With respect to the tradition, either get more experience and exposure to the techniques and get PERMISSION to share it after an Ngewel says so, OR cease and desist. Seriously. And marriage to or association with a Senegalese does not give you any rights to teach our culture without authorization. The reason that Sabar technique has endured centuries is because it is passed on by those that KNOW. Your lessons mislead, although most will not take these lessons from you seriously.

im in ballet, but when you spot something on the wall and keep you head in 1 spot you dont get az dizzy. when you get better then you dont get dissey at all
@aguisse1 and arawak: I appreciate this instructor's videos. I've contacted her personally instead of hating on her publicly. If you don't agree with her pedagogy, then fine. Just remember that many of us don't have access to regular dance classes. It's catch as catch can. These aids help us understand movements we might only see once a year.
Cyclonejones is right: you don't have to be an expert to teach the basics. BTW, I'm African American. And I'm a dance teacher.
i dont know anything about this dance and wanted to learn a bit. i did. So all you self righteous experts should come up with a solution to this so called problem of a tutorial, instead of being so mad. CORNY.
Example... i've been dancing for over 20 years and i know you don't need to be Twila Tharp to teach a basic turn
Ndeye Gueye put out an instructional Sabar dance video (with Sing Sing on percussion!) a loooooong time ago, by far it is the best I've seen in breaking down the moves. Ndeye Gueye is a master in her craft! Can't wait to dance with her again in 2010. Infinite blessings!
WRONG!! Its not about posting our own tutorials. This dance form, as with many others can not be broken down into bite sized chunks for the western palate. "Hippie chick" as you call her, claims to have a degree in ethnomusicology and should know better. Just like you cant watch instrutional videos in ballet and expect to learn it the same is true of sabar.
Now, as far as shutting up goes, WRONG AGAIN! If I see something I disagree with I will respectfully voice my opinion. Telling people to shut up because you dont like what they say is what 5 year olds do. The "sabar experts" know what they are talking about. The criticisms were accurate and fair.
So, now can I expect to get a, "shut up" comment in response to what I've written?
@aguisse1 - I was saying POST YOUR OWN TUTORIAL or shut up. artists comment on other artists through thier art. words are just words. shttting on some one is not as valuable as teaching.
i would like to read more constructive comments...most people who watch these videos r tryn to learn something..so, can you please direct viewers to videos where they can learn from someone QUALIFIED to teach instead of shooting people down..im a teacher who doesn know the dance but would love to direct students on how to learn it..make sense? peace
Your Sabar need a lot of work. It takes a long time to master. I have been dancing Sabar since the early 80's. You should not be teaching any African Dance.
i think this is very helpful.. u really are good.. i myself am from gambia which basically is in senegal n i find it difficult to do these moves. perhaps if you dance with the music at the end of each video might help us with our rhythm.. keep it up!!!!!!!!!!
don't listen to these haters. i'm just learning the basics of this complex dance and it was very helpful for me to see the sabar moves broken down and repeated. i checked out all your sabar videos and was happy to find something i could follow.
The poster is not a hater. This person does'nt really have the dance together in order 2 teach. Sabar is very complex and knowing the music and timing is very important. If u use this as a tool 2 help u learn Sabar u will find yourself lost in the average class. While 2 it may look like she knows what she's doing, she really should take more classes and focus on technique which she is sorely lacking. Never allow some one to lead u in the wrong direction just because they say they know the way.
I was at the African dance conference in Boston, which you also attended. Too bad I didnt get to speak to you face to face, we were pushed out of the room as soon as class was done. But I must say that after seeing you dance in person I am even more uncomfortable with the role you have assumed as instructor. There were many great dancers in class that day who have trained for years and years. In their presence, your lack of training was most evident. Please, before you teach you must study.
I see that you have studied African dance for only abt four years. Yet you feel comfortable posting instructional videos? It takes years of highly rigorus training to become ballet or modern dancer. Why do you presume that African dance requires less? It belies the long history and tradition of this culture. It also smacks of cultural superiority when you feel, that after a couple of years of classes you are qualified to teach what has taken hundereds of years to create, this is disrepectful.
this looks wack

No!...
besides the fact that you are not an expert,
AA's are not interested in white folk teaching us about our culture...this is an insult!
Why do you feel qualified to in the first place?
