If people would stop buying diamonds, many African countries would practically starve to death. Realize that sometimes diamonds maybe the only resource they have, and for perhaps millions, the only work they can have (I'm talking about miners, but there are thousands of Africans working in offices within the trade, and those people would of course also lose their jobs as well). That was in Somolia and they had very real weapons. A small group of American Special Forces on a mission were knocked off track when rebels shot down one of their helicopters. That allowed thousands of rebels with Ak-47s, RPGs and 50 cal machine guns mounted on jeeps to surround and attack them. Somolia is poor but like other poor countries their rebels are supplied arms from various sources including different Islamic groups like Al-Qaeda and governments from neighboring States.
