • @SkankExpose I wonder if scores of celebrities down on their luck who he quietly helped like Woody Herman and Joe Louis would agree with you. Or the cancer patients and many others he helped. Or the songwriters who never had a better friend.

  • Well he really said it all! What a woman!

  • She must have had a full life with all those causes, and must have been very humble that she was helping others. Good for her, bless you Ros. Shame the celebs of today couldn't be more like her.....

  • Of all the famous actresses who starred in "The Women" she was definitely the one who stood out.

  • roz, a great lady, talented actress, an angel... i've been a classic movie addict since i was a child... and there's no actress that can make me laugh and cry all at the same movie... she's a gem... you'll always be remembered my dear ROZ...

  • God bless her memory. God bless her for all she did for others - a great woman, a great American, what the word "star" truly means.

  • Thank you very much for this posting. As all have said......she was a Great lady and not enough honoured or appreciated for her brilliant dramatic and comedic talents. I used to see her in the late 60's early 70's in Food Giant Market Beverly Hills doing her shopping. In the days when legends could walk among us. She was all swollen from the medication to help with her crippling arthritis. She suffered terribly, was mostly in pain since many years. There are no more such role models in Hollywood

  • I never knew all these great things she did. But I've always thought she was a real lady and I love all of her movies that I've seen.

  • What a classy lady.

    Wonderful actress.

    And a beautiful woman.

  • These two people are among my short list of heroes. Sinatra and Russell. Great people are few and far these days.

  • A totally fantastic woman. She used her fame, and hard work to help countless numbers of people. THAT'S what being a star is! (Compare this woman with the drunk and doped up scofflaw "bad boy/bad girl" young misfits who call themselves "actors" and "celebrities" nowadays). Standards are hitting new lows for Hollywood.

  • she was not well? what happened to her?

  • She suffered severe arthritis and breast cancer. A truly fine human being in every way. RIP.

  • beautiful! What a great lady she was. We miss you Roz.

  • Before I saw Rosalind Russell in Auntie Mame, I saw her in person in New York City. I was on a trip with my family and I was about nine years old at the tine (it was about 1954). She was a member of the Rockettes (sp?) dancing team and I was told to go up and ask for her autograph. She was so gracious and I still remember her bending down from the stage to write her name on a piece of paper for me. I still have that autograph. She was indeed a special lady!

  • Sinatra is so full of it.

  • She was special, a great comedienne and often quite good in drama too. I just saw her in "The Citadel" with Robert Donat, where she fit right in with the British cast and underplayed beautifully. And she OWNED the role of Auntie Mame. I believe she was well loved in Hollywood, and I'm sure this award made a lot of people happy.

  • Thank you so very very much for posting this - terrific in every way.

  • Thanks for uploading this video. Rosalind Russell sure was a great lady. She beautiful inside & out. A very talented actress, one of my favorite. God bless your soul. You'll be remembered for a very long time. Thanks Roz for your contributions.

  • She wasn't all that old, either, when she died, just 69.

  • I ahve to agree with Chilosito..They dont make em like that anymore..I love Rosalind Russell...Like they use to say back in the day...That Dame had class..

  • @JBfanforlife

Well said and well done! CLASS is certainly the word that best describes this lovely, talented, charming & generous woman! Stars like her are SORELY missed in this day & age! She bravely face crippling arthritis late in her life...continuing to work on behalf on the less fortunate despite her pain. If only we had MORE souls like her in this world....

  • C L A S S Class is how you spell a LADY in your presence......god love you and rest in peace Mrs Brisson

  • @BetteDavisMimic

    Oh great comment, darling!

  • Auntie Mame rules!

  • I love her. She was really a great actress. Both a artist and great humanatrin. Best movie Auntie Mame. And His Girl Friday!

  • Roz rocked. So did Frankie.

  • Roz Russell = C. L. A. S. S. !

  • Thank you. Miss Rosalind Russell (Brison) Hollywood Royalty.

  • A classy lady both on and off the screen. Bless her.

  • What a regal and intelligent woman. Best oscar speech ever...

  • Geeeeez....they don't make em like her anymore :)

  • pure class

  • She's a hero of mine. Always fun, always classy, always the tops!

  • Her speech brought tears to my eyes... what an Awesome lady!!

  • What a gracious speech! Perfect length, no stumbling, humble...they DEFINITELY don't make actresses like this anymore. God Bless You, Auntie Mame! RIP

  • I just love her so much

  • She was one of the best and could hold her own against any leading male actor of the 1930's, 40's 50's and 60's,,her " Sylvia Fowler " character in " The Women " shows her quick wit, biting humor and self depricationg spirit"

    Rest in Peace Roz!

  • Ah Roz! What a wonderful person, actris, human being she was. This is 2 years before her final depart. At that time she was extremely ill. She was suffering from breast cancer which she had 2 operations in 1968 then extreme level of arthritis. But what a class act!

  • she was one classy dame.

  • a fabulous actress who deserved to win an Oscar in the 1940s.

  • lol sinatra loves being up there *legends both of them i love her in the women-the one that is good! so funny and what he said so lovely classy love it *

  • Just oozing with class... the likes hollywood will never ever see again

  • It's really a pit that she never receive an Oscar by acting. She was gorgeous !

  • Frank, what the HELL has charity work got to do with acting?

  • Perhaps it has something to do with the fact she was being presented the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award!

  • they spoke so well and thoughtfully back then. now they're a bunch of dingbats.

  • Ros had a sterling, spotless character - God take special care of her soul

  • she was very good actress

  • very moving...thanks

  • now that's class!

