  • Execuse me! What brand and model of the oboe you are playing? Plastic or wooden?

  • Wow, practice before you play next time. Maybe listen to a recording of yourself. Intonation, PHrasing and finger technique. Uninspriring...

  • this is really nice. thank you for posting. i have been playing oboe for a few months and i just picked this piece to play. you did a very nice job overall. i enjoyed it.

  • i agree with some of the comments already listed however this is a very difficult piece to play in fact it is a diploma standard piece!! i should know because i am playing it for my oboe diploma. if you want to improve this recording instead of recording it in a restricting area play it in a larger area and your sound should improve as it is very harsh on the recording .

you had a good go (work on your top e's!!)

    thanks for posting it though.

    x

  • wow... this isn't that bad people!!! stop being so rude. gosh..

  • You need more air pressure, and more continuity!!!!!!!

  • Not too bad, but you should practice and play more frequently. the more often you do so, the more beautiful the tone etc. gets...

  • Some intonation problems, but you really have the feel of this piece. You really have to have a reed that can do it all--something that will allow you to jump from one octave to the next.

    Good job!

  • hi

did you know where I can find the recording piano part?

  • Any tips on playing oboe? I just started playing a oboe today :)

  • People shouldn't be so rude

This is a very difficult piece for oboe

My KIND recommendation is note the drastic changes in dynamics Poulenc uses

Incredibly difficult but they make the piece

p.s. your tone isn't horrible. Tone is a matter of opinion :p

You do the runs at 2.20 better than me :)

  • I dont really get it, if your a floutist why are you playing an incredibly difficult piece for OBOE?

  • I dare say that the negative comment ppeople have never put an oboe reed to to their lips never mind played a tune. Yes it it wasn't perfect but as an oboe grade 7 player who's been through the same problems I challenge these 'critics' to give it a try. ........................

  • Right on. The oboe is way difficult. Every note demands attention to wind pressure and even embouchure changes. I took up the oboe 3 years ago and I must say it's the most difficult challenge of my life. But worth it! Keep it up, DeathStix!

  • actually the intonation and tone is quite nice for someone of his background who does not specialize in the oboe..

    oboe reeds are incredibly temperamental

my advice to him is to use more vibrato and have stronger breath support,

  • haha much better than our highschool's oboists for sure...

  • Sounds a bit forced out..

You might consider a better reed. :D BUt you did excellent, since oboe is not even your main instrument.

    GIVE HIM A BREAK!

He is a professional flautist not oboist! :D

    NIce Attempt! :D

  • im a novice:) im doing my grade 3 soon. i find it realy helpfull listening to people playing on here, as my oboe teacher is just a woodwind one and its got to the point were he cant teach me any more.. thinking of uploading a vid of me plaing my grade peices for comments on how to improve. any way, i think you sound amazing :)

  • sound like your reed is giving you alittle bit of trouble... Maybe more ab support needed?

Also your fingers look a bit tense which causes random goof ups. This is my biggest problem. Just try to relax them

    good job overall though!

  • Sounds great! I've played the flute sonata! Does anybody know where i can listen to the third movement (I think) of this sonata???

  • I find oboe a hard instrument, and I play the flute,: embouchure is higly alike actually, but poulenc is hard to play well.

  • i love your tone on oboe (:

normally oboe's squeak when they're playing that high.

    nice playing (:

  • My favorite oboe piece. Breathe more...blow! Take more time...

Poulenc is easy to play, hard to play well.

  • Hey, bravo to you! There are some really beautiful moments.

  • 美

  • Great Job! I know its so difficult to remember to not use the octave key on high D , but to do the half fingering. and also high e flat is difficult mostly for me! haha . But Great Job! The oboe is a difficult instrument and for all the other instruments you play that was good!

    -Anish!:)

  • you have a really good tone, but one thing i would say is, in the first statement, don't chop off the F#. try to taper the note and the end. other than that great job. keep up the good practicing!

  • Drop the jaw and then push the air tilting the head slightly down gives the sound more of an egde or at least it did for me. LOVE THIS PIECE!!! YOUR REALLY GOOD!!!!!!

  • i like ur tone

  • try to focus on opening up the oral cavity. it will give your playing a deeper sound. it helped me once I figured out how to do it.

this is a very beautiful piece. very hard, but very beautiful.

keep working! you're doing good so far!

  • You kidding me? This piece is not that challenging to play well. Make a reed suitable for octave jumps, keep your air going, and the rest is gravy. If you consider this piece difficult, yeesh...I got some bad news for you in the form of Vaughan Williams, Mozart, and Hindemith.

  • I've already done Hindemith and Mozart. I was just trying to be incouraging. I'd rather you not cut me down when you have not heard my playing.

  • I'm not cutting you down. Did I mention even one thing about your playing? Stop being so insecure and sensitive, sheesh...what a delicate ego you must have. My point was that if you consider this piece to be very difficult, then there are other pieces that you'd probably consider other-worldly.

  • "very difficult" doesn't only mean the technical demands

  • Thank you, Mr. Obvious. It's still not that difficult a piece. I would expect most high school seniors (or even juniors if they're dedicated enough) to be able to play this piece well without too much difficulty.

