well, i guess then you failed as well. solar panels are dark, often close to black, but dont produce heat, at least far less compared to a normal surface of the same darkness. the difference is what goes into electricity. the perfect solar panel is black. if a panel doesnt produce energy, (unconnected/broken) it will get hot in sunlight, while a working panel stays quite cool. if a working panel would heat up and not stay cooler, where would the energy come from?

Quadruple its size. Then quadruple that. Then you will have a plane that is half the size of a 747. Do the same with the planes first flown at Kitty Hawk, and you will get the same thing, except that they will not be solar powered. Do I think that solar is the way to go? No. Hydrogen probably is though. Solar can be used to produce the Hydrogen.
@Elliotvisualeffects half of that is exactly right - we do need to develop more efficient solar panels. but solar research is a completely different field to aerospace engineering, so it's not like the development of this aircraft is taking anything away from efforts to develop solar panels. What this project is doing is showing ways to make more efficient aircraft - an area which needs a huge amount of work. So this is a huge, and very important, step forward for aviation technology.
THIS is really amazing and it would be good to see in the future that with passanger aircraft it then too could have this technology and be able to fly very long distances

@eveDjakku It bends like that as part of the control of the aircraft, by bending into a "U" shape it allows the pitch to be altered ie, by appling more power to the central engines which causes the aircraft to begin to ascend, it can also be used to descend by reducing power to the central engines and increasing it to the outside engines.

Little practical use? What if commercial jets become solar powered. Each commercial jet uses about 3600 gallons of fuel an hour. Sounds potentially useful especially since this is only a prototype.
@TCatBRproductions The only problem is finding an efficient enough and powerful enough motor for this to actually work well. The other big problem is to find a good spot to put cargo!
@TCatBRproductions not to forget that solar panels arent even at their full potential, they can only absorb a little of th suns power. if they can be made to be more suffecient you need less space for more power

You don't understand that the research involved here means new technologies and methods will have to be engineered, and that quite possibly, those new technologies and methods will benefit you and many others in the future. That's why these projects exist.
@TheZefMan Ye its cool and when its advanced enough we will be flying commercially in a plane that can turn from a smilie face into a frowny face and then back again some day =/
A fascinating achievement it is! But we will never know what innovations may have developed if the funds required to build Helios had remained in the hands of the original generator, the private sector. In general, private sector innovators get more value for their dollar. The book of private sector innovations from which we've derived benefit is an order of magnitude longer than the same book of public sector innovations. Still, Helios is extremely cool.
@NOLAMarathon2010 The idea of Helios is to create a UAV, for long-term surveillance, which can fly for months at a time, non-stop, at very high altitudes - up to 80,000 ft. NO other type of aircraft could accomplish such a mission, without expensive and dangerous mid-air refueling. Sonar is the ONLY answer, until we develop micro-nuclear power plants, which this video shows are unnecessary. See Wikipedia - search for Helios Prototype.
just because it looks like it would be fun to fly around doesn't make it a toy, the reason it isn't a toy is because it provides valuable scientific data
Engineering students have supposedly cracked a problem that'll take solar cell efficiency up to 50% from 15% nowadays. There's still a LOT to come from renewable energy.
lol, "Getting us to mars"?.. When the shit hits the fan here do you really think they are going to send anyone in your family to another planet??? The only ones going are the politicians, scientists and their family.... So why the rush to spend billions of taxpayer's money???
the only reason why humanity is thinking of mars is cuz they fuck up earth, this might just prevent it, and no need going to red cold boring and every other way not good planet
It's a Solar Powered flying Plank. Dead easy as long as you get the centre of gravity right, with loads of dihedral. I think it required the power of a couple of hairdriers to climb(and then more Solar power available above clouds and contrail 'spreadout) It could then loiter overnight on stored battery power, or track sunlight? Jet Aircraft Contrails are severely diminishing 'Blue Sky days. They look beautiful in the sun rise, but a hazy noon preventing Cumulus clouds forming, is dead boring!
Its an awesome design, a work of pure genius...an unbelievably inspiring fexible adaptive flying wing...how the hell does it flies so smoothly without a tail!!!
This in itself is not that useful, but it paves the way for other discoveries. Someone will never designe something brilliant right from teh start. This just proves that we can fly off solar power. As technology improves, energy conversion rate of solar panels, aerodynamics and weight of planes. This could prove to be brilliant, and fly potentially all day carrying more people. Running costs would be far lower as much of the cost of a plane is in its fuel.
Yes, this aircraft went on several day time test flights - problem was they launched the first passenger service as the worlds first overnight 27mph flight from New York to London and it crashed minutes after sunset - massive fail (the bloke who's singing on this video was singing it live whilst testing the plane....and he was playing the piano....whilst shining a torch onto the wings to gain speed) NICE
People calm down this is just an experimental aircraft! Experimenting with the possibility of creating a non polluting aircraft! And i actually like this idea and this craft! It's actually suprising that a craft like this actually broke a world record! Next step: "Solar Impulse"
nuclear power would be the best, as it last a long time... but we don't really master it yet enough to put it in everybody's car and it still produce radioactive waste
AT THE MOMENT solar is good when operating, but the production is terribly polluting
IMHO the biggest concern is not the energy but the way we use it (i.e. I go to work were you live and you go to work were I live, we both use a car, and alone even it it seats seven = 100% pure waste)
For fission nuclear power, you need a lot of shielding to protect you from the radioactivity produced by the fuel and reactor. This is provided by dense materials - Typically lead, concrete. Thus - NOT suitable for your car let alone your aeroplane.
Fission power is not a good option, but fusion is gaining support. Unfortunately it is FAR from feasable at the moment. Because it is held within a magnetic field, it may become eventually possible to use this in smaller appliances. If you are more interested in nuclear fusion technology look up ITER. It is a current project where they have just managed to make input energy break even with output. It is a long way away but eventually a good option.

