@KrazzyKripples i think it's 'cause they want to achieve the hypnotic effect and have you drawn in and absorbed as much as possible, shattering your brain cells with this bludgeoning beat to the point where you actually start enjoying it and develop a craving for more. at least that's what always makes me come back for me.
Simplicity is more effective than anything else, not to mention that simple ideas executed well are more likely to influence people than a wash of complicated shit.
got to try anyways! For an interest check out from my videos our band Dali and its song Woods. Its an old live demo made in rush for an interview we had. Just when we got things rolling our band member had to go to army and everyone had stuff going here and there. even though the quality it gives a hint of the bands hard and somewhat simple sound. now were among the living again and will soon blow the hell off the earth
Pelican....kinda like Isis sans vocals with less inventive guitar lines and WAY too much repetition to be considered creative. You can crucity me now.
@redshaftedflicker i'm not trying to start an arguement with you..but why pick their most repetitive song to make this claim on?
EVERYONE who knows pelican knows that this song is nothing but repetition of that one heavy riff. (why we like it)
like @darkstrangely said...other albums such as Australasia don't follow this same pattern..this album was clearly meant to be repetitive. I would even say that looking at the band as a whole, the albums they've put out..they cover a wide range of sounds.
@redshaftedflicker To be honest the lack of vocals is one very large reason why I like Pelican (and why I like them much more than Isis). As much as Isis have great musical elements (noone would question that), the vocals actually really irritate me and distract from the brilliance of Aaron Turner's guitar work IMO.
I just recently saw a rad band live called ATOMIS. They dont sound like pelican, but they state them as one of their biggest influences. I believe in sharing great music I find with others! :) If you like Pelican you might dig them .Check out: atomis.bandcamp. com It's their first free download. I actually hadn't heard of Pelican until I checked them out after seeing Atomis. Hope you enjoy, I think they are going to do well!
When i saw Pelican live, it was soooo disappointing. The club was so small and the fucking sound engineer decided that everybody needed to be deaf and not hear anything clearly at all. Im pretty sure he wasn't using a SPL meter. I usually pack earplugs JIC, but forgot this night..
From what I could actaully HEAR, they were great.
And it wasn't just Pelican that the sound engineer fucked up, it was the opening bands too. same problem.
Seriously, make music, love, art. Art is expression, this just shows it. It's art, it's music, not platic material. Love music, love what you do, don't sell yourself. Pelican is magnificent. It is expression through music, art. It rocks :). This is the real music. Let it be heard, appreciated, felt.
@TomMark182 i think what makes this song so great is the rhythm, the fact it's in B tuning(low/heavy), the switching between a full low-b power chord and an octave chord, and the drums.
The drums play a pretty big part in giving it that heavy sound. Listen to the change from the 1:10 riff to the 1:45 riff
