The gulf stream brings warmer air up to the north and that is why Europe experiences milder temperatures. I seen a video here on youtube in which a guy has a graphic showing the loop being cut off due to the oil spill. That graphic was from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). That was in August. I also remember hearing years ago that if that conveyor belt of warm water and air stopped a mini ice age could come to Europe.
@frankcoffee yes, defo m8... i only really posted on the gulf stream so far as its the one thing ive been following since it was 1st suggested there may be a problem. but that doesnt mean it is the only thing affecting the weather. i think we may be looking at a number of different factors all coming together at once in a "perfect storm"

America gets snow in the northeast and the mid-west. Here on the east coast of America, we were blasted with snow up 6-7-8 inches last year. It was crazy! This year the mid-west was blasted with a crazy amount of snow. We're suppose to have a white Christmas, who knows what late December-early 2011 will bring.
Always wonder why people from far off climes feel the need to comment how cold it gets where they are. Simple fact remains Britain is NOT used to this weather nor the extreme temperatures. Up to the mid 80's it snowed like this every year in the winter in England. i do find it strange that suddenly from the mid 80's i just stopped snowing in the winter apart from maybe a few flurries....now this winter its back towards what it used to be like....could it be the gulf stream belt isnt protecting the uk as much...we shall see

Thunder-snow storms indeed happen. I first saw one in the '60s growing up in New Jersey. Cold air low to the earth makes the snow and an upper level warm front causes the thunder & lightning. Rare and strange. We get snows like what's happening in England here in NJ almost every year, but if you're not used to it, it can be deadly.Bundle up Brits and stay home if you can.

Here in southwestern Ontario Canada we received approx. 1.5 metres of snow between Dec. 6-8 2010. That's about an entire seasons worth in 48 hrs. Not bad.

I'm a yank, and know little about the British climate, at any level. When I see these images, I'm wondering if they could be coming from Evergreen or Conifer. Even Denver, though we have been really dry here. What happened to the Gulf of Mexico is a travesty. The Gulf Stream is important to all of us. My heart goes to all Europeans that might suffer through this crap.

We are too close to the Arctic but we're lucky because this warm water pushed up to Britian and northern Europe which keeps the cols off us. it's called the Atlantic Conveyor Belt. Only madmen would drill for oil in this region and they were warned before they drilled!

They did establish for a fact that the gulf stream is broken and did measurements of the current showing it was 10 degrees Celsius below normal. So it looks very valid all this extreme winter weather is related to the gulf stream breaking.

This cold weather is due to a shift in the JET stream - NOT the Gulf Stream.
The Jet Stream shift started about two years ago and made last winter worse for us in the UK, when Councils ran out of road salt.
This year the idiot Councillors say they are fully stocked with *12* days salt.
Sadly they do not have the wit to find out what lies ahead of us this winter, and yet again they will blame *their* failure upon unpredictably bad weather.

last week, @ 9am, on an otherwise normal morning, the sky darkened and then a blast of wind drove snow and hale horizontally for @ 5min. i thought the skylight and roof would blow off. the same thing happened @ 2 yrs ago. i was in a taxi with a friend. at a red light when the wind started rocking us violently, @ 2 min. i don't ever remember such violent sustained winds.

This is very rare and the roads are not up to it. There are no protectors and you can just go off a cliff.
I can testify to the lack of snow in London. Lived there for 3 yrs, and one winter at Christmas it dropped below freezing and snowed. Once. 90% of Britain covered before Dec is most concerning.

Movies I highly recommend: The Day After Tomorrow, The Core, Volcano (with the Mine accidents), and 2012. They are not just highly entertaining movies, but could give us insight into what might happen, depending on what Earth's situation truly is.

They were specifically predicting wild temperature fluctuatons for various parts of the globe (outside the norms for individual geographic areas), hence blizzards, floods, heatwaves, droughts in places people don't expect them. Exactly what we've seen over the past decade, records of all sorts being broken repeatedly, worldwide.
It is very far from a joke. The Gulf disaster can't be helping much, either.

