  • i want the rc version of that...

  • when nasa first launches........"WHO WANTS TO TRY OUT NEW SOLAR POWERED PLANE?"......all runs away not trusted

  • So majestic

  • nice plane and sunny ;-)

  • did you know that there is more energy used to build a solar cel, than what it produces in its usefull life?....i'am not saying this isn't progress

  • @camjua00 same with many materials, glass, metal, silicon, plastic it all takes huge amounts of energy to make, as always we will eventually find a way to make things better.

  • i so desperately want to see a video of the crash!

it got into turbolence, got stuck in a u-shape, then shattered and fell into the ocean. please tell me if you find footage of this on youtube! and thumbs up on the comment if you want to help me with my search for that video ;)

  • @railrdr523

well, i guess then you failed as well. solar panels are dark, often close to black, but dont produce heat, at least far less compared to a normal surface of the same darkness. the difference is what goes into electricity. the perfect solar panel is black. if a panel doesnt produce energy, (unconnected/broken) it will get hot in sunlight, while a working panel stays quite cool. if a working panel would heat up and not stay cooler, where would the energy come from?

  • I want to build one of these so bad!

  • Impressive! Glide slope ratio? remote controlled?

  • amamzing

wouldnt work in britain tho :/

  • The most impressive thing here is the strength of that wing spar.

  • this strongly resembles something...

long, thin, unconventional, propellers creating flickering light, its shiny...

    flickering lights...

    UFO?

  • @Elliotvisualeffects You cant have 100% efficiency without having 10% mate.

  • Life is more than magic. Life is seriously much more.. than magic.

    Everything is meant to be.

  • I think they System is taking over the world.

    THE SYSTEM... THE SYSTEM ITSELF!!!!!

not a single person, not a group, not anything, but the system itself with its own conciousness.....When the brain developed to a certain level, with its mass amounts of cells.... CONCIOUSNESS BEGAN...

Society also ... with its vast amounts of citizens following rules...... ARISE WORLD CONCIOUSNESS..... The World has its own mind!

  • @sourcandy22 I am high as fuck and this just freaked me the fuck out. Shit just got real.

  • Whats the name of this song?

  • Quadruple its size. Then quadruple that. Then you will have a plane that is half the size of a 747. Do the same with the planes first flown at Kitty Hawk, and you will get the same thing, except that they will not be solar powered. Do I think that solar is the way to go? No. Hydrogen probably is though. Solar can be used to produce the Hydrogen.

  • bends almost like bird (wink)

  • Couldn't have picked better music. Captivating.

  • i understand its beautiful and all, but what is the practicality of this creation?

  • @5:35 it crashes

  • @Elliotvisualeffects half of that is exactly right - we do need to develop more efficient solar panels. but solar research is a completely different field to aerospace engineering, so it's not like the development of this aircraft is taking anything away from efforts to develop solar panels. What this project is doing is showing ways to make more efficient aircraft - an area which needs a huge amount of work. So this is a huge, and very important, step forward for aviation technology.

  • why does it keep bending?

  • If Sir Zeppelin could see that, he would be insanely jealous...

  • @ChrisLuxembourg I'm insanely jealous!

  • what a

    waste of

    our money

  • @AUQUA123

    How is it waste?

  • This is sweet, I mean it look kinda weird but it still cool for me. :)

  • soundtrack please

  • Im not sure if I should laugh or be amazed.

  • If you thought this was awesome they made a solar powered plane carring 1 passinger and a pilot and made a 24 hour test run

  • THIS is really amazing and it would be good to see in the future that with passanger aircraft it then too could have this technology and be able to fly very long distances

if you believe then you can achieve

    nothing is impossible!

  • @MYBIGKINDHEART try becoming a billionair over night lol

  • superb! what is the name of the soundtrack, love that so much! :)

  • WOOW !

  • Imagine 2000 of these over Afghanistan at all times with a laser that zaps the enemy. Range is equal to build quality, you only need to bring them down if something is wrong with them.

  • @SuperRegisteredUser

You are fucking retarded and in fact, you should stop posting.

