When do you add the fragrances/essential oils? Do you do that when you mix the oils or near the end just before soap formation starts when mixing lye water with oils?
@TheAnswerJan Thanks! I was scared to too at first until I did more research and saw that everyone did it and didn't have a problem. I had my husband mix my first batch and then I did the rest. As long as you're careful, know what you are doing and stick to your recipes it's a lot of fun. :o)
Hi! I absolutely love, love, love your video!!! and if your plan was to get me interested in actually starting soap making then I have to tell you it worked!!! this tut was so detailed even a dummy would be soap making by the end of it! the hints and links to other helpful videos was just great, good job:-)
@Jeannette84 It won't be like melt & pour soap.. instead if you grated it and melted it down its called "hand milling" or "milling" soap. But you won't be able to just melt it down in the microwave like M&P soap. It's a process of using a double boiler, etc. If you are just wanting to add color to it, you can do it when the mixture reaches trace. Colors is a whole 'nother world-- make sure you read up on what colorants are safe to use in cold process soap. Have fun!
@TheCraftyGemini No sabia que tu hablabas español. Recien pase a ver un videos tuyo de costura en español. Una preguntita, tu sabes como se puede hacer el jabon liquido casero? Muchas Gracias!
hey! this sound great using olive oil can i use only oliver oil? and is this good for hair? since is olive oil? and where do i buy the drain what? drain opener? or the lye? lol
@eLoveCR7 It doesn't evaporate per se... it's more like it cooks out of it. As the chemical reaction occurs you lose the lye and you end up with soap. But there will be no lye left in your soap... if you did everything correctly.
@eLoveCR7 Hi. My recipe won't work just for olive oil. Every recipe has to be entered into a lye calculator to make sure you know the correct amount of lye to use in each recipe. If you change the oils, you are changing the recipe. The lye can be purchased at Ace hardware stores or online.
@mwshelle Either your measurements were off or you didn't blend it until it reached trace. As far as fixing it, you could try putting it in a crock pot and and cooking it up until all the lye is cooked out of it ( a few hours) and make hot processed soap instead. Once the lye is cooked out you can just scoop it into a mold to cool. Otherwise, I would toss it out. If the soap is soft chances are the lye is active and the measurements were off. Hope that helps.
@TheCraftyGemini Hi There Thank you so much.i tried out your awesome Idea to put my soap in the Crockpot and it turned out really well thank you so much for the advice.I'm very happy now. i tripled your mix thats what i did every thing was dune the same way as you maybe that was not a good thing to do .but practice makes perfect .Thanks again.
@mwshelle Yea, that was definitely the problem. You cannot adjust recipes by just tripling them. Make sure the lye is not active in that soap batch before you actually use it on your body. Some people do a zap test by putting a little bit of it on their tongue and if you feel a zap then the lye is still active. Good luck!
@mwshelle Also, make sure you are using a digital scale that measures to 0.1 ounces and you need a stick blender for this recipe. If when you were mixing you could still see the oil separate from the lye mixture it was not ready.. you need to mix until you reach a medium trace.
I'm helping a poor village in Orisssa,India to make just a plain soap. What is the proportion of lye to oil to make bigger quantity e.g. 40gal at a time? We have palm and coconut oil etc. Do I add anything else, or is that adequate for a soap? How can I speed the curing for soap just used to keep people clean. Should anything be added to make antiseptic or antibacterial soap? We appreciate advice for our above humanitarian project. Thanks, Bob Chalice
@bobWsterguy Sorry I can't be of much help since I am not a soapmaking expert. I only make small batches for my family's use. Good luck with your efforts.
@bobWsterguy As a new soap maker it isn't wise to start making soap at such large quantities. Large batches can be difficult. Always use a soap calculator to get the right amount of lye crystals and water to your portion of oils, since different oils need more or less lye to saponify. Correct use of soap usually is enough for basic antibacterial use, although you can add essential oils with those properties to help.
@vickijd22 hahaha..awesome! Yea, I did research for a few months and decided on this one. It's amazing and I mostly just use the 18-55mm lens that came in the kit so nothing fancy is needed. Hope you love yours as much as I do mine. :o)
@TheCraftyGemini I'm sure I will totally love it. I am a complete camera junkie! I have been waiting to find the right dSLR, but seeing is believing and your vids look very sharp, like you had a camera crew! I also read many reviews and they were all great. I have a small home based embroidery business and I'm hoping to be able to do a better job at photographing my finished items for my website. Great job on the tuts! Keep 'em coming!
Hi, I'm a new subscriber to your channel and have been enjoying your videos. Just wondering what type of camera you use for your videos, they always look so crisp and clear!
@piccolo3431 Definitely not. I don't use ANY of the supplies I use for soapmaking for anything else... especially not food. That's why I label my supplies.
@frankiebianco This method of soapmaking has been used for thousands of years. If you read the label of any bar you can buy in the store you will see it does not say the word "soap" anywhere. Instead they say "beauty bar" or "moisturizing bar" because it is not real soap so they can't label it as such. Instead, THOSE bars often contain real toxic chemicals that your skin absorbs. I prefer to have complete control over what is in my soap. Which I think is smart.
@crazyGELmonster Definitely! That's called hand-milled soap. But you have to make sure you are starting with a REAL bar of soap not the stuff you buy at the store. If you look carefully you'll see that the word "soap" is nowhere on the package.... because they are not actual soap. At some health food stores you can buy real soap. Do a youtube search for hand milled soap to learn more. Hope this helps!
i don't understand :S did you heat the lye and water mixture or the water was already hot? or just by mixing them they get hot that much? if so i'm really scared of soap :S
@cupcakeYT Not really.. It's all chemistry. The lye starts off as a caustic substance but in the soapmaking process it completely disappears because of the chemical reactions. It's the only way to get soap. And homemade soap is a lot milder on the skin than the store bought stuff.
@TheSuperIdentity Soap can be made from all different kinds of oils from just one like olive oil (to make castile soap) to 10 different oils if you wanted to. However, each recipe formula is different. You CANNOT replace oils in my recipe with other types because each oil requires a different amount of lye to saponify (or turn in to soap). You need to run your oils & measurements into an online lye calculator to be sure how much lye that formula requires.
@TheSuperIdentity Because of the chemical process of saponification when the final soap is finished there is no lye left in the soap. You can do some research on it and see that you cannot make any kind of soap without it. In the process glycerin is created and depending on the moisturizing levels of the oils you use handmade soap is more mild & moisturizing than store bought soap.
