first heard this at Mariposa Folk Festival on Toronto Island in summer 1968...also Joni Mitchell, Stompin Tom Conners and a bunch of others...wish I'd recorded it so I could remember. Dylan was there but did not play.
@notaphaser -- John Prine's 2nd wife -- can type John Prine & wife to pull up "Speed" - a song she supposedly inspired -- as well as "I wish you all the best"
In answer to the question about who the bass player is -- that's John Prine's second wife, Rachel Peer Prine. I think they were married for 6-7 years during the 1980s. I love ALL of JP's songs, but this is a favorite.
@banjostead dont feel bad if you couldnt find the name of this song, this has nothing to do with the words "spanish pipedream" well the dream part makes a little sense, but i started clicking radom john prine videos until i found it
this song was my mantra

Only John Prine can make a song about an army deserter and a commercial sex worker fleeing the country joyful and uplifting.

Banjo...excellent post...Ireland was never the same after JP hit the Isle!...Racheal! It would be hard to wake up if we were JP dreaming about her.

didn't the avett brothers do a version of this song?
m5c2h 1 year ago
@m5c2h Yes! As much as I adore the Avett's, their version doesn't live up to Mr. Prine's.

Not on an CD, maybe live...maybe. I've heard them do "I'll fly away"