  • @Szgerle Holy fuck! A furfag towelhead? Go back to your cave you dirty terrorist. Also, when back in your cave, please kill yourself.

  • @SuperRegisteredUser

Harsh words coming from an amerifat.

You are that special type of moron who supports spending billions of dollars ona foreign invasion which ultimately fails?

  • @Szgerle I'm not american and I didn't support the invasion of either Afghanistan or Iraq, but now that the west is there we have to do what we can.

You are probably some pseudo fascist european asshole who would love to suck some taliban cock.

Also; why have you not kill yourself yet?

  • @SuperRegisteredUser

How fascism is related to the taliban and muslims as generaL?

  • @Szgerle Muslims want to establish nations based on sharia law. On of the main parts of sharia is that it must be above other "man made" laws and thus cannot be changed in any way. This is one definition of fascism.

Muslims that do not want this are generally secularized, the Taliban are not secularized.

  • @SuperRegisteredUser

"Muslims want to establish nations based on sharia law. On of the main parts of sharia is that it must be above other "man made" laws and thus cannot be changed in any way. This is one definition of fascism."

Nope. Thats not fascism. Do you even know what fascism is or you just use it as a general "evil" word.

  • @Szgerle I am well aware that there is an ideology that is called "fascism" but the word have come to represent something else. Fascism is often used as a synonym to harshly enforced rules.

This is no different from the fact that the words "socialist", "liberalism" and "anarchism" have come to mean something other than intended. I suggest you get over it and stop crying.

  • @SuperRegisteredUser

    No. Just no.

If you dont know what a word means dont use it. Just because american politicians need buzzwords to garner votes it doesnt mean intelligent people will have to throw their brains and dictionaries out of the window and bow to the new "meaning" of the word.

Actually, distorting the political meanings of words suddenly reminded me to 1984 where the Party wants to destroy the ability of the people to express their malcontent through merging words together.

  • @Szgerle I'm not american and yes, I have read 1984 and no it's not the same. All words change meaning over time by a natural process between people. What was the point in 1984 was that the party changed the meaning from the top down, rather than the other way around.

For example, it was social democrats that started calling themselves liberals in USA and some parts of Europe, not some conspiracy by politicians to prevent people from seeing the truth.

  • @SuperRegisteredUser

"What was the point in 1984 was that the party changed the meaning from the top down, rather than the other way around."

No. See what american parties like to smear eachother, nazi, communist, socialist, liberal, islamofascist etc.

Also, european politics and naming conventions are vastly different from american but it doesnt change the meaning of basic political terms.

  • Comment removed

  • @SuperRegisteredUser

"Orwelian renaming is not about that at all. It's about making it impossible to question the status quo by changing the language. "

And they are doing that. Washing together phrases and ideologies and blurring the differences between them.

  • UFO technology

  • Also it is actually being funded as a possible "satelite". It has sucessfully broadcast HDTV for example. Not only would it be signifigantly cheaper than a satelite but it would provide around 1000 times the acess capacity of a geostationary satellite. Alternativly it provdes the same signal as an equivolant 12mile tall transmitter tower at under 1/10000th of the engery.

That is why it is being funded

  • what makes it bend the way it does? air pressure?

  • @eveDjakku It bends like that as part of the control of the aircraft, by bending into a "U" shape it allows the pitch to be altered ie, by appling more power to the central engines which causes the aircraft to begin to ascend, it can also be used to descend by reducing power to the central engines and increasing it to the outside engines.

  • These things are needed to prove to thick headed, tough acting, manly redneck nay-sayers that it can be done.........

  • For those who say that is a waste of money, This type of project allows us to work on advanced technologies that will serve you in the life of every day

  • What song is this?

  • THAT is a weird design. What's its purpose? Extended high atmospheric flight/monitoring?

  • Im doing a project on helios prototype and i have just started, anyone know where i can obtain official information apart from NASA. Journals would be great

  • Woah. It's a FF airship.

  • god that thing is slow

  • That's pretty beautiful. Technology is advancing by leaps and bounds, and I hope this piece evolves into something great that can be used by every plane on Earth.