So this is not Organic soap then with the Lye stuff??? Thats really in soap? I would think that harsh of a chemical (that requires a mask & googles) would end up severly irritating the skin ??
@715brandy It's not really referred to as organic because it requires lye. But some people say organic to refer to the other ingredients (oils, colorants, scents) they use in the soap. There is no way to make soap without lye. It's a chemical process that occurs so when you end up with the actual soap there is no lye in it. It's gone during the soapmaking process. Feel free to do some research on the history and process of making soap.
@nekonannan Yea. Just be mindful that some fragrances can accelerate trace so you need to work quickly with the mixture and get it in the mold before it gets too thick to pour, etc.
@cmorenos That can happen when you don't reach "trace" in the mixing step. Are you using a stick blender like I show in the video? If not, you can stir for hours with a spoon and will not get trace. It's very important to have that stick blender and to mix long enough until all oils are incorporated in lye/water mixture. If the oil is on top it will not turn into soap and the lye is still active and can burn you if touched. I would throw that batch away.
Wow woman, I've just discovered your vids and app and I must say - You Rock! I gotta find me some women friends like you - quick and talented. Thank you so much for the gifts you're giving us all. Are you doing your own video editing too? And the iPad app??
@mariameaghan123 I have not tried to add food coloring so I couldn't tell you. I know there are dozens of different ways to add color to your soap. I would recommend you do some research on that subject because I know the curing process of cold process soapmaking affects different colorants in different ways. For example, the colors may fade or darken after the curing process so you may or may not end up with the color you thought you were gonna get. Good luck!
@truly0phinoy I do it this way because I find that it all works out better for me as far as the final soap product when the mixtures are close in temp. Feel free to do some additional research and experimentation. Good luck!
@TheCraftyGemini And one more thing.. is the soap gonna get hard if we will just leave it in room temp without doing anything? our first try was a little failure...
@truly0phinoy The soap does get hard even if you leave it at room temp. All I do is cover it and leave it like I show in the video. You have to make sure your recipe is done to the T. You cannot substitute any other oils if you are following the recipe I show you in the video. Everything must be exact and be using 100% lye too. It's all chemistry. If something is off it will not work and can be dangerous if you have active lye in your ruined batch. Don't touch it with bare hands.
Hi Vanessa. I have been watching videos on cold process soap making and yours was the best. I appreciate you taking the time to do this video. It helped me feel like I can do this. You were very encouraging. Thanks so much.
Do you know at what point the lye becomes 'neutralized'? Is it after it is combined with the water, or maybe once combined with the oil mixture?? Thanks! Teresa M. ps is your new app going to expand to an iPad version soon? :-)
@50tmack The lye isn't really neutralized until the soap is fully cured. So it's still active when mixed with the water and when added to the oils. Many soapers claim after the 24 hours in the mold most of the lye (some claim about 90%) is neutralized and still requires the extra 4-6 weeks for the remaining 10%. I have no problem handling 24-hr soap with bare hands but you can wear gloves to be extra safe. You can download my app on your iPad now! Just search for it in the app store. :o)
@CakeILoveify I don't make my own soap because it's necessarily less expensive... but because I know what is in it and I have complete control of the ingredients. :o)
@MrsBooker100 There are actually no other ways to make soap without the use of the lye (or sodium hydroxide). There are ways to add your own ingredients and scents to soap that has already been made- called rebatching or using the popular melt & pour soap bases. Basically you can buy the soap base made already for you and then you add colors, fragrances, etc. That's one way to personalize your soaps without you personally having to deal with the lye. But it was used to create the base.
@BudgetMakeupBeauti Because every kind of oil/butter out there needs a different amount of lye to saponify (or turn into soap) you will need to run the new recipe containing peanut oil through a "lye calculator." When soapmaking you can NEVER just replace one oil in a recipe for another. This recipe was made specifically for canola and olive oil so the measurements reflect that. I recommend you do more research and do a google search for lye or soap calculator to plug in your oils of choice.
@BudgetMakeupBeauti No problem. Yea, there are some that are more popular than others. I found a site that has a peanut butter soap listed and uses some peanut oil here: soapnuts(dot)com/cp3.html Hope that helps some!
Now this I can do! Thank you so much for making it look so easy. I also appreciated the emphasis on safety - and I do love the way your whole channel gives everyone ways to go back to the basics of homemaking. Thanks for that!
@mwnjw No problem! Glad you enjoyed it! Remember to do some more research and check out the SoapQueenTV videos on lye safety so you can see how to clean up, etc. :o)
@595o I've never seen them in my local store but I would do more research and read about all the different kinds of coconut oil and what each provides in a bar of soap. :o)
@laydewlf Great tips! I have gallon jugs of coconut oil, castor oil and olive oil already! LOL I hope my viewers will do their homework and learn all there is to know about CP soapmaking. I know I am having a blast learning and experimenting. Thanks!
The salt balance has to be just right. So the best fat for making soap comes from humans..."Wait! What is this place?"The liposuction clinic!Ah ha!Pay dirt!Richest, creamiest, fat in the world,The fat of the land!""Tyler sold his soap for 20$ a bar to department stores, gawd knows what they charged?"This is the best soap!""Why thank you Susan."It was beautiful,we were selling RICH women their own fat asses back to them"-By the way...Be careful with the lye ladies!!!or just watch Fight Club!cheerio!
@lacageauxfolleslover You can get the lye at your local Ace Hardware or other hardware store. For the glass Pyrex measuring cup I have one specifically for soapmaking and another one for cooking. I'm not sure if it matters or not but I wouldn't risk it... just in case. Hope this helps.
@SmilezDuhBoss There is a lot of stuff that goes into how to color your soaps and what will work and not work. I recommend doing some research on the websites I listed in the video about coloring cold process soap. Thanks for watching!
I found this pretty interesting, if you've ever watched Fight Club they show you how to make soap and....... they also show you how to turn soap into bombs -.-
When do you add the fragrances/essential oils? Do you do that when you mix the oils or near the end just before soap formation starts when mixing lye water with oils?
My big project is finding pure NaOH in a store.

