yeah um have a few questions. im looking for a beginneer bird thats not as small as a budgie but something a bit bigger . im willing to spend couple hundred but am also deicated and commited to tking care of the bird since i already had expirence iwth amphibians lizards what is a good bird list in the reletively quiet range other than doves n stuff
@Mr123Predator Sounds like you might be a match for a Rosey Bourke Parakeet (I actually still want one)
Traits: Bourke’s parakeets are friendly and smart. They can make wonderful pets if hand-fed because hand-fed birds are less flighty than those that are parent-raised. Unlike other Australian parrots, such as the cockatiel or budgie, the Bourke’s parakeet is not as active. Bourke’s parakeets are more mellow at dawn and dusk when they make their twittering sounds.
I have had doves as pets. It is true, they are affectionate, calm animals. They never hurt me in any way and their singing was really soothing to listen.
Hm. I've always loved birds. I would like to have one later (I'm only 17)...If a dove were a dog, would classify it (in terms of behaviour/personality) as a passive dog like a Great Dane while those small parakeet birds are like the small yappy dog breed? Because I'd really like to get a bird and a dove seems like the appropriate bird for a first-timer. I find their sounds soothing and quiet unlike some other birds.
That's good to know that they have relatively long lifespans!
I would get one now but I'm a student with hardly any time for a social life, let alone a pet. Someday though... I've heard nothing but good things about them as pets!
Beautiful bird! I'm thinking of getting one. How large of a cage would you suggest? I plan on letting him or her fly around for at least an hour a day. Thanks.
how do you build there trust? And if you stick your finger out like a perch will they go on it? Will they eat out of your palm. Can you hold them? Should you get them a mate?
Personally, I think they are the most trusting bird (they quickly adapt to new surroundings & just as fast, will trust new owner). Talk to bird as you place finger under belly slowly a few times each day. Then begin to lift under belly so it has no other option than to step up on your finger.
You'll see that in no time at all your bird will fly to you when outside its cage (indoors). And if hungry, will eat out of your palm. Introducing a mate (it will bond with him/her instead).
my dove is almost 21 his mate passed about 11 yrs ago at 11yrs old. They are so sweet and their cooing is so beautiful mine doesnt coo like he used to, but i get the pleasure of hearing it now and then.
I got bit by my friend's dove once and you barely even feel it's nothing, plus, they're really gentle, I'm just an idiot and animals hate me lol anyways if I was less of a klutz I'd get one. they're really sweet. (they do poo on you though)
My doves will bite to protect their eggs. Their beaks are not sharp, and they're weak, so it doesn't hurt at all. It just startles the heck out of you. Sometimes they "wing box" too. They hit you with the front "elbow" of their wing.
Mines won't bite but will make an 'unhappy' noise if too close to her unfertilized eggs
The last time I was 'wing boxed' was back in my old house as I handfed the outdoor pigeons. I'd offer them seeds in the palm of my hand and close my hand to see their reaction.
These pigeons set their own clock when it came to feeding time & if I wasn't out there, they made sure to remind me by pecking at my kitchen window and staring inside!
I got 2 baby doves that i've been taking care of since they were born. but For Some Reason they run away wwhen i pet them but whenever i do some thing els they get close to me
Honestly I really dont know...When i was Living in California back in 2003 A Friend gave me a cockatiel and a White dove together. It didnt cross my mind too ask him what ages etc etc...Im Sorry:(
I have a dove and was told it was a male. They said with the brown ring around its neck and the noises it makes , its a male. well i jsut bought him a bigger food dish and cage and he laid an egg in it. so im guessing its actually a female? I named it Jude after Saint Jude (Saint of the impossible) so if its a girl I guess it will be Jud----y
my dove loved me, never wanted to be in his cage, i left my friend keep him for awhile since the place i live doesnt allow pets.
Thanks for posting this! I just got one today from a Wildlife Care Center. There are a bunch of them on PetFInder. I got a mate for my RingCollared Male whom it VERY lonely and the cooing is NON stop. I havent been able to sex this one but hopefully it will make a GREAT companion. Do you have another account? Myspace? Email? Thanks.
Oh dear! What did you do with the eggs? I was told they can lay them on their own without any contact whatsoever. How long had you had her before she laid them? Any other telltale sign to sexing them???
hi, please help me. i have pairs of ringneck dove, spotted dove, dwarf turtle dove, cuckoo dove, white eared brown dove and emerald dove. each pair has their own cage but is to small. i plan of buying a huge cage for all of them. is it a good idea that different dove species share a single huge cage? thanx. just like an aviary?
Some dove species are more aggressive than others & you want to avoid cross-breeding & rivalry. Sounds like your aviary is big enough to house compatible dove species. If I were you, I'd research this arrangement by asking an avian specialist or a reputable bird pet shop manager to get a professional opinion - good luck!
Thanks. My OLD dove is pecking the NEW (white) dove alot. The whole purpose to get the white one was to keep my original ring tailed one company (his separation anxiety FROM ME was driving me crazy). The white dove wants to be near him. HE wants nothing to do with the whote one (not sexed but maybe female).... any suggestions?
My females normally bow & coo also but it's more of a twitching feather kind of bow
The males would be bowing more aggressively and fanning their tail feathers while walking around at the same time. The females tend to stay in place.
Hey what a beautiful bird you have!!! I found one yesterday that I beleve is a dove and we are feding it just wild bird seed is that what they ae supposed to eat what do feed yours?? Its so pretty!!!!!!!
If you found a wild dove - be careful. Wild birds can carry diseases and pass them to you.
I feed mines a formulated dove mixture from the pet shop.
The wild bird seeds are best fed to wild birds because they have a higher fat content for very fast metabolisms. Keep in mind that your bird is no longer wasting energy flying away from predators.
Thank you so much I actually believe the bird I found was probably someones pet cuz it is very friendly and tame but it is also hurt very bad and very skinny so I am not sure but thank you very much
Pigeons have a stocky build while doves have a leaner and longer appearance.
I think it's the angle which makes her look heavier, plus she may have been 'fluffed' a bit after noticing a strange object (camera) in her territory ;-)
Although pigeons & doves come from the same family
thank u very much i am 12 and i wanted and researched all about birds and my number 1 choise was the dove because of thier offection and gentle nature.

And your dove is beautiful :)

For those who frequently ask about life span:
In captivity they can live longer than 20 years with proper care.
In the wild (after all, it's a tough world out there), they rarely live past 2 years old