You don't understand that the research involved here means new technologies and methods will have to be engineered, and that quite possibly, those new technologies and methods will benefit you and many others in the future. That's why these projects exist.

@TheZefMan so future planes will have 2 million propellers?
zachery1123 1 year ago
@TheZefMan Ye its cool and when its advanced enough we will be flying commercially in a plane that can turn from a smilie face into a frowny face and then back again some day =/
RandomAlexLol 1 year ago
@TheZefMan
NOLAMarathon2010 1 year ago
@NOLAMarathon2010 The idea of Helios is to create a UAV, for long-term surveillance, which can fly for months at a time, non-stop, at very high altitudes - up to 80,000 ft. NO other type of aircraft could accomplish such a mission, without expensive and dangerous mid-air refueling. Sonar is the ONLY answer, until we develop micro-nuclear power plants, which this video shows are unnecessary. See Wikipedia - search for Helios Prototype.

pretty cool, but just a toy.

just because it looks like it would be fun to fly around doesn't make it a toy, the reason it isn't a toy is because it provides valuable scientific data

Engineering students have supposedly cracked a problem that'll take solar cell efficiency up to 50% from 15% nowadays. There's still a LOT to come from renewable energy.

And WHAT THE HELL is NASA doing spending bucks on a flock of solar seagulls?! They should be getting us to damn Mars, already.
bonham19 2 years ago
what so we can fuck that place up too?
Priorities man. Think of the implications of something like this.
Epblueyes 2 years ago
lol, "Getting us to mars"?.. When the shit hits the fan here do you really think they are going to send anyone in your family to another planet??? The only ones going are the politicians, scientists and their family.... So why the rush to spend billions of taxpayer's money???
TempleTXLive 2 years ago 2
the only reason why humanity is thinking of mars is cuz they fuck up earth, this might just prevent it, and no need going to red cold boring and every other way not good planet

No, it's not. Even if humanity would die this planet stays here... it's not going anywhere.

They look beautiful in the sun rise, but a hazy noon preventing Cumulus clouds forming, is dead boring!
doffincodger 2 years ago
Actually, it is useful as you can perform many functions of a satellite at a fraction of the cost.

nah, this can't fly very high

Unlike an air breathing engine, it can produce the same power at 100,000' as it can at sea level.

lol put a bit of string on the back of it ??
liamurphy62 3 years ago
This in itself is not that useful, but it paves the way for other discoveries. Someone will never designe something brilliant right from teh start. This just proves that we can fly off solar power. As technology improves, energy conversion rate of solar panels, aerodynamics and weight of planes. This could prove to be brilliant, and fly potentially all day carrying more people. Running costs would be far lower as much of the cost of a plane is in its fuel.
Ricki145 3 years ago
Exactly...its a wonderful prototype on solar powered flying...a solid proof it can be done...

Yes, this aircraft went on several day time test flights - problem was they launched the first passenger service as the worlds first overnight 27mph flight from New York to London and it crashed minutes after sunset - massive fail (the bloke who's singing on this video was singing it live whilst testing the plane....and he was playing the piano....whilst shining a torch onto the wings to gain speed) NICE

billsflyingstuff 3 years ago
do any of you know that this project failed after it went too fast, it literally broke up in the air and crashed into the pacific ocean?
the thing is this prototype can only go under 27Mph or it will crash
ChallisBarnes 3 years ago
People calm down this is just an experimental aircraft! Experimenting with the possibility of creating a non polluting aircraft! And i actually like this idea and this craft! It's actually suprising that a craft like this actually broke a world record! Next step: "Solar Impulse"
Attilaakiraly 3 years ago
When operating, it is almost non polluting.
But just think about how many hundred tons of water and chemicals are used in the batteries and heat converters production line...
Unfortunately, solar power is all but non polluting

OCMElPolo 3 years ago
and as a alternative, what will we use in 100 years?
Paulsey88 3 years ago
well, I really don't know...
nuclear power would be the best, as it last a long time... but we don't really master it yet enough to put it in everybody's car and it still produce radioactive waste
AT THE MOMENT solar is good when operating, but the production is terribly polluting
IMHO the biggest concern is not the energy but the way we use it (i.e. I go to work were you live and you go to work were I live, we both use a car, and alone even it it seats seven = 100% pure waste)
OCMElPolo 3 years ago
For fission nuclear power, you need a lot of shielding to protect you from the radioactivity produced by the fuel and reactor. This is provided by dense materials - Typically lead, concrete. Thus - NOT suitable for your car let alone your aeroplane.
IMHO you don't know what your talking about??
hadesbearer 3 years ago
Fission power is not a good option, but fusion is gaining support. Unfortunately it is FAR from feasable at the moment. Because it is held within a magnetic field, it may become eventually possible to use this in smaller appliances. If you are more interested in nuclear fusion technology look up ITER. It is a current project where they have just managed to make input energy break even with output. It is a long way away but eventually a good option.