Can i add food coloring
mariameaghan123 5 months ago
@mariameaghan123 I have not tried to add food coloring so I couldn't tell you. I know there are dozens of different ways to add color to your soap. I would recommend you do some research on that subject because I know the curing process of cold process soapmaking affects different colorants in different ways. For example, the colors may fade or darken after the curing process so you may or may not end up with the color you thought you were gonna get. Good luck!

Why do we need to mix the lye and oil when their temp. are close?
truly0phinoy 5 months ago
@truly0phinoy I do it this way because I find that it all works out better for me as far as the final soap product when the mixtures are close in temp. Feel free to do some additional research and experimentation. Good luck!
TheCraftyGemini 5 months ago
@TheCraftyGemini And one more thing.. is the soap gonna get hard if we will just leave it in room temp without doing anything? our first try was a little failure...
truly0phinoy 5 months ago
@truly0phinoy The soap does get hard even if you leave it at room temp. All I do is cover it and leave it like I show in the video. You have to make sure your recipe is done to the T. You cannot substitute any other oils if you are following the recipe I show you in the video. Everything must be exact and be using 100% lye too. It's all chemistry. If something is off it will not work and can be dangerous if you have active lye in your ruined batch. Don't touch it with bare hands.
TheCraftyGemini 5 months ago
Hi Vanessa. I have been watching videos on cold process soap making and yours was the best. I appreciate you taking the time to do this video. It helped me feel like I can do this. You were very encouraging. Thanks so much.

