I got a perfect overlap in the observatory yet it still wasn't good enough...so I looked the solutions up and I was only a tiny bit off...really want to finish this without consulting guides.....am I a cheater????

don't worry about it. only a tiny little thing like that is NOT cheating. however, if you used a cheat to get through the WHOLE thing, or half, or three quarters, well then, yes.

Thanks. In the myst games sometimes you know the logic behind the solution but the puzzle is so fine-tuned it can take ages.

Also, the notch positions change each time you play the game. And finally, make sure you are trying to set the notches in the proper tower.