  • this is ancient stuff. nasa is fake and purposely misleading, they will never help us and they will continue to lie

  • Haha you guys think this is just for recon and military use?! It's to prove that we can use something other than fuel to make an airplane operate and fly..... Dumbasses

  • I've seen this plane on Modern Marvel, this plane fly up to 100,000 Feet high, they used this to study birds, and this plane would be a great sattlelight.

  • Going to the moon when the space race happen then evloved into arms race in the cold war is not as useless as this junk.

  • But military is gonna evloved that predator recon so this is a piece of crap

  • Usless piece of crap. Dose nothing

can be use as a recon, but military is using the predator.

  • @noob2top3210 its not about finding a use its about experimenting with knew materils and finding out if u can make these things work. Then for future references they may make military or personal carrying systems out of it.

  • F*ck WMG

  • that is awsome because about im learning about planes

  • idk how to put this....ok i do...

    FAKE AND GAY!

  • @zachery1123 its not fake look it up on wikipedia..

  • This would be very useful in Mars missions, probably to explore over canyons.

  • @dinmagic i dont know if you are aware of the atmosphere situation on mars, but i dont think this would work so well there

  • So how about a passenger jet :)

  • Maybe they can get one of those things up in space. The closer the solar plane gets to the sun. The more electricity it will get. They should do a rocket solar plane to get up in space.

  • Motor life will be an issue. But I suppose when it needs maintenance, you could fly a replacement one up before you drop the incumbent for service.

  • it looks like a light breeze would rip this thing apart or just bring it crashing down

  • @WtFmAtE12244

    Thats what happenned.

  • now have it carry a CO2 scrubber, and have it fly in the upper atmosphere and weve stopped Golbal Warming

  • its a UFO omg run! lol

  • -.-

  • Paul MacCready designed this plane, its aimed to take the place of communication satellites. so basically it goes up around 10 miles. and stays there indefinitely travelling so slow that it stays roughly in the same place. This is a major advantage, as to get a satellite to stay in the same place it has to be geostationary orbit at aprox 22,000 miles up. and HAS to go around the equator. vs this which can be anywhere and only 10 miles up. and i think its beautiful.

  • It's a nice idea but man is that an ugly ass plane :p

  • where duz the pilot sit

  • @aell0111 i THINK its remote controlled like a uav

  • The plane it pilotless. It flies on a preset flight path programmed before the flight.

  • top speep of about 30 mph

  • lololz it looks like it can barely hold its own weight

  • surely it has to land at night? ever heard of something called a battery?

  • ever head of something called solar power?

Charge the batteries during the day and then use them during the night! Duh lol

  • u youtubers are idiots, surely it has to land at night

  • no i dont think it has crashed ...i dont think they would put all that effort int something this beutiful for it to crash i think it may well be still u.p there and may be up there for decades to come

  • lol.89 years later it passes by your house(hey isnt that the wierd plane they launched in 2006).(yea).(kool).(i knoe).(land damit land)

  • no we need a plane that runs on something cols instead of heat because if you go to alaska with a sun or heat powered plane your fucking sqewed!!!

  • Think about it, all youd ultimately need is to imbed solar panels on top of the wings of the plane, brilliant! Not to mention the battery but still, it would be more space efficient since all the space the gas tank takes up is reduced to a much smaller battery.

  • Little practical use? What if commercial jets become solar powered. Each commercial jet uses about 3600 gallons of fuel an hour. Sounds potentially useful especially since this is only a prototype.

  • So was the first airplane to fly or the first car to drive.

  • @TCatBRproductions The only problem is finding an efficient enough and powerful enough motor for this to actually work well. The other big problem is to find a good spot to put cargo!

  • @TCatBRproductions not to forget that solar panels arent even at their full potential, they can only absorb a little of th suns power. if they can be made to be more suffecient you need less space for more power

  • It's a big very expensive toy with very little practical use.

  • Was Falcon Heine on board?

  • helios means ''SUN'' in Greek ...

  • Pretty awesome, but Christ! Hangar rent would be atrocious!