I think you forgot include to add the lye to the water, and not the water to the lye.

@oscurochu I did include that at 3:34.

Do you know at what point the lye becomes 'neutralized'? Is it after it is combined with the water, or maybe once combined with the oil mixture?? Thanks! Teresa M. ps is your new app going to expand to an iPad version soon? :-)
50tmack 7 months ago
@50tmack The lye isn't really neutralized until the soap is fully cured. So it's still active when mixed with the water and when added to the oils. Many soapers claim after the 24 hours in the mold most of the lye (some claim about 90%) is neutralized and still requires the extra 4-6 weeks for the remaining 10%. I have no problem handling 24-hr soap with bare hands but you can wear gloves to be extra safe. You can download my app on your iPad now! Just search for it in the app store. :o)

Pretty sure that soap at a store costs a lot less than the...
Digital scale, thermometer gun, lye + molds + oil costs
CakeILoveify 7 months ago
@CakeILoveify I don't make my own soap because it's necessarily less expensive... but because I know what is in it and I have complete control of the ingredients. :o)
TheCraftyGemini 7 months ago
Are there any other ways to make soap without use lye?
MrsBooker100 7 months ago
@MrsBooker100 There are actually no other ways to make soap without the use of the lye (or sodium hydroxide). There are ways to add your own ingredients and scents to soap that has already been made- called rebatching or using the popular melt & pour soap bases. Basically you can buy the soap base made already for you and then you add colors, fragrances, etc. That's one way to personalize your soaps without you personally having to deal with the lye. But it was used to create the base.

Could you use peanut oil? I love the smell of it!
BudgetMakeupBeauti 7 months ago
@BudgetMakeupBeauti Because every kind of oil/butter out there needs a different amount of lye to saponify (or turn into soap) you will need to run the new recipe containing peanut oil through a "lye calculator." When soapmaking you can NEVER just replace one oil in a recipe for another. This recipe was made specifically for canola and olive oil so the measurements reflect that. I recommend you do more research and do a google search for lye or soap calculator to plug in your oils of choice.
TheCraftyGemini 7 months ago
@TheCraftyGemini Thank you so much!!! I'll do a little more search find mostly almond, sunflower and canola oils in recipes...
BudgetMakeupBeauti 7 months ago
@BudgetMakeupBeauti No problem. Yea, there are some that are more popular than others. I found a site that has a peanut butter soap listed and uses some peanut oil here: soapnuts(dot)com/cp3.html Hope that helps some!

Vinegar. If you are messing with lye you want vinegar handy... instantly stops the burning.

Where can you get the lye? For the Pyrex Measuring Cups, can you reuse them?
lacageauxfolleslover 7 months ago
@lacageauxfolleslover You can get the lye at your local Ace Hardware or other hardware store. For the glass Pyrex measuring cup I have one specifically for soapmaking and another one for cooking. I'm not sure if it matters or not but I wouldn't risk it... just in case. Hope this helps.
