@ReinhardvonHolst i always thought it was too, but Robert has said multiple times that it is about drug addiction-- which, I guess you could say, in the mind of an addict, the drug is god.
@ReinhardvonHolst it's excactly that reason that the Cure are so amazing-- many people can hear the same song and have it mean totally different things to each.
does anyone else the the big hand or H could be refering to heroin? heroin is sometimes refered to as H or any word that starts with H. robert talks about the big H making all your favorite things go away. and the most important thing is the big hand. it might be refering to time, but i think it's something more sinister than time. time will take away your dreams but with time you don't have a choice, you can't stop it. when he sings about the big hand it souns more like something that is chosen
I heard this song for the first time about week ago and it immediately grabbed me. It's a beautifully sad song. I downloaded it. You can't deny it's worth keeping. It made me think of many things including the people of Japan who passed away in the Earthquake/Tsunami. May God bless the families. Be good to each other people.
@Quietus5- I also have loved this song from the first time I heard it. I had a friend who somehow Pirated it when it played HBO for the first time. I only have a VHS copy and I treasure it, praying it doesn't break. I have the box set and was hoping to find it there. I'm not computer savvy and only able to comment. I haven't quite figured out downloading. I do have help. It comes in the form of a 17 year old who has a life of his own and not so much respect for great music.

There is nothing more magical or beautiful as this song and the exceptional feel it gives to your heart and soul!! There is no one like The Cure, no one!! I do so love The Cure!! ♥♥♥
Oh how I love this song!! It is one beautifully magnificent song!! So very touching!! LOVE THIS BAND!! LOVE ROBERT!! He is such a love!!! The Cure are truly amazing and so very awesome!! Always loved them, always will!! The Cure forever and always!! :) ♥
This song is just so hauntingly beautiful and so mesmerizing to your heart and soul!! It touches on all my emotions!! The Cure has a way with that!! I have loved them for nearly 30 years and they have never ceased to amaze me with all the beauty and magic in their songs and melodies. The Cure are a truly phenomenal band of all time!! Robert is absolutely amazing in all aspects. He is a true poetic genius. His lyrics just dig right into your soul. Brilliant!! The Cure forever my friends!! ♥♥
Great song. Amazing to think it was only ever a B-side and fantastic to see this in its embryonic state being road tested.
I've just featured this video in my blog 'B-Side Ourselves' (link via the URL on my channel). B-sides aren’t simply throwaway songs not good enough for albums… they can provide us with an alternative version of our favourite bands and artists.
The fact that song has become a staple of Cure live shows is proof if ever proof was needed...!
They were so big at that time - it was 2 years after Prayer Tour, just before the success of Wish. And finding them playing this little gig at the club must have been a magical experience. I believe it was one of their best performances ever, at least out of those that were filmed. Robert so focused, yet so happy (0:55). You have to love them.
ya that ultracure guitar sounds nothing like a VI. I hope he goes back to the fender VI soon.. I still wonder why this song never made the cut on wish..
Ohhh i really miss the Fender Bass VI sound on The Cure, it sounds perfect, now in days they does not sound like these days couse Ultracure guitar used by Robert Smith on Stage.
I LOVE THE CURE ITS MUSIC THE MUSIC THE FUCKING MUSIC THERES NOTHING LIKE IT AND THERE WILL never be another One like ROBERT SMITH Aries,,good music for THE LONELIEST GUY OR THE HAPPIEST GUY
This was off "The Cure Play Out" wasn't it? I had it, just can't remember the name anymore. This was probably my favorite of all the Cure b-sides and this version is still a work in progress!
My Favorite 10!!!( this is difficult) 1- Charlotte Sometimes 2- Figurehead 3- Letter to Elise 4- The Blood 5- Lament 6- Last Dance 7- Fascination Street 8- M 9- Funeral Party 10- Shiver and Shake mmm i could do lika a top 50 songs easy....
this should have been on the album (Wish), not left on the b-side of whatever single it was (High I think). It was not only worthy of being on the album, but far better than many tracks on Wish (particulalry the exceptionally crap Wendy Time). Fact that they have started re-introducing it to their live sets shows it is probably in their top 30 songs - I'd put it in top 10.
I too have a fondness for this song that goes very deep. ... a top ten Cure track list. Wow, that'd be tough to do. 01. The Kiss 02. Disintegration 03. Faith 04. Sinking 05. A Thousand Hours 06. A Forest 07. The Figurehead 08. Push 09. End 10. Piggy in the Mirror
This was the first version of The Big Hand that I ever listened to, and imo, it's one of these versions that makes you shiver and moves you, Robert really seems to be feeling what she sings.
It was always my biggest dream to see them live, and now time's moving on and it's probably never going to happen, but your video makes it happen a little, thank you very much.
Why is that? You can definitely realise your biggest dream. You just need to sacrifice a little. The Cure would be starting their European tour from February 2008. You can attend any of the dates. Would you be able to come to UK on 20th March 2008? They will be playing a gig at the Wembley Arena.
I am deeply touched by your message, thank you. It seems that all the tickets for the Wembley Arena show have been sold out. I'll have to travel halfway across the globe to see my beloved band in concert, (Poland, Berlin, Rome or Paris), a small sacrifice indeed, but most shows seem to be sold out already. I'll keep an eye on the Events calendar, and maybe someday it will happen for me.
Thank-you. Probably you are right about the tickets. I also haven't got a ticket as of now but I am still optimistic that I would get it. Just keep trying through Cure forums or communities. Sometimes, you would also get tickets from just outside the venue, though you need to be slightly careful about this. Anyway, don't worry. I think you will be able to attend their concert in the near future.
Well, that's what most of us are made to believe (with regards to "selling out"). It is not really an authentic statement.
By the way do you have a ticket for the Cure concert? I hope you enjoy the concert to the fullest. I will definitely be making an attempt to attend the concert though I haven't got a ticket as of now. I am still trying...
