  • used to be my favorite show as a kid

  • @pazomotti mine too, I was just amazed by him at a young age at about 3 years old, I 'may have not gotten the full scope of what he was saying but it held my attention for the whole hour and many episodes.

  • LOL MEDIEVAL TAPESTRY YTMND LOL!!!

  • @akleinhesselink amen to that akle. I was a teen in high school when this aired I loved this show.

  • @akleinhesselink

That's when I first watched these as well. I don't remember the years. But, at that time, cable was cable and regular t.v. was regular politically correct t.v. You could watch a show like this and not worry about the nudity! Soon, cable became regular t.v. and you couldn't really show it any more(americans can't be mature about it; her body isn't worth looking at anyways!).

  • Interesting video - friend and subscribe for day trading, day trader, day trade videos, technical analysis...

  • Love this Series!

  • Virtually free electricity?

  • hÍhi_Í_fëel_s0_lÔnélY_tØDâY

  • That was one downfull of the Roman Empire - they didn't have stirrrups?

  • Thanks for giving me access to what I can honestly say is my favorirte bbc series of all time. i wouldn't go gay for james burke, but i'd come pretty close.

  • @OakeshottXVI The new idea is not cavalry, but cavalry implementing both stirrups and the couched lance, along with the efectiveness of the kite shield implemented by cavalry on the withdraw, and don't kid yourself, before the age of sulfa drugs and anti biotics, disease and infection was the greatist killer of armys post battle, many may have been incapacitated by the spear in battle, but the results from infection removed many a soldier from particapating in any sort of coordinated resistance

  • I like this series, but the introduction to this episode is full of glaring errors. Most of the deaths in a battle occurred during a rout, where people were killed outright, not through infected wounds. The spear did most of the fighting, not the sword. The shields shown are used both by men on foot and on horseback. The stirrup did not effect much change, and on and on. Most ridiculous, though, is the idea that "cavalry" was a new thing. Has he never heard of Alexander the Great? Or the Huns?

  • Awesome show. BBC educational program has, IMO, been the best in th English language for the last 40 years.

  • I went to turn off winamp....

I heard MAHLER V aksjfgahkjsf I have this recording...so good..

  • I remember watching James Burke when my age was barely in double figures, and being fascinated, and I still am watching (I'm 37 now)

  • Death in the Morning - nuclear weapons.

So, distant voices - a paraphrasing of the actual name of the invention

  • @ryoushii "Death in the morning" is probably a reference to Hiroshima bombing because the nuclear bomb was dropped at 8:15 in the morning.

  • 3:40

  • Poor Harold and his men never had a chance. Had to march all the way down the country only AFTER having fought already 10 days before like mr burke said

  • JB is my hero. Someday I hope to have him over for a nice Sunday ham. He'll carve of course.

  • Keep in mind this was done before either Chernobyl of Three Mile Island if that mutes your shock at his optimistic tone.

  • One of these days, an Al Qaeda oprative will do exactly what James Burke is talking about to an American city and there is absolutely nothing we can do to stop them. They will probably us either a stolen Pakistani bomb or Iran or even North Korea will give them one to do it. It will happen.

  • Not exactly Bronowsky but I love the intense random brain bashing flood of information, its addictive. The man is rather vain but puts some of his money where his mouth is as far as actually traveling, as I suppose he does, to some pretty exotic places. Again, not quite beyond the shadow of the role model, J.B. one, ( Coincidence ?), but heck, I dont even know who started this style of viedo making first, For all I know J. Burke was first. Does anyone know, please tell.

  • @damian13531

    Kenneth Clark's Civilisation 1969

Jacob Bronowski's Ascent of Man 1973

    James Burke's Connections 1978

David Attenborough's Life On Earth 1979

    Carl Sagan's Cosmos 1980

I don't know if there were any before Civilisation (which Attenborough helped develop as controller of BBC2) but would love to find out. I wonder also if there are similar series made in say China or Japan that tell the same story from their perspective. Those, if they exist, would be very interesting to watch.

  • Thanks for sharing these... they're great,

  • Get James Burke On the Case,

    Sucking in the Human Race

  • We watched this at School and were like, NUCLEAR BOMB YAY!!!!

  • It shows you that one mistake can really have dreadfull outcome

  • Kinda like not buying Microsoft when it was at $2.50 ... That was a *hell* of a mistake!

Well, off to cook my last piece of chicken liver and see if I can scrape together enough hidden bits of uncooked rice - from behind the radiators naturally (and I know they're there the little bastards, taunting me as usual) - for a tasty, even if unsalted, side order! Yum.

  • Yep and I bet I will kick myself for missing those same opportunites in todays market!

  • You will my friend. you will...

  • Apparently the Russians are missing quite a few of the atomic briefcase bombs

  • What more evidence do we need that we are Devo?

  • I've never understood that term "Devo". I think it means "devolving/devolved" or something like that. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    - JBW

  • I don't much know either. I do know that the early 80's band, "Devo", claimed that the name was short for "De-Evolved" referring to the back to basics sound that they felt they had.

  • it usually refers to development eg evo-devo. I have no idea in what context you are using it.

eg evo-devo = evolutionary developmental biology

  • I *did* look it up of course. But there were several definitions offered. It's more of a developing word it seems. It's also, as Paul points out, a word popularized through a music group.

But I think it's an interesting word which is why I asked. There's no such thing as "devolution" (oxymoron; Evolution is non-directional) and I think "Devo" probably knew this very well when they chose the name. Very ironic and funny and kinda "makes ya think" (that's a good thing btw)

    - JBW

  • Actually I think he's referring to the 1980s New Wave Rock Band "Devo" which was short for "De-Evolution", which was a theory of lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh

  • Yes, I guess that's what I was trying to say, it *is* a reference to "Devo" and presumbably to the oxymoron that it represents. Very clever indeed.

Of course, you never know... maybe they didn't intend it as a joke in the same sense!

  • The nightmare is, suitcase bombs are an old style type of weapon that we all knew about and even so, there are still many that don't think that these things exist and can pop up in most any town at most any time. All it takes is for some nut toi actually do it. It's too big a threat to stand around and give some whick job a chance.

  • It's surprising really that it hasn't happened given all the nutcases we're told exist in the world and that have access to all this early 20th century technology.

Perhaps the estimation on the number of really dangerous nutcases out there (those with the will *and* the means) is greatly exaggerated?...

    - JBW

  • Could be just an exagerated number but, you'd think that out of the six billion plus fof us, there HAS to be at least one "Cobra Commander" out there! LOL!

Sorry, with the new GI-Joe movie due out this weekend, I'm all a titter! LOL!

  • By far my favorite episode of Connections...but all of the first series is amazing. Thanks for posting!

  • You're very welcome.

My personal favourite from Connections I is episode 7 "The Long Chain" which I plan to feature soon. Still struggling with the summary ;)

    - JBW

  • I love James Burke's work, especially this show, and would like to see his early 70s Burke specials if they are somehow available.

  • I've searched and searched. Just a few clips already on YouTube of "Tomorrow's World". Nothing on any torrent sites that I can find :(

    - JBW

  • Teaching you how to think..this man is brilliant...

  • Yes, absolutely! ... an amazing educator given that fact alone.

The very first thing you must learn before you can even begin learning, is knowing how to think.
