This is a great version of the original. So the story goes: Billy gets his ass killed and his girlfriend hooks up with another guy. The End. Was it worth it Billy? Same question to all those guys that sign up in the U.S. military to fight for the New World Order. When you get killed and your wife marries another guy and your kids grow up calling this guy "daddy", the question is: was it worth it?
I quite like this 70's song in an 80's style, but why didn't they just give it to someone like Sonia or Sinitta to cover? That would have been even more wonderfully sureal!
Mostly those build up a sense of expectation that the actual intro destroys. Some songs are better without the build-up. It's like singing very slowly. It just gets painful.
Classic song, written by Pete Callendar and Mitch Murray; the original version of "Billy Don't Be A Hero" topped the charts in March 1974 ...... and deservedly so. That said, I must admit that I don't rate this [considerably more recent] version of the song particularly highly! It is not a patch on the '74 original (as the good Tony Blackburn might say)!
The Bo Donaldson version is the only one I'm familiar with. I thought it was as bad as it gets. This is even worse. These guys all should have been shot along with Billy. Better yet, burn them at the stake! This is hideous!
Not the original Version! Search -- Paper Lace - Billy don't be a Hero 1974 -- This is a Remix or something.. Tried to make it an 80's song I guess. Not my preference for sure.. Give me the original please. 8-)
One of the few songs I like the remake of better than the original version. Most songs I like the original best, but this one, well, I think I prefer Bo Donaldson.
@Potts132 Actually the Confederacy did not have manufacturing corporations like the Union. So the Confederacy uniform colors had a variety of colors from tan to light blue-while the Union had Dark Blue
@oohaflyingwatermelon This is the original song by Paper Lace, first released in the U.K.. Paper Lace was going to release the song in the U.S. but before the could, Bo Donaldson released the song here in the U.S., so I guess he gets a lot of credit for the song...
Based on the video's caption, I thought this was going to be a video of the original Paper Lace version from 1974, which I love. Obviously it's not, although from what I can tell, it's still members of Paper Lace with a remixed & updated version. Not real keen on this version. I think maybe LuigiPaluzzi needs to update the description to include who did this version and when it was done, and that should pacify everyone.
I find that I like this song just a tad better than the version released here in the States, and it's not just the fact that it's a novelty to me to hear it done in such an upbeat tempo. Something just tweaks it done this way.
this version is OK but i like the other version better :) . although,Even though this was my fav song since I was at least 4,I never saw the video until now. and thats at least an 8 year distance!
I was in the video. One of the soldiers. I was a dancer in the saloon and did shootouts etc. Cowboys and indians for a job.................can't beat it..!!!
Paper Lace was first by a few months, I believe. Interestingly, Paper Lace's version was No. 1 in the U.K., but bombed in the U.S., and vice-versa for Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods.
Obviously, it was the Civil War. References to the boy's in blue (union soldiers), horses, and how Billy just stpped away from his girl to "join the line." Paper Lace must have been into history. I am reffering to there other hit The Night Chigago died." Fun Stuff.
Coming from someone who knows the FACTS about this video and track I would like to clear this up as there is a bit of commotion in these comments and its quite ridiculous (and joke!).
This is a version done in Nottingham, in the 80's with some of the original band members from 1974 when the originally was a hit. Yes it was filmed in American Adventure and yes it has got an 80's sound to it. Which is because it was made in the 80's!!!! Great Original Track and Great Remix.
this is the first time I have seen this video I realy enjoyed it. the song its self brings back some great memorys butlins pwhelli 86/87 you were always a gentleman!
The 80's have a lot to answer for : Electronic Drum Machines, the proliferation of Synths, Overdubs, Remixes, the beginning of the trend of awful covers of classics, Mullet Hair styles and that is not even counting the clothes.
i was curious so i looked this up. Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods AND Paper Lace both released this 1974 (2 vastly different versions) PL hit #1 in the UK in Mar 74, Bo Donaldson however released it first it first in the US and hit #1 in Jun 74, Paper Laces release topped out at 95 in the US (yeah no wonder! it sucks!) so really everyones right about which is the orginal, because it was released at the same time (except ant67 who said 72, he's just plain wrong)
This is not the original UK Paper Lace Version that was released in '74. It was also a hit in Australia where I am from and I still have the EMI 45 rpm of it. It sounds completely different to this which is clearly an enhanced 80's mix.
five days later, this is kinda growing on me...who did this remix version anyway????? sounds nothing like either 70's version from paper lace or bo and the heywoods
Paper Lace were formed in 1969 in Nottingham, England. They won a UK TV talent contest in 1974 and had a number 1 chart hit with this in the UK in March of that year. It only reached number 96 in the US. Paper Lace did though have a number 1 in US with "The Night Chicago Died".
Oh My god I posted awhile ago, but as Iam now checking back this "Remix" is still here. Who is responsible for destroying a favorite childhood memory!! Is this the fault of the band itself? are they promoting a new version? doesnt anyone out there have the ORIGINAL to repost??
This song was originally recorded by BO DONALDSON AND THE HAYWOODS not Paper Lace. IF you are going to badly cover a song at least get the orginal artist correct.
