I guess Mike might have a problem with the 5-yd contact rule on receivers, not to mention the new "defenseless receiver" concept. I wish someone would interview these guys and let them blast all this candy-ass rule changing that's gone on since the late '70s. The rule changes were done for one primary reason: increase passing and scoring even if done at the expense of the game's integrity. Otherwise, only hardcore fans will watch and NFL will miss profits from less defensive oriented fans.
Ndomakong..Suh got a $20,000 fine for a hit on Bengals qb Dalton that wasn't even close to how vicious 90% of Curtis' tackles were..man how pussified the NFL has become?
While the NFL star players try to grab more money from the owners and the owners try to grab more from the fans I like to think of the players who made the league what it is today. Mike Curtis is one of them. He disliked the union in his playing days and this is why he has been blacklisted from the HOF.
Love this guy, he played football the way it should be played.....violent and destructive and left his heart out on the field!! Wish guys today played like that.
A pioneer of the intense mind set that some players later brought into the game. I've seen em all and Mike Curtis should be in the Hall of Fame. Big, smart, quick, and brutal but with no bullshit like most of today's trash talkin', money hoggin, cry babies, whose head sizes are only exceeded by the size of their paychecks.
Great video. Loved seeing Curry, Matte and Boozer talk about the Mad Dog. Truly an intense player...saw him many times. Also saw Butkus, Lambert, and the rest and Curtis is definitely Hall of Fame material just like them. One of the first truly intense players of the game whose mindset was a Sunday ritual. Why he is not in there blows my mind. He was smart, quick, and brutal. The Jets whole game plan in 69 Super Bowl was to avoid Curtis the same way everybody tries to avoid Ed Reed today.
Theseare other notable NFL hall of fame worth players who belong in Canton:
Bubba Smith,Tommy Nobis,Tom Matte,Len Hauss,Bill Bergey,H. Carmichael,Joe Jacoby,Brian Sipe,Brian Mitchell,White Shoes Johnson,Chuck Foreman,LC Greenwood,Stan White,Bert Jones,Bob Kuchemburg,Lydell Mitchell,Lawrence McCutcheon,Drew Pearson,Harvey Martin,Jim Plunkett,Ed Poddolak,John Brodie and Jerry Kramer.Its a darn shame the hall has a limit each year as they need to what baseball hod did with their Negro leaguers.
@acetrain81 Not only that, but those players earned the right to be on that field. The idiot fan didn't. And to the players, the field is their place of employment. It's where they make a living. Just as I'm at work right now and if someone who doesn't belong here comes tearing through the shop, acting like a fool, I'd tackle them too.
@samarroon That was such a bad Super Bowl. All the turnovers and bad calls by the refs. If Dallas coach Tom Landry had played Roger Staubach instead of Craig Morton, Baltimore would have lost. But credit the Colts, they won thanks to Jim "Lassie" O'Brien.
Bill Curry has said that none of the former Colt players have ever been invited to Indy. It's a disgrace to forget these men who made the Colts a house hold name.
Not only has Mike Curtis been ignored, but Chris Hanburger of the Redskins has been ignored by the NFL Hall of Fame. He was well known for blitzing.
Bubba Smith accused his teammates of throwing Super Bowl III. For Earl Morrall not to see Jimmy Ore by himself with his arm up waving with no one around him, something was very wrong.
I didn't like the man at all, but he does deserve to be in the Hall of Fame as does guys like Johnny Robinson, Mike Stratton, Paul Lowe, Bob Talamini, Winston Hill, Jerry Kramer and Gino Cappeletti.
@Dietpepsivanilla I agree,but how about Mike Lucci,Alex Karras,Jim Marshall,Lee Roy Jordan,Chris Hanburger,Pat Fisher,Jerry Smith,Harold Carmichael,Drew Pearson,Cliff Branch,Larry Brown,Ray Guy,Kenny Stabler,Ken Anderson and Larry Seiple???
He should be in the HoF, but he was owned in Super Bowl III and he'd be tossed out of plenty of games today because of his clothesline tackles. But he wasn't a cheapshot artist like Jack Lambert, who was a dirty player.
