Since J. was world champ the night before the fight and his first defense was against Floyd, who knocked him out in 5, this must have been '60. I'm surprised that Cerf seemed to pronounce the initial J when he addressed the champ. Floyd of course would have a far greater challenge against a man named Sonny.
Rather shocking that he did the show the night before the fight. Ingemar got koed by Patterson in the 5th, one of the most horrifying in boxing history. I've seen it a couple of times, but won't watch it again. It even scared Patterson. Oddly, Patterson really liked Ingemar and they remained very good friends for life. Patterson used to fly to Europe each year to visit him.
It always makes me uncomfortable to watch old clips of people cheering on Ingemar Johansson and betting that he'd win the fight, because I suspect alot of people at that time wanted the white guy to win even if he was a foreigner.
One would think that when a mystery challenger is a participant in an upcoming heavyweight title fight the other fellow in the ring might be mentioned.
This illustrates boxing's popularity: they didn't put an explanatory title along with his name.
Gil Fates discussed this sequence in his book about What's My Line titled "What's My Line?" He remembered Eammon Andrews, BBC WML host / BBC Sports reporter, asking Ingo "Why aren't you home in bed?" Instead, this clip shows Arlene asking the question. Fates reported Ingo saying his first WML appearance brought him luck before winning the championship. He might have said that backstage.
This guy surely had to beat the women off with a stick. Lucky guy.

There is one WML-episode with miss Birgit Lundgren, Ingemar's fiancee and later second wife. Search for "Correspondent for Swedish Newspaper".

I think the most noteworthy part of this clip is that Floyd Patterson's name isn't even mentioned by anyone.

This must be from June 19, 1960. Johansson was knocked out in five rounds by Floyd Patterson the next night and lost his title.
