  • Ahhhhhh! What awesome tone you have, Mr. Paul.

  • tears are running down my face......

  • True Genius is supplanted by hype much too often. Only those with the REAL knowledge of the subject matter understand the difference..... e.g. Bill Gates is a multi-billionaire and celebrated..... while Thompson and Ritchie are all but forgotten to history..... truly sad....

  • Rip mr. Paul. Your amazing heritage will live on in every guitar players fingers

  • STEP 1) break out a les paul,

    STEP 2) grab a pick

you're playing guitar with les paul.

    (note: step 2 is optional.)

  • now if only we had him doing versions of other Broadway tunes. maybe I would like those too. until I heard this, I only sorta liked "over the rainbow". Now I LOVE it. what magic. No vocalist needed.

  • @MrSteveParr perhaps i should clarify that i dislike obamas administration even more. i just used bush as an example because the landslide victory he had in 2004 but that definitely doesn't mean that i like all the garbage that obama has been doing. they were both bad presidents, just on the opposite sides of the spectrum.

  • The thing I admire most is the way that Les treated his fingers like people and used all of them to his potential in even the most simple chord changes.

  • If the guitar was a man, it was Les Paul.

  • Oh, wow, that is grand. God, just listen to that; I love what happened at 1:29 and again at 1:40; I think it is the guy on the far right. They are all tremendously talented and, obviously, it takes all three to make this sound great. It is just the sounds coming out of the guy on the far right REALLY appeal to me. They are a super group - I am not taking anything from the talent of the other two guys they are great also. Just something about "far right" guy that blow me away. Super post.

  • @0917gva The guy on the far right is Luo Pallo, Les' rhythm guitarist for, well, forever. When I used to see the trio at the Iridium, it was always Lou that I ended up watching. He is just superb - he provided the most solid, understated foundation to the music. Like a rock, man, like a rock.

  • Whoever disliked this is a douche.

  • Happy Birthday Les :)

  • Happy birthday Les. We hope you're watching us from "somewhere over the rainbow."

  • Not only a great guitarist, but also a great radio engineer, he invented a lot of modern sound recording techniques. Glorious life.

  • Thank You God

  • too bad his tone is weak......

    KIDDING !!!!

  • @911fever hahahaha you were about to be jumped by about 40,000 people for that one

  • Les and Django were twins seperated at birth............

  • I can not believe there is a dislike for this video

  • Fuck Van Halen, fuck Malmstein, fuck Vai, fuck everyone. Greatest shred guitarist ever??? Les Paul.

  • What does he say to the bass player around 2:40 ???

  • You gotta love the sly grin Les has at the end of the song. He knows he is the "Babe Ruth" of the guitar world, and he just hit another game winning, walk off grand slam.

  • Nekaj lagano i lijepo od legende Les Paula.

  • Remember, Les is nearly 80 here. Obviously not what he would do at a much younger age, but still brilliant, nonetheless. Great inventor, great artist, great innovator. Living legend? Oh, yeah.

  • Les Paul LOVED his guitar and his guitar LOVED Les paul

  • He makes it look so easy, it has that signature sound, so good.

  • so this is Les Paul.. my first time to hear his piece.. wow.. so wonder my his name resounds till today :)

  • Is that Lou on the left?

  • I hope there's a repeat button in youtube

  • TABS????

  • Man i feel soory for that poor out cast that gave this video its only dislike,

  • electric :)

  • i wonder how the "ONE" dislike feels..

  • Les Paul is simply the masters master. He was inducted into 4 Halls of Fame. The guitar that he envisioned has made rock music what it is today. His multi-track recording invention paved the way for all music since that time. May he forever be remembered and most of all listened to. Rest in Peace and keep on playing.

  • Les Paul, Charley Christian, Django Reinhardt, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Chet Atkins. Can you imagine the guitar jams in where ever they are.

  • Rest In Peace..in remembrance fabulous Les Paul..

  • R.I.P Les Paul

  • The bass player almost looks like Dicky Smothers.

  • @mnestrt It just may be.

  • 2:40 :D lol

  • he must have played every note that could possibly have been played while still staying in the right key!

  • @dugganater "he must have played every note that could possibly have been played while still staying in the right key!"

hahah that's as easy as eating a piece of pie if you use a chromatic scale

either way, this is amazing though.