@Dietpepsivanilla if you watch the tape of SB 3, he made about 10 tackles...the Jets admitted the gamme plan was to stay away from Curtis, who they considered great, and run to the opposite sdie, which they did 90% of the game....He is a true HOFamer, and played the game by the rules of the day...
@MIKEAVO, I do agree he should be in the HOF. No question. I didn't like him and I've seen the game plenty of times (I've got the game on DVD--SBIII) and he played well, as did Tom Matte, but as a MLB, he probably should have been in it more. Maybe I'm being hard on him, but there's no question from me he was great. Greater than cheapshot artist Lambert.
i had a feeling they were going to show Curtis knocking the drunk fan on his behind. Served the guy right, if you are gonna go on the field, be prepared to get tackled! The clip of Curtis sacking Roman Gabriel is also one that commonly gets shown as an example of good old fashioned smashmouth football.
1.Curtis definitely should be in the HOF! Bart Starr played against them all, and saw Butkus twice a year. The only player he said he was ever truly afraid of was Mike Curtis.
As I watched the current crop of NFL Hall of Famers inducted today I continue to be amazed that Mike Curtis is absent from Canton. I urge all football fans who view this video to email the Hall of Fame and ask for his induction especially Baltimore Colts and Baltimore Raven fans.
Since today is NFL Hall of Fame induction day 2009. I only wish that this man would get his just reward. I urge anyone viewing this video and all loyal BALTIMORE COLTS fans to email the HOF committee and insist he be put in!
Yep he was something else, growing up in Baltimore back in the 60's and 70's was something else. I am surprised he did not physically remove Earl Morrel's head back in 69' for officially blowing super bowl 3 to the Jets, in which Earl was paid off to lose that game. Curtis should have ripped his arms off. What a defense then, Bubba Smith, Billy Ray Smith, Curtis, I think the Colts gave up the fewest points ever in one season back in 68'
You know, I have often thought the same thing. Shula kept Unitas on the bench, Morrall played awful. Then, under odd circumstances, Shula and Morral both end up in Miami, Shula with a piece of the team. The next week the NFL replayed highlights of the game with Vince Lombardi trying to explain why the Jets won. Why did they need Lombardi to explain to us what happened? If the Colts had romped, the multi-million dollar merger was in trouble. That Colts team was one of the best ever. Odd.
Never new of that replay of Lombardi explaining the game. Loved to have seen it.
As far as the game being thrown, we the fans will never know. But if ever you can make a case. This is it.The Colt offense moved the ball up and down the field. Another twist is that not only Morral and Shula ended in Miami, but also receiver Willie Richardson. He played with Miami in 70' then returned to Baltimore in 71. Just long eneugh to miss out on the Colts SB V win.
Never knew of that Lomabardi explanation. Loved to have seen it.
Morral played horrendus ( the flea flicker play...OH MAN !! ) We'll never know, but if ever a case for throwing a game could be made , it 's here. The Colt offense moved the ball all over the field. Shula and Morral did end up in Miami, but so did receiver Willie Richardson for 1970.Then in 71' he was back with the Colts. Just long eneugh to miss out on the Colts SB V win.
I read that Bobby Boyd yelled at Morral during half time. I have to agree here. How Curtis did'nt beat up Morral is beyond me. He took the loss personally and was infuriated at losing to the AFL. The 68' Colts allowed 143 points on def. The 69' Vikings 133. Although both lost at the end. They were two of the most destructive teams to ever come out of the NFL. The phrase " smashmouth football' is often overused today.
In the case of these two, it may have been underused.!
I remember Mike Curtis, I grew up a Colts fan in Baltimore as a kid. Curtis was one tough customer like they say. He broke his forearm one year and the rest of the league heaced a sigh of relief. The next week he suited up with his arm in a cast, and he used the cast as a bludgeon, slammin' runners upside the head or in the throat. He was actually even more dangerous. He didn't tackle opponents, he destroyed them.
If I had to pick a defense for the NFL's ellite all time greatest players, Mike Curtis would not only be on the team, he would be a starter and the captain of the defense. And I grew up a Cowboy's fan. I see greatness, I am going to describe it as such. Mike Curtis your one of the greats.