  • I was a sophomore who played for two years when I learned this piece.

  • Yeah okay hybridce, you're such an expert. This is a standard piece in the oboe repertoire. It is on lists for the top international oboe competitions, including the International Barbirolli Competition this coming April. Keep looking for 'gravy' elsewhere and leave this nice gentleman alone. Do you realize you are 26 and 'EdwardCullen' is 15? You sound completely ridiculous, and should be embarrassed.

  • Age difference has hardly anything to do with it. My only point through out the whole back and forth was that this piece is not as difficult as he makes it out to be. I don't see anything ridiculous about that. Obviously, this is considered standard repertoire. Doesn't make it especially challenging. Furthermore, I'm not embarrased by anything I said. I stand by it. It's not my fault the kid is too arrogant to or defensive.

  • Following up on the whole argument as to whether the piece is difficult or not; I'm currently going into my second year of studying the oboe at the conservatory in the Hague, and I consider this piece to be surprisingly difficult, there are lots of tricky octave jumps down or sudden high notes. Combining all that to music sounding as though it was easy is a very challenging aspiration, worthy of international competitions and final exams and so on.

  • Actualy the second mvt is quite challenging.

  • I suppose I don't have to point out the obvious, but what I will point out is that you have really nice tone/sound. I think you have a good idea of what you want to sound like, but perhaps the reed was somewhat limiting. But you have a good embouchure, so keep that up for sure. It's probably one of the best I've seen on youtube thus far (among younger players, at any rate)...better than most of the kids claiming to be freakin' oboe Gods.

  • jeez how many instruments do u play?

  • This music needs to be on Youtube. Thanks!

  • only criticism really is the general shaping and dynamics, but the essentials are there:) well done

  • this is really good! i'm a multi instrumentalist too:) i'm learning a lot of poulenc too through choice mainly, but also its part of the grade 8 syllabus, i love the second movement its crazy to play but amazing

  • I played Poulenc for a recital, it truely is a very wonderful piece of music.

  • What oboe is that?

  • you have a very nice sound, I played the oboe til i was a sophomore in high school.

    :]

  • You're right :) I'm not :) but I believe that I can be good :) I'm studing so I have time to be better and better. I have also good (probably one of 2 the best in Poland) teacher so I try to use it :)

But you have 100% right. I am not a master ^^

  • Wow u're a retard.

  • I'm refering to Sean26a FYI.

  • I think it's good. How long have you been playing? I might be playing this for solo & ensemble, but I'm probably playing Six Metamorphoses after Ovid.

  • Although I started playing (pretty badly) in 1995, it's not really a full-time instrument like the flute and clarinet at the moment.

You should learn the Poulenc anyway, even though you might not play it for exams and stuff...because it's a wonderful piece of music! (which I did not do justice to).

  • Oh yeah, definetly. The Poulenc sonata for Oboe and Piano is such a beautiful piece.

I play a little clarinet, and I play the flute. I'm not very good on the flute, but I'm very good for only playing for 8 months. :)

  • thanks for putting this up!

i'm playing this piece at solo and ensemble today. :)

  • are you crazy? this is played really poorly...I don't like this.

  • then go ahead and sue me for putting up such an awful piece of playing on youtube.

  • playing on many instruments means that you will never be able to play GOOD on anyone.

sound is bad, articulation is bad, vibration is bad, intonation is bad...think about it :)

I'm not going to sue you for putting this up...but if you did this I can comment this..so I do ;)

    Greetings.

  • Please grow up Sean. Give constructive comments, TheOboeNerd is a living example. He's a musician and i think he knows he screwed up some parts. Its still a nice attempt.

  • I'd rather not play well on all instruments,

because I believe no one in this world can claim to be a MASTER of one.

So I guess you are one of those masters right.

  • actually not true. Once you can play one instrument well, you play others well... as long as you keep practicing them all.

  • this is true :)

i have a degree in multiple instruments and its very very true :)

  • More dynamic contrast could be used, and I think that Bar 28 should be a half note and and eighth, not a quarter and a half.

The piano is overpowering you. At bar 48, really play out.

    Nice work.

  • yeah try play gabriel's oboe...it's a very beautiful song..you can come to Sarawak and play with my band...heheh

  • ur pretty good. nice job, especially on the tone of the music and the way you crescendoed (if that's the way you say it :)) It was real pretty.

  • Sorry to say that it's maybe too difficult for tou level, this piece is pretty hard even for professional oboists...

  • Primu, then you should compliment him for trying

  • lovely!

  • Poulenc rox

  • Very nice ! good sound, very good keywork, perfectly in tune, small mistake at the end.

  • are u a band teacher?? to play lots of instruments is very ingenious....wowXD

  • You amaze me at how well you play so many instruments! What is your main instrument and which one is your favorite to play?

  • try play 'gabriel's oboe'.. its a very very nice piece..

  • Yea for the wonderful music of Poulenc. Keep playing his pieces.

  • beautiful.

  • how many instruments do u play?