  • This plane is proof of concept but rather inefficient, It may help as weather plane or panels can be used in extraterrestrial missions, But I strongly insist that solar energy isn't the way to go.... We need to find a certain reaction battery that can supply us with a plentiful amount of energy disposable or rechargeable doesn't matter....

  • Some strongly insisted that humans could not survive 30 MpH.

  • @kailuafrog

And some strongly insisted that the world could end... In fact there are some many, that if they were true, we just are living million of years after them... There are many many alternatives to electricity to power big things and that's not today fuels...

  • well there is one.....the jet stream

  • might be the only way to fly on the future with the prices of planes fuel and stuff.

  • this looks soo cool :D

  • Don't forget to wear your parachute, nevermind this aircraft can't carry a passenger.

  • Das Teil fliegt ja echt hammer langsam!! Erstaunlich, dass es in der Luft bleibt!! Ist aber sehr sehr geil!

  • 1:59 those folding of wings. it looked so beautiful!!

  • Again great experiment but unrealistic. When will we see the minds behind these ideas do something that really matters. What in the world is the point of this multi million dollar toy? Did I see NASA on the tail wing??? Yep I did se NASA... what this thing cost us... comon people... get real would ya!

  • You don't understand that the research involved here means new technologies and methods will have to be engineered, and that quite possibly, those new technologies and methods will benefit you and many others in the future. That's why these projects exist.

  • @TheZefMan so future planes will have 2 million propellers?

  • @TheZefMan Ye its cool and when its advanced enough we will be flying commercially in a plane that can turn from a smilie face into a frowny face and then back again some day =/

  • @TheZefMan

A fascinating achievement it is! But we will never know what innovations may have developed if the funds required to build Helios had remained in the hands of the original generator, the private sector. In general, private sector innovators get more value for their dollar. The book of private sector innovations from which we've derived benefit is an order of magnitude longer than the same book of public sector innovations. Still, Helios is extremely cool.

  • @NOLAMarathon2010 The idea of Helios is to create a UAV, for long-term surveillance, which can fly for months at a time, non-stop, at very high altitudes - up to 80,000 ft. NO other type of aircraft could accomplish such a mission, without expensive and dangerous mid-air refueling. Sonar is the ONLY answer, until we develop micro-nuclear power plants, which this video shows are unnecessary. See Wikipedia - search for Helios Prototype.

  • clouds

    OH SNAP

  • Hmmm... what's next? Wind powered aircraft?

  • just because it looks like it would be fun to fly around doesn't make it a toy, the reason it isn't a toy is because it provides valuable scientific data

  • u motherf****r b***h a** wh****

  • Engineering students have supposedly cracked a problem that'll take solar cell efficiency up to 50% from 15% nowadays. There's still a LOT to come from renewable energy.

  • y shuld we look 4 a new planet when we cant even take care of our own???

    ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

    go gurus / hippis!!!!

  • excellent, well said

  • what so we can fuck that place up too?

Priorities man. Think of the implications of something like this.

  • lol, "Getting us to mars"?.. When the shit hits the fan here do you really think they are going to send anyone in your family to another planet??? The only ones going are the politicians, scientists and their family.... So why the rush to spend billions of taxpayer's money???

  • the only reason why humanity is thinking of mars is cuz they fuck up earth, this might just prevent it, and no need going to red cold boring and every other way not good planet

  • lol.. our planet IS already fucked up... and guess which countries played a huge role in it.....

  • I would say USA ant that other country that didnt sined kyoto protocol.

    at least my country did

  • "our planet IS already fucked up"

No, it's not. Even if humanity would die this planet stays here... it's not going anywhere.

  • Looks like a flock of birds from a distance.

  • It's a Solar Powered flying Plank. Dead easy as long as you get the centre of gravity right, with loads of dihedral. I think it required the power of a couple of hairdriers to climb(and then more Solar power available above clouds and contrail 'spreadout) It could then loiter overnight on stored battery power, or track sunlight? Jet Aircraft Contrails are severely diminishing 'Blue Sky days. They look beautiful in the sun rise, but a hazy noon preventing Cumulus clouds forming, is dead boring!