  • 2:51-3:10 pure lespaulgarm

  • This is just incredible. The tone Les has going--the bass playing. Les riffs off some great phrasing.

I am so grateful to have had an opportunity to see Les Paul once, one of his weekly Monday night shows in NYC. What a legend.

  • @walstib77 You were very fortunate to have seen Les perform. What an experience. I would have loved to have been able to.

  • Only one guy dislike this vid? Im sure he missed the button , or he may be deaf ~

  • love the lights shining on them: sepia just the ultimate lighting scheme for a trio haha

  • I cannot find this tab anywhere Anyone know where I can find it, its really bugging me I want to learn it this way so bad.

  • @vatheron

Learn it by ear. I learnt most of the intro and first part of the solo by ear, the scale he's using is the be bop scale, I forget which key, but I hope that helps.

  • When Michael Jackson died the whole worlds went ape squeeze but when Lester Paulfus died it was a mere footnote on the nightly news. How sad is that?

  • @MrSteveParr I agree with you. Les Paul's not only a musician, but an inventor, a genius who made the rock n' roll sound possible. He should have deserved much more attention in my opinion...

  • @MrSteveParr Admiration by the majority has never been necessary to talent. Just look at how popular Taylor Swift is. George Bush won by the biggest landslide in political history, but that certainly doesn't make him our best president by any means. I'd just assume the typical idiots of the world have no idea who Les Paul is, that way when I die and meet him in the afterlife there will be a much shorter line to wait in. ;)

  • @PilotDoofy Same could be said about Obama. People saw something flashy and new and just had to have it. Thanks to them we are now much worse off than before.

  • @PilotDoofy Telling the Supreme Court that he holds the right to remove books from store and library shelves, he told the Supreme Court that Americans do not have the right to privacy of location, spent more money than and added more to our debt than all presidents from Washington through Reagan, he said Obamacare would save us money and now the CBO says it will not, he told me that I have to purchase health insurance (a violation of the Constitution),

  • @PilotDoofy He lies every time he states that the wealthy don’t “pay their fair share” because the top 49% of wage earners pay 100% of all income taxes and the top 5% pay 95% of all income taxes, we have more people relying on government handouts than ever before, he rescinded an executive order that band U.S. tax money from providing abortions to women in other countries, he has told Boeing that they can not open a new plant in South Carolina and hire 1000 people,

  • @PilotDoofy He has barred non-union construction companies from bidding on federal projects driving up the cost of these projects and in many cases having to import union labor from other states denying workers in the state where the project is taking place from jobs they should by all rights have first shot at, started his political carrier in the living room of two domestic terrorists (Ayers and Dohrn), he claimed Obamacare wouldn’t drive up the cost of healthcare but it has,

  • @PilotDoofy Only 7% of his administration have any private sector experience, he has committed troops to war without congressional approval (a violation of our Constitution), openly associated with communists while in college, his first green jobs czar was an admitted communist, bowed to the Saudi King, spent $800 billion on a stimulus plan that created 450,000 government jobs and killed 1,000,000 private jobs, gives preferential treatment to companies that donated to his campaign,

  • @PilotDoofy his policy czar (Cass Sunstine) believes that private property rights cause homelessness, Ordered the Department of Justice to drop a voter intimidation case against the Black Panthers, ordered the Department of Justice not to defend laws he disagrees with (defense of marriage act), printing money as fast as he can, issued a moratorium on offshore drilling killing tens of thousands of jobs, played a SHIT LOAD of golf, done nothing about our border with mexico, need I go on?

  • @PilotDoofy He even committed an act of war against Mexico by supplying the cartels with guns. The man had never run anything in his life and fools put him in the White House. There have been many good presidents but Obama wouldn’t make the top 40. He has been so bad its easier to list what he has done right. Not close GITMO, Kanye West is a jackass, shoot muslim pirates in the head and shoot Osama in the head. 4... 4 damn things he got right.

  • One of the greatest guitar players ever. !!! R. I .P

  • nice ! ですね.

  • I just from heard from Les. He said Ted Greene is giving him lessons on chord chemistry. Ted and Les and waiting for Chet to form the ultimate trio.