  • ur the one and only

    Mame.

    love u roz.

  • She will always be Auntie Mame (the only, sorry Lucy) to me even though she did so much more.

  • i also never knew about her charitable work. i love and respect her even more. the women is one of my favorite movies. along with auntie mame, and the trouble with angels. happy new year, and peace to all in 2009!

  • I bought The Trouble With Angels a couple of months ago and was overwhelmed by how good she was in it and how happy and amused I was by the movie. It's a classic in my house from now on and I am always reminded of her talent every time I see her in anything. She was the real deal.

  • Do you have the Supporting Actress and Best Song categories for this Oscar year? I would love to see those clips.

  • My great mother -in- law looks like Rosiland.

  • i will remember best as Auntie Mame!

  • Yes she was Mame better than any other! Magnificent in that part! I am also very moved by the way that Frank Sinatra spoke about her ~ I had no idea she did all that charitabe work as well. Thanks to the Oscar channel too for these postings! Happy New Year to Everyone too...

  • I'm glad Loretta Young beat her for the Oscar!

  • Rosalind Russell!! i love her!! i was so upset when they remade The Women it was AWEFUL

  • I know! Even though it had a great cast, nothing could live up to the wit and cattiness of the original!

  • her comedic timing in The Women: priceless.

  • Frank was so full of shit it was coming out his ears.

  • I absolutely adore this woman as an actress, but it wasn't until I saw this I knew what an incredible human being she was.

  • i luf u

    O.o wow hehe Kt

  • BRAVA

  • That's what its all about... love you Roz! :*)

  • Rosalind Russell...Auntie Mame, a.k.a Mame Dennis Burnside, is one of the beloved literary figures of the 20th Century. She has been a gay icon ever since Patrick Denniss novel came out in 1955. We Still And Always Will Love Her!!!!

  • I love her!

  • HERE SHE IS, BOYS!!!!

  • What a wonderful woman obviously in pain had been ill for quite some time but still sweet as always smiling, and a true living legend. And I never knew that she was such a major humanitarian WOW.

  • wasn't there an appearance where she explained her cortizon shots ? and told people not to be alarmed at her swolen face

  • this is such a lovely speech, and a lovely woman!

  • Great actress, and my great Aunt. It is too bad she passes before I had a chance to meet her :( I love watching her movies though!

  • Class like this is hard to find today.

  • Goddess is the exact word!

  • My favorite actress! A Goddess!

  • One of the classiest women of all time. Auntie Mame is my all time favorite old classic.

  • God bless her.Her long suffering is over, and she's in peace now.Always in our hearts and memory.

  • i think in this time the cancer came back,

she had a long battle with cancer, the fantastic actress died to early 1976 born

1908,she was good friend from joan crawford since the film the women in 1939 from george cukor.

  • I think so. She's puffy in the face and that could be because of treatments. She seemed like a lovely lady. My mom met her in the mid 60's at her college fashion show. Roz went to the same college years earlier and would be the entertainment or commenter on the clothes being modeled from time to time. All reports were she was a lovely lady. And very slim and funny.

  • My favorite actress. Thank you Oscar!! How about KatherineHepburn's only appearance at the Oscar

  • I think Rosie Odonnell is her daughter lol!!!!

  • Thank you, OSCARS, for sharing these videos.

  • lovely, in every definition of the word.

  • Flawless as Auntie Mame and in Front Page, but horribly miscast in Gypsy.

  • She was soooo wonderful! My 3 fav actresses : Deborah Kerr, Roz Russell, Greer Garson!

  • What a class act! :)

  • frank was the right person to present it i love how she is so lovely too :):) xx

  • she's so amazing, i love her. completely deserved.

  • The Oscars should have an award for "Best Narration".

  • A lady!

  • Miss Rosalind Russell...the real deal, folks.

    What a woman.

  • My favorite movie Roz was in was Where Angels GO Trouble Follows! I love her voice!

  • That was great. She does have a wonderful speaking voice. And since she was a Catholic and went to Catholic schools, I think that helped her be totally believable as Reverend Mother.

  • such glamour in one little package. Why dont they make them like this anymore?

  • Thank you for this video!

  • My favorite was Auntie Mame. I was 15 and she was the perfect Aunt.

  • WOW... that was class... Today stars are all about "first, I wanted to thank you God. Second, I wanted to thank you my production team. Third, I wanted to thank you my fan". It is getting so generic.

  • A great actress and a wonderful woman. Such humanity in her acceptance speech.

  • The Great Roz, you gotta love her. :)

  • The Oscar's today are nothing compared to all these golden clips, thankyou for posting it!

  • Rosalind Russell was a terrific lady. Rent "Gypsy" with Natalie Wood, or "My Gal Friday" with Cary Grant, or "The Trouble with Angels" and see what true talent is -- in an expression, an eye brow lift, a look. She was the real deal. On and off camera it seems.

  • Yes she was great in GYPSY and people complained about Merman not getting the film.

  • You obviously didn't see the broadway show with Merman in it. She shook the earth and people were outraged she wasn't in the movie.

  • Did I hear that the Helen Lawson character in Valley of The Dolls was based on Ethel Merman?

  • I wouldnt have payed a cent for Merman. A free DVD rental from the library, well maybe

Some women age well as did Russell particularly on the screen! But what about the Helen Lawson basis? Theres no bus like show bus!

  • Wow...they seem like Gracious Giants compared to today's self entitled stars.

  • You really chose the right words to say. I totally agree with you. They were as you beautifully said, GRACIOUS GIANTS!

  • You nailed it. In the hi