  • Actually, it is useful as you can perform many functions of a satellite at a fraction of the cost.

  • nah, this can't fly very high

  • Unlike an air breathing engine, it can produce the same power at 100,000' as it can at sea level.

  • seen a specail on sci channel of this, its made for sci not so much spying.. hense why its nasa..

  • nasa's the best

  • NASA has recently discovered that owls actually try to help the craft stay airborne during the night.

  • @turnipbrain little owls or big owls?

  • lol, the green areoplane

  • Its an awesome design, a work of pure genius...an unbelievably inspiring fexible adaptive flying wing...how the hell does it flies so smoothly without a tail!!!

  • lol put a bit of string on the back of it ??

  • This in itself is not that useful, but it paves the way for other discoveries. Someone will never designe something brilliant right from teh start. This just proves that we can fly off solar power. As technology improves, energy conversion rate of solar panels, aerodynamics and weight of planes. This could prove to be brilliant, and fly potentially all day carrying more people. Running costs would be far lower as much of the cost of a plane is in its fuel.

  • Exactly...its a wonderful prototype on solar powered flying...a solid proof it can be done...

  • fuck that get a bazooka

  • wow thats cool.I a am working on a small rc solar car

  • unbelievably beautiful...especially because of the promise it brings.

If only NASA was used for more things like this that better the world, instead of other shadier things...war, spying, etc

  • war and spying enables us to be free to do things like this, but business must be taken care of first, then play time

  • ok ya thats gr8 and all but whats its purpose? can it carry any1 or is it just this flying mass?

  • thats so cool and PURE

  • THIS IS THE FUTURE....

  • this is now

  • NAME OF SONG?

  • Yes, this aircraft went on several day time test flights - problem was they launched the first passenger service as the worlds first overnight 27mph flight from New York to London and it crashed minutes after sunset - massive fail (the bloke who's singing on this video was singing it live whilst testing the plane....and he was playing the piano....whilst shining a torch onto the wings to gain speed) NICE

  • ohhh, it looks so beautiful

  • that must be amazingly silent in the sky.

  • Go to Youtube Solar energy breakthrough imagine what this is going to do with aircraft design.

  • do any of you know that this project failed after it went too fast, it literally broke up in the air and crashed into the pacific ocean?

the thing is this prototype can only go under 27Mph or it will crash

  • People calm down this is just an experimental aircraft! Experimenting with the possibility of creating a non polluting aircraft! And i actually like this idea and this craft! It's actually suprising that a craft like this actually broke a world record! Next step: "Solar Impulse"

  • When operating, it is almost non polluting.

But just think about how many hundred tons of water and chemicals are used in the batteries and heat converters production line...

Unfortunately, solar power is all but non polluting

    Regards

  • and as a alternative, what will we use in 100 years?

  • well, I really don't know...

nuclear power would be the best, as it last a long time... but we don't really master it yet enough to put it in everybody's car and it still produce radioactive waste

AT THE MOMENT solar is good when operating, but the production is terribly polluting

IMHO the biggest concern is not the energy but the way we use it (i.e. I go to work were you live and you go to work were I live, we both use a car, and alone even it it seats seven = 100% pure waste)

  • For fission nuclear power, you need a lot of shielding to protect you from the radioactivity produced by the fuel and reactor. This is provided by dense materials - Typically lead, concrete. Thus - NOT suitable for your car let alone your aeroplane.

IMHO you don't know what your talking about??

  • Fission power is not a good option, but fusion is gaining support. Unfortunately it is FAR from feasable at the moment. Because it is held within a magnetic field, it may become eventually possible to use this in smaller appliances. If you are more interested in nuclear fusion technology look up ITER. It is a current project where they have just managed to make input energy break even with output. It is a long way away but eventually a good option.

  • when we accomplish that we can power the world with water.

  • What is the main task of this thing?...I still don't get it. =P

Anyway...what's the name of this song? It's perfect 4 this video ^_^

  • good idea, only problem is that it will crash as soon as the sun goes out

  • and how much of our tax money went into this thing that we will never use