  • One of the finest gentleman to ever grace our planet.. Thank you God .. really, how many people have contributed so much joy to humility directly and indirectly as Mr Paul has? ie. invented the electric guitar, and multi-track recording, the LesPaul + gave us his music !! Thank you sir !

  • one dislike...what a shame

Justin Beiber must have missed the like button

  • great version . ididn t know he played with Dicky Smothers too.

  • absolutely beautiful!

  • I think the version he does of this @ 93 has more charm.

  • Everyone should just go ahead and kill that ONE stupid ass who rated this video down!

  • @qwecars I think they "missed" clicking thumbs up ;)

  • @ChooksRock haha deadly mistake! lol

  • nice music

    thanx very much

  • i miss him, and i never even met him.

  • legend

  • thanks for design les paul guitar

u very best love u guy

  • "JamesTKurtCobain" sounds like an ignorant peasant; Les Paul was a guitar master, unlike you or anyone you rate as great. What's up your ass, Kurt Cobain's cock?!

  • @JamesTKirkCobain I hope you're a troll. This man is the reason Batio has a recording career and is also the man who helped design the guitar that is named after him.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain A man of Les Paul's stature doesn't need to tap or shred the guitar. Being from his hometown I know that great music doesn't always involve tapping or shredding. Play from the heart like Les and that's all you need.

    R.I.P. Les Paul

  • @JamesTKirkCobain dumb ass the guitar was designed by him he wast named after it also the man resposable for multitrack recording studios....this man has played with greats, and influenced the best...without him music would e nowhere today

  • @JamesTKirkCobain You'r Retarded/ This guy Les Paul, Made the Les Paul. Wow.. and i'm Pretty sure hes greater than you'll Ever be. Up You'rs.

  • @JamesTKirkCobain

    dude....yer so kidding right?....

and by the way, Leo Fender already named himself after the Fender Strat, so too late for you.

  • heavenly and dreamy

  • i want to see him. im too late

  • the macho buttons hard to push on this one. The guy was a guitar player till he died. He lived long, but seeing this shit will get me teary.

  • not my kind of my music

  • BEAUTIFUL !

  • It's great to hear and see Les here when he was a hale and hearty 76. It is also fun to see the rest of the trio (at that time) looking a lot younger. Lou Pallo (Rhythm Guitar) was with Les to his last days and Gary Mazzaroppi (Bass) played with Les off and on, and many other folks like Marian McPartland. These days he plays with Les' former sideman Frank Vignola, and Vinny Raniolo. Recently they have been touring with Tommy Emmanuel. Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Les smiles...

  • a true king among men if there is a heaven i hope your up there playing les

  • Loved the video and Les Too. Thanks for posting. c]:-)

  • amazing Les. You will be missed.

  • Raw perfection. Love his smile at :22.

  • wow great you good les paul

  • this is the essence of solid body guitar playing!

  • At 2:20 he looks up and you can feel him connecting to Judy at that moment..

  • beautiful... thanks les, every old school guitarist owes you a lot

  • not every old schooler, EVERYONE on this whole planet, for example he influenced the likes of jimi hendrix, jimmy page, jeff beck and so on.

  • Thanks for everything. Guitar Legend: Les Paul. RIP We will miss you. :(

  • Great stuff. I remember seeing this on HBO..Great show. Les will be missed.

  • fantastic im quite suprised about how much he has influenced modern musicians and remained relatively unknown

  • Sweet....... What else can you say?

  • now that's what everybody's talking about...

the arthritis hadn't diminished his playing in any appreciable way yet. altho' i loved les right up til the end, it's easier to see what the deal was in these earlier videos... no overdubs & no sped up parts here, just the purest technique & feel.

RIP to one of the all time greats !

  • Pure Genius...R.I.P.A true gentle soul,GOD BLESS YOU LES.

  • rip

  • Bless his soul, the man had style!

Rest easy, Maestro. We'll not see your like again.

  • nobody could play it like you, les. now i'm sure you're playing it for the angels...RIP

  • RIP Patron saint of all things guitar!

  • I'm still emotional about his passing. Yeah, he was 94 - but I wanted him to live forever and always be there on monday nights. I too shook my head at all the coverage of that 50 year old who did the moonwalk... this is the guy we'd all be holding candles in the streets for days for... in my alternate reality. Thank you Les. Thank you for melody. Thank you for sound. Thank you for a life dedicated to the purest joy there is: playing the guitar with people you love.

