A fun video! Gotta love both Villazon and Florez! A couple of characters for sure. Would enjoy seeing them in a concert together with Domingo and Dudamel conducting. Sort of the elder statesman (who is still a wow-factor) and the young guys in a Latin extravaganza. Thanks for posting the video.
A lot of braying going especially from Florez - as for most tenors keep in mind Anna Russells'
observation most singers have resonance where their brains ought to be . Listen to Eggerth
at close to 90 sing about her Vienna -more beautiful than all the high C's here. It is all about artistry and her husband Kiepura had a top, a portamento and pppp these yowlers can only dream of
@dziady1 Not so, in my case, at least; I simply prefer certain voices, and, when it's a matter of that kind of choice, I leave the technical training side of things to the "experts", not having had much instruction myself. I never liked Gedda's voice either, for instance, but have to recognize that he is [was] much admired for his musicianship etc.
@Randidan I suppose it is all a matter of the sound ,and what touches us . I liked Gedda at times very much , have never warmed up to Florez sound though he has a vast
@dziady1 hehe! I had to warm up to Florez -- a "tenorino" sound doesn't usually appeal to me; he has won me over so far with his good musicianship and staying away from heavier roles that would damage what he's got now... If all that changes, so will my opinion of him...
My dad was a church musician who always said that if a note was in your range, you could sing it pp to ff .....in other words a full mezzo de voce ......in that case there would be VERY few tenors around ! possibly de Stefano, Gedda or Bjorling might Qualify ?!!
@tenorandguitar simple proof that there haven't been great numbers of singers who had good ranges! and btw, it is "messa di voce" -- what you wrote doesn't make sense...
How stupid! Rossini tenors HAVE to have an easy C ...... that is what they are famous for, after all. A mes amis is not a (technical) difficult aria if you have the C, so why do these programmes always "showcase" that aria with hihgly acclaimed Rossini tenors?? Grrrrrrr
@Randidan Quite so, but then they (or he) should NOT present it as "the Mount Everest" of arias - because it is not. This aria is ALWAYS presented as if it the most difficult aria to sing in the rep - and that is far from true. Actually it is rather a boring aria.
I'm appalled by how opera awakens such snobbery among its aficionados. No two voices are the same, and it's naive, if not downright idiotic, to expect one singer to match another perfectly in every attribute; therefore, to select one singer as the paragon by which all others will be measured is not only unfair to singers but also harmful to their craft. The beauty of music lies in its interpretation, and rejecting diverse voices thwarts the creative avenues that engender this beauty.
All featured singers here sing like shit - except for Corelli. Funny to hear Florez talk about loud high notes, His voice is so tiny. Yodeling... what pathetic shit.
Also, I'm kind of confused about my voice, because I can hit D above high C in my mix and it still sounds very chesty and full without bieng strained (any notes after that it become pure head voice). ). But What voice type would that make me?? Because my first bridge is closer to that of a baritone voice, and my speaking voice is that of a tenor.
@GetInThaKitchen hehe! It makes you extraordinary and I would love to hear you! Don't worry about classifications, just learn to sing properly -- the rest will sort itself out soon enough!
Is a tenor able to high high c in pure chest voice or is it mixed voice?? I'm guessing mix because I don't think anyone can really hit high c in proper chest voice without yelling it out.
@GetInThaKitchen I think by high notes you have to have a big support of breath and beside it you should use more your "head". A little bit. the body, chest also important, very important.... But if you ise only your chest, you cant sing high notes....
@bpetii1 Of course it is a mixed voice... and difficult to explain it... but I think.. Your throat have to be "deeper" (not, too) and you have to use more head-rezonancie, and your body ..
Villazón ´s low register between little C and C1 sounds akward and kermited not resonant and lyric as I think it should by nature and that tendency to try to muffle with his voice to make it darker then it is, is what I think has caused him problems, the quality of his voice is otherwise great!

Big difference between Corelli's Cs and Florez`c. I would hope that ugly nasal goat tenor Florez would have a C. Put on Filippeschi or Lauri Volpi if you want man sized high Cs..
@tenorotti I have a better idea Monsieur "tenorotti" since you are such a big critic of Florez why don't you post a video of yourself singing an impressive high C rather than pass the buck onto tenors who lived and died almost a century ago? Easy to criticize but not so easy to do!
@Chanteuredelopera So praising without being able to intelligently compare to other singers is okay, but to criticize while being able to intelligently compare to other singers is not? You need to learn more about reality. The fact is that there people are out there singing now and making opera seem emasculate and alienating the young in the process. Without honest commentary this art gets worse and worse. It is a lot of inbred lying right now. Criticism is important.
@Chanteuredelopera That a question of taste, don't you think Monsieur ! I have the right not to like the voice of a singer, and I agree with tenorotti for the nasal tone, but not for the ugly voice! The tone of a voice has nothing to see with technique. And you Mr le Professeur, how do you sing ?
@tenorotti IF you are truly a SINGER, you should be not so ignorant in stating that Florez has a nasal sound. He is simply a Leggiero which you should know is a tenor who possesses a very light and agile instrument. His speaking voice can be mistaken for a woman. If you prefer tenors with a deeper or more "masculine" sound then that's your right. I would wager no matter how hard you tried singing in the nose, you still could not produce such a clear and effortless high C.
@mannyekin darum sind ihre c und cis falsch! weil sie alle singen ohne equaliser, also ohne resonatoren!darum machen sie eine Art von sport! wie Russen es sagen...die sind sportsisten der olimpiesche reserve!
@mannyekin i dont particularly agree with florez' igh voice sounds... ie g thru bflat but my goodness there is no denying he is flat out AMAZING. truly gifted.
very good video, but i don't think that the high notes are that important if you think about it the greatest composers like Verdi, Wagner, etc, did not give that importance to the high notes
The obsession of high notes comes from the audience and in such a competitive world the performer has no choice but to obey the demands of the public (or someone else will).
Agreed. A beautiful high note is always thrilling and exciting, but I'd rather listen to a marvelous singer with an even and consistent, free voice than someone with great high notes but nothing else (Mr. Monaco).
is that corelli at 00:50 ?

If the high C made a great tenor, Domingo would not be such. A tenor is QUITE more than a high C. Ridicoulos statement .