It's just snow man. Haven't you ever seem snow before? Happens every winter you know. Get over it. When it melts in the spring they will turn around and say it's global warming...Yeah right. Minus 8 degrees is not that cold. I've been in places where it hits minus 50..and ya that's cold. It warms up in the summer..don't worry about it.

First, the man taking the video for the last 20 seconds, this guy should be making audio CDs doing story telling for children, he has an excellent voice and enunciates well, the accent will be a hit with North American audiences. Here in southwestern Ontario Canada we received approx. 1.5 metres of snow between Dec. 6-8 2010. That's about an entire seasons worth in 48 hrs. Not bad.

I'm a yank, and know little about the British climate, at any level. When I see these images, I'm wondering if they could be coming from Evergreen or Conifer. Even Denver, though we have been really dry here. What happened to the Gulf of Mexico is a travesty. The Gulf Stream is important to all of us. My heart goes to all Europeans that might suffer through this crap.

Yes, !0-15 feet of snow is common in the UP of Michigan. But it's not just the snow,
It's the combo. The cooler it gets, the more energy is involved. Energy costs money. Right now I need a new roof. We're due for a big snow storm overnight. It isn't cold yet, it's actually raining. We would have over 5 inches if the front had been colder. The conditions from the G of m are a direct concern. People are dying here from internal bleeding in Louisiana! People..turn off the TV!!!!!

it might also be the case that scientists noticed that the gulf stream was fluctuating a few years ago and came to the conclusion that due to the gravitational forces being experienced by our solar system....because of this 2012 alignment....they had to find some way of hiding this fact from the public ....so they dreamt up an accident (BP Oil spill).....so that everyone would blame the oil and dispersant and forget the cosmic mutation which is occuring as we "speak"

We are too close to the Arctic but we're lucky because this warm water pushed up to Britian and northern Europe which keeps the cols off us. it's called the Atlantic Conveyor Belt. The Gulf is like the main vein of the world oceans, the weather is controlled quite literally from this region. Only madmen would drill for oil in this region and they were warned before they drilled!

They did establish for a fact that the gulf stream is broken and did measurements of the current showing it was 10 degrees Celsius below normal. So it looks very valid all this extreme winter weather is related to the gulf stream breaking.

Funny thing we have about 4 inches here at the moment and it's still snowing and in the last few minutes we have been getting thunder and lightning. Weird! Time is 01.33 I've never seen thunder and lightning during a snow storm before. Let me know if your getting that down in Glasgow Kev!

This cold weather is due to a shift in the JET stream - NOT the Gulf Stream.
The Jet Stream shift started about two years ago and made last winter worse for us in the UK, when Councils ran out of road salt.
This year the idiot Councillors say they are fully stocked with *12* days salt.
Sadly they do not have the wit to find out what lies ahead of us this winter, and yet again they will blame *their* failure upon unpredictably bad weather.

i live in the north east of england & the snow is at least 10 inches deep,this is only the second time my 15yr old son has saw deep snow the first time was last winter,usualy when we did get snow it would be february time,we've got even more snow coming our way over the next few days according to the forecasts,so its going to be chaos traveling,if the gulf stream is stopping im moving to another country,our country is bollocks anyway

we've had a regular progressively colder autumn here in montreal and right now we're getting our first significant snowfall.
last week, @ 9am, on an otherwise normal morning, the sky darkened and then a blast of wind drove snow and hale horizontally for @ 5min. i thought the skylight and roof would blow off. the same thing happened @ 2 yrs ago. i was in a taxi with a friend. at a red light when the wind started rocking us violently, @ 2 min. i don't ever remember such violent sustained winds.

Nice to hear your voice. I don't think my students in France can understand you, but I will nonetheless direct them to your new channel. I had to do business in Edinburgh in 1980 and had to ask the guys at that nice record store to write things down for me. Really fun. We just had snow in Southern France, where I was in September. This is very rare and the roads are not up to it. There are no protectors and you can just go off a cliff.

I can testify to the lack of snow in London. Lived there for 3 yrs, and one winter at Christmas it dropped below freezing and snowed. Once. 90% of Britain covered before Dec is most concerning.