  • sad to see this now, but cool

  • fuck off michael jackson, he is the real dead legend...1.000.000 stars

  • + a gazillion

  • yeah!

  • legend, we'll miss you

  • RIP the greatest man that ever lived

  • Rest in Peace,

    you gave us so much

    I will always remember

  • man what a legend, the moment i heard he died i pickt up my gibson les pauls and played a 3hour solo in his honor

    RIP

  • so, what was there over the rainbow?

  • 3:34 - N B C !

And yes, before all the theory geeks get on me and try to start explaining major 6ths or 2nd inversion triads - don't. It'll make you look foolish!

  • @theRealIonian Ah a musician I see... GREAT...We're all looking at who made so much of this possible. My old boss, (RIP) Delaney Bramlett, knew Les well.

    They're together now... R.I.P.

  • I had the honor of metting Les Paul twice. I will never forget what an amazing, funny, and joyful man he was. Sharp as a tack until the end too. Rest in Peace Les Paul, you are missed.

  • Donde estés, un fuerte abrazo querido Les Paul, Dios te bendiga y gracias por todo lo que nos has dado...

  • What a legend.

    Rest in Peace.

  • RIP

  • perfect as always RIP Great and Wonderful Man

  • An extraordinary man, Les Paul. It's hard to fathom what a huge impact he had on every aspect of music as we know it! One of a kind ...

    May he rest in peace!

  • Thank you for making life better.RIP

  • RIP

  • R.I.P, Les. You were truly one of the greats.

  • @Heatmi5er yeah man....He was...the most perfectly man on eeearth! He was a genius he wanst Silly..you know?...like...aah

I went bad when I recieved this news ooh man I almost cry listening this...aah

  • @753nano almost cry? I actually shed a small tear.....

  • I found out it is Lou Pallo.

  • Who is on backing guitar? How does he get that acoustic sound? Parallel wiring?

  • thanks a million for the Les Paul guitar, sir-

  • great! who are the other players?

  • When Les Paul plays a les paul, what les paul does Les Paul play?

  • He sometimes plays very rare late-sixties Les Paul Professional and Les Paul Recording models, but most of the time his guitars were build specially for him.

  • Hi there

this was an old comment, but Les just passed away, and I thought I would tell you he used to play a Les Paul Recording model guitar. It was equipped with special low impedance pickups, and some cool electronic controls. RIP Les!

  • Omfg, i just read about it now. That really sucks, he must have been the biggest icon in guitar building history...

  • Yeah, the biggest icon, for sure, and one cool dude as well. I think it was Keith Richards who said if it wasn't for Les Paul, generations of punks like him would be in jail or cleaning toilets. Think of THAT!

Thank you, Les Paul, for everything!

  • I feel like I am floating

  • Les Paul is a true legend, guitar godfather.

  • im 22, and this is REAL music..not that auto tune shit...I need to find this and his other stuff on a cd somewhere..like asap!!

  • It's not hard to find online. in stores you wont find much outside of a couple greatest hits collections, but on amazon you can find anything.

and usually for very cheap as well, if you dont mind buying used!

I have so many Les Paul recordings, and I love them all.

  • Nicely said man. Les Paul is the most gifted guitarist on the planet. My mission in life is to see him play.

  • The "new sound" still sounds great to me.

    An American treasure.

  • Totally awsome

  • the man who started it all...

"Now thats where I heard feedback first from Les Paul. Also vibratos and things. Even before B.B. King, you know, Ive traced a hell of a lot of rock and roll, little riffs and things, back to Les Paul. I mean hes the father of it all: multi-tracking and everything else. If it hadnt been for him, there wouldnt have been anything really."

    Jimmy Page 1977

  • Lou always reminds me of a cross between Chris Noth and Jerry Ourbach (or however it's spelled)

  • Sublime.

Wonder when he played this with Judy Garland. Would have loved to have be able to hear that.

  • tell me why this thing only has 724 views. thats ridiculous, this is awesome.

  • I can't tell you why, but one thing I can say is whoever misses this clip will be left with a missing link in the electric guitar story board.

  • Les Paul plays this just about every performance....I think it was a favorite of his late mother....or at least that's what I have heard.

  • true that

  • The Master himself..
