goddam, i simply dont understand how u get to be as good as gary novak, does anyone here those fills hes playing starting at 4:54, no one can play that shit...fuck mebs not even vinnie...mebs buddy rich..hah
i agree chad is one of my all time favs, but novak seems to float through alan's solos and create more of the vibe alan is working towards, in these shows anyway. more space or something. dont get me wrong i love it all. the conclusion is fuckin awesome!!
@paisteguy799 I'm not a drummer so I might as well be spouting bullshit haha. Yeah Novak rules, it's just a matter of preference I guess. (but seriously check out Tony as well)
Novak gives it a more elastic feel even though he's right in there - I think he relates more to Holdsworth as he solos. Nothing against the other drummers, though....
Nice to hear Novak instead of Wackerman. I just like him better with Holdsworth. CW is a great drummer, I just like Novak better in this situation. Sounds more jazz w/ him, maybe.
Vinnie plays every song on Secrets (1989) except for Peril Premonition, and plays Against the Clock (which has the most insane drum solo) from Wardenclyffee Tower.
@DBP92 I saw Holdsworth at a show w Vinnie, JJ bass, and Steve Hunt-keys in 1988. They did Non-brewed condiment, Vinnie opened with a free open form solo and then cued the band as G Husband does on the record. Vinnie's solo was super intense and so was the interplay in Devil T Hindmost. They also did the tune Maid Marion and Vinnie was twisting it every which way as a multidimensional experiment.
This tune is truly beautiful; especially on the original (the cd version), the solo was magical and the tune itself was so lyrical I could almost hand my own lyrics on it. This version is cool, too, but I like the original a little better.

Beautiful song with an extraordinary guitar solo. There's a little mistake while he plays those bone crushing chords (00:20), and he laughs about it (00:31). That's actual proof there's no playback ;-))
don t focus on technic, allan is an artist and he has worked to develop his OWN technic to play his OWN music and fortunately it is much more than speed....
Looks like Gary Novak on drums. Sure sounds like him too! There aren't too many drummers that can play like that, and there aren't too many drummers that can play with, and keep up with Allan. Great Musicianship!!!
Yeah..so true. That's a main difference between Holdsworth and Metheny. Sometimes Allan's solos start to sound a bit too "all-over-the-place". But most of the time it is pure genious.

right after 3:17...the descending bassline....omfg that is unreal fluidity from Dave Carpenter...

solo section at 1:44.....taste, feel, notes, everything...wow

@devincat
People say Holdsworth was the original Paul McCartney before Paul "died".
This went around for a while among all the other versions.
I guess Allan does have the haircut down lol.

Dave Carpenter was a monster player. He comps the keyboard part while playing bass line under neath.
For a truly shocking performance all the way around the Warsaw performance is mind blowing. As good as this one is, Warsaw is IT.

really, allan holdsworth TRIO LIVE? who is playing the very prominent keyboard part while allan is ripping up his solo?
jamesha175 1 year ago
@jamesha175 What you took for a very prominent keyboard part actually comes from the bass player ;)

@Samsgarden And then you have Tony Williams who played on the original recording, who is both dynamic and loud ;)

@boertush wait...that makes no sense at all....dynamic and loud? anyway novak fucking rules

I could swear I hear rhoads piano in there. Is that the bassist?

yup, it's Dave Carpenter playing chords on the bass to support the solo. RIP

On a six string bass you have the C string which give you higher voicings for chords while you play the lower bass line.
