  • Chaplin in New Shoes was in fact aso the Theme music on Charlie Chaplins show ???? Was it Not? Does anyone know? Have ya been around that long?

  • @padenmtjr thnx for the reply, I was just a kid when Chet became in influence in my playing, he was so clean I thought there was no way he would "stoop to using a capo"...remember I was a kid here. Story: Joe Walsh thought George Harrison did And Your Bird Can Sing in one take without overdubs! Took 6 months to learn the double stops, then George told him he didn't record it that way....same thing here I guess.

  • Thanks for the info he sure was a great picker

  • so amazing

  • Another Jerry Reed tune played so greatly buy Chet he was a superb picker

  • @chester777ful That's a Boudleaux Bryant tune not Jerry Reed, but it's still brilliant

  • Still the greatest!

  • I would never use a capo thinking that Chet never did....until I saw him play live. It was always with me, What Would Chet Do?

  • @steveyraynelson Chet was all about the sound and perfection. He used a capo once and a while on certain songs to get it to sound a certain way. pitch to be correct to blend with the way he wanted. Not to make it easy

  • He is Mr Guitar..... **********

  • oh GOD... BEATIFUL... MOON OF CREAM...

    WINDS OF HONEY...

    TREES OF SUGAR...

    GRACIAS!

  • mr. guitar!

    R.I.P.

  • Notice that at the start of this piece he is playing with a capo to make it easier for his own solo...then takes it off and finishes playing open strings and positions when the band takes over...he is so good!

  • @sboyd97223

Actually, it wasn't to "make his playing easier; he started out in the key of F and ended up in C...but he WAS the best!

  • A quote from "Chet Atkins: Me and my guitars":

Years from now, after I'm gone, someone will listen to what I've done and know I was here. They may not know or care who I was, but they'll hear my guitars speaking for me, and maybe they'll understand something. That's the way it's supposed to be. The players come and go, but the music lives on, and eternity will take care of the rest."

  • Actually, Gibson doesnt own Gretsch, but Fender has a distribution agreement with Gretsch to market their guitars and manufacture them. Gretsch still owns Gretsch. As for the tune, its called Chaplin in new Shoes, Not Charlie Chaplin in new shoes.

  • Im sorry for the question but does the song title refer to charlie chaplins famous character the tramp and his overly large grungy shoes...if so that is just awesome and Chet was one of the greatest of all time.

  • geesh doesnt any one know anything Gibson bought out Gretch Gibson now makes Gretch if you have a true Gretch its worth a mint I have an origional country gentleman and no its not for sale

  • Doesn't fender own Gretsch now?

  • it sounds like chet is really telling a story with this song.

i believe chet atkins IS an artist who not only knew how to speak with his instrument, but was truly dependent on his guitar to communicate.

  • This is the best comment I've seen concerning Chet Atkins. It fits very well with numerous quotes from Chet concerning his emotional bond with the guitar.

    Well done-nicely written!!

  • Hey, thanks for corresponding with my comment. I think it's great when people use youtube for that.

Chet Atkins' music has really impacted me. And as you quoted, it will live on for people to learn from and discuss.

  • Your quite welcome. Great words deserve recognition.I'm not sure where youtube was when Chet passed away, but I'll bet he'd be very happy with all the attention his video's get. You made a great comment!!

  • I remember when Chet was first hospitalized with cancer...long ago. He had a guitar near his bed so he could still run his fingers over the fret-board...he didn't want to lose the feel or the connection. just an incredible man.

  • when your guitar becomes a part of your soul, it must be hard to part, worse then death being away from your soul, i find it hard to part from my guitar i couldnt imagine the pain he must of went threw

  • have you noticed that chet atkins looks alittle like george bush?:P

  • Me and Chet Atkins got into a fight a few years ago over this particular sandwich, and I'm proud to say that ol' boy whooped my ass.

  • yeah, it is a gibson. I don't know why i said gretsch. haha

  • It's easy to confuse if you don't know the details of his endorsement deals. His favorite electric guitar was his '59 Gretsch 6122 single cut Country Gentleman. When Gretsch quality slid he went to Gibson and they made a similar Country Gentleman. Now Gibson has discontinued the Chet Atkins line and his name is back at Gretsch. The new CGs are of impeccable quality and made to replicate his '59 CG with all the mods he made over the years. It's the best axe out there for electric fingerpickin'.

  • Chet was loyal to his friends and Mr. Gretch, but he still loved the old Gibsons. When Gretch started using inferior materials in the mid 60's, Chet had no option but to part with Gretch.

  • To:tyoonz-I think I know which TV show you saw. It was a special featuring Jerry Reed, Charlie Pride,& Chet. I found a 33RPM record of that very show just a few weeks later, & still have it. This was in the mid-70's, when real country music was being aired on TV,not lame,half-baked,so called videos. Johnny Cash had the real videos on his show, while he sang, "Come along and ride this train."

  • To exmotorcop:

I can't recall much about the show, but your description sounds as though it very well could be the same one. I do recall that he was dressed "up," i.e., not casually, and he had an electronic keyboard behind him, giving a sort of celesta-type sound to the arrangement.

  • It's clearly a Gibson--I own one.

  • I can't say how much I appreciate your posting this! I've been trying to find out the name of this tune for over 30 years!! I heard him play it on a TV show when I was MUCH younger. Loved it, but had no idea as to what it was called. Bless you!

  • Very very very nice!

Did i say it was very nice?

  • ya great stuff if only i can do that

  • Stephen King hosting????

  • Garrison Keillor is the host. The show is "A Praire Home Companion" on public radio.

  • that's not a gibson, that's a Gretsch...he's famous for his Gretsch's

  • I believe donnyoh is correct about the Gibson. Chet played Gibson's mainly in his later years.

  • Yeah, that's the Gibson. You can see from the "flower" on the headstock. Plus the logo on the Gibsons looked different than the more squared off Gretsch ones...

  • Love the Gibson...He was the very best!

  • he had the..the touch..the touch..

  • Another classic by the Master!