Why isnt this man in the NFL Hall of fame.? He dominated his position for 7 yrs. The press never liked him and he wasnt fond of the players union. Hes being blacklisted .He should have been Superbowl MVP too but they gave it to someone on the loosing team, only time that ever happened. The league was nuts.
Gawd, I loved it when mad dog(Mike Curtis) and the stork(Ted Hendricks)were both with the Colts. It was freakin insane!! Nobody ever played with more intensity than Mike Curtis
God I'll always love Mike Curtis for hitting that fool of a fan people who run out onto the field need too have more done then a night in jail and barred from the arena.
i love that play. It's probably the greatest play in football history. Nowadays, Curtis would probably get sued for violating the rights of a fan running on the court!
Mike Curtis should be in the HOF. He was among the best. There are some great LB's not yet in the hall - two of the best are Curtis, and Denver's Randy Gradishar (the nice guy version of Curtis).
Maybe the most awesome thing is that the official catches the football after it flies up in the air. Is he concerned about the dumbass on the field who just got creamed? Not really... gotta catch this football first.
Mike Curtis is the reason I became a Colts fan, the exact moment was when he blew up that dude that tried to steal the gameball, coolest thing I have ever seen happen on a football field in my 47 years, go Mad Dog
No, Mike mad dog Curtis is not in the hall of fame I guess when you tell it like it is you get penalized for it. Oh well I know better I got to see him play a few games the man just played football the way it should be played.
I am a Raider fan...Boo..., but we would have loved Mike on our team, but Mike knocked heads for you guys for years! One of my favorite non-Raider players. Why this guy isn't in the Hall of Fame puzzlles me. MadDog was the shit!
It's a crying shame the Mike Curtis is not in the Hall Of Fame. He was one of the greatest middle linebackers in NFL history. He was smart, quick, and mean as hell. In my opinion, only Butkus was better. That makes Curtis the second best of all time.
Well I see it the other way Mad Dog #1 then Dick Butkus but the sad part is their will never be any one like them. After they were made they broke the mold, and roomer has it that Mike and Dick beat the shit out of the mold maker too. Just to make sure
You guys are forgetting Jack Lambert in the "mean" category. Trust me, I like all three of those guys. Lambert, Butkus, and Curtis were all really awesome.
Now their would be A linebacking core Jack Dick and Mike I would have like to seen that back in the day hell not to many running backs would have taken the ball up the middle well Jim Brown would still have run it. as for the QB's oh wwell the draft would be next spring.
Yes, your right about those players. But theres another one as well.Probably little known outside of Minnesota. But the late Wally Hilgenberg, who played right linebacker for the Vikings for 16 years, was once described as playing in a state of control rage, also considered one of the 10 meanest player back in the day. Made absolutely huge plays at the most precise moment,. Also known to take a couple of cheap shots here and there .......I dare say.
i am a huge football fan always wore #32 to honor Curtis, and played mlb...I refuse to visit the HOF until Curtis is in it.... it is a fraud without him!
This is a great video. It brings back so many good memories of going to BALTIMORE Colt games at Memorial Stadium with my dad. I've been saying for years that Mike Curtis should be in the Hall-of-Fame. He was the best of his era.
Thanks for posting. Mike Curtis was great. Always good for at least one or two big hits a week which would make the hi-lights on "This Week in Pro Football".
I guess Mike might have a problem with the 5-yd contact rule on receivers, not to mention the new "defenseless receiver" concept. I wish someone would interview these guys and let them blast all this candy-ass rule changing that's gone on since the late '70s. I just don't understand why Mike Curtis is not in the Hall of Fame. It's a tragedy.

This is a great video. It brings back so many good memories of going to BALTIMORE Colt games at Memorial Stadium with my dad. I've been saying for years that Mike Curtis should be in the Hall-of-Fame. He was the best of his era.
C-O-L-T-S...COLTS!

Most underrated LB in history! One of the meanest, toughest, nastiest mother fuckers ever! And I mean that as a compliment!
The guy was amazing and he, definitely, belongs in the HOF!

Pisses me off when people mention great linebackers from the 60's and 70's and most of the time they dont mention the MadDog

Thanks for posting. Mike Curtis was great. Always good for at least one or two big hits a week which would make the hi-lights on "This Week in Pro Football".
