  • Fabulous, timeless, amazing,,,, RIP Don, the world is missing you.

  • I especially love Don's harmonica playing on Sure 'Nuff 'N' Yes I Do

  • This is one of the greatest sins of humanity that this video is not playing right Youtube...

  • Awesome song and a genius band! These guys were bringing HARD for the 60s!

  • I love this I love Beef I love with all my Heart and I love you like a brother but why rip beefheart? He lives forever now in my extensive collection and here on youtube... as long as we got ELECTRICITY we got beef in our hearts for society. Great Job!! Keep on spread the word like beefheart wanted... He just wanted success. He thought he had it made with Zappa, at first... woo boy! And of course, as fate has it, elusive success drove him mad. Mad like a fox!

  • @GARIJPUNQ I amend that comment.Long live the Captain!

  • @GARIJPUNQ

It is Alex St Claire (RIP) Cooder had left after the Captain appeared with a gun. I suggest you look for the BBC documentry by John Peel - its all in there.

  • Had Cooder left at this stage is he on Slide Guitar here ?

  • nice day at the beach

  • "Electricity" features what is known in musical academia as a "Hat Knocker-Offer" groove (note the bass player's suddenly-AWOL topper!) : )

  • Although Im so sad that he's no longer with us, I couldnt be more happy that this is up on youtube ensuring that this mans genius can be appreciated for years to come!

  • Truly a Magic Band! - rhythm so off kilter, but you can still groove to it like that bassist! Who says blue men can't sing the whites ;-)

  • looks like this was filmed on a different planet. unreal.

  • i assume you live in the midwest... that's what us flipperfolk call a beach...

  • Unreal, if you could grab a band from the future and send them back in time this is as close you'll get.

  • @honeysucklebommie, no, that would give us lil wayne in the late sixties.... the idea is there, just think it through

  • Ha, I meant that this crew standing there listening must of wondered what just landed on their beach!

There was nothing like it , there never has been since, there never will be again. I stand corrected kind sir: "A magic band, from a different dimension then" ;-)

  • can any one get this performance on cd/dvd anywhere?

  • It comes on a CD-ROM from the 5 disc 'Grow Fins' book set. The CD-ROM might not be compatible with your computer. I'll probably take ti to the shop to get it converted to DVD formatting someday. If I remember properly, there are 5 songs representing a cross section of his career. The disc also has an audio track that works on CD players with a story telling with the song 'China Pig' playing in the background.

  • magic cats

  • First time I heard electricity my power went out for 2 days. Had this song stuck in my head the whole time

  • Yes. Ry Cooder has a feather in his hat -just to the right of the Good Captain

  • Thought so, thanks for the data.

  • Not Ry coder here sorry...

  • Is the slide player in this video Ry Cooder? I know he recorded in the "Safe as Milk" sessions but don´t know if he ever was part of The Magic Band, is that him?

  • The essence of alternative! :]

  • that's an interesting gig, having the band on the beach below the crowd

  • So many memories, I wasn't even there. Every teenager should exerience Trout Mask in 70's headphones (coil flex of course).

  • Seconded... aah, coil flex - whatever became of that? Isn't modernity crap?

  • Just nothing short of Pure musical genius nothing more nothing less

  • What a fine day in May that was.

  • It takes a superb musician to play sloppy like The Magic Band.

  • @dylanfan1969 You said it best.

  • This really came out well, especially considering the limited dynamic range of 8mm sound film.

  • Actually, I guess I spoke too soon. Now I see it's an apparently more elaborate production than a single amateur camera.

  • I love this! Thanks for putting it up, shockingred

  • cool

  • Is that Vanilla Fudge at the beginning?

  • "Sure 'Nuff 'N' Yes I Do" sounds a lot like R. L. Burnside's take on "Rollin and Tumblin".

  • classic Beefheart!!!!Thank you!!praise you!!!

  • I reckon those Cannes residents dont know what to make of the Captain!

  • Bloody right too! They looked so pastised! They don't count. How could they ever?

    Cheery-by!

  • who do?

  • this is so good

  • Music In Sea Minor!

  • Did you mean Deep Blues Sea? :)

  • Nah, lest I be saying what you already know, there is a 10 inch mini-LP called Music in Sea Minor the cover of which is a still from this performance. But I see from your smily you already knew this!

  • No I didn´t. Thanks for the Info. I thought about a little Word-Game in leaning to that Traditional "Deep Blue Sea" writing my comment.

    Regards Phil

  • Safe as Milk is a Compilation It's from the Unconditionally Garunteed album! Great stuff. Bongo furry colaberation with Zappa is fantastic if you ever get the chance to see it.

  • I have Unconditionally Guaranteed and I can't see either song on it. Plus, it came out 7 years after Safe as Milk. :)

  • Both songs are from Safe as Milk, which was actually Beefheart's first album. Highly recommended album, btw and probably Beefheart's most accessible album.

  • Beefheart is the best there is...i was shocked to find some beefheart vinyl at my local newbury comics...naturally i bought a couple

  • i think that is why we have it..shango

  • Wow, this is fantastic. Probably shows how musically/artistically primitive I am, but I wish he'd kept going with this style for longer. I appreciate the innovation of the Trout Mask Replica stuff, but these early tunes are just great, some of the best and most distinctive blues playing of all time imo.

  • yeah this sound is fuckin awesome! surenuff n yes i do is also awesome like country rock blues all in one.Its a sound i been looking for all my life and i found it!.The mouth organ in surenuff n yes i do is far better than the album version like WTF how can a live performance be better than the album? that just kicks ass.the whole country blues sound is just orgasmic the slide guitar the miliatary confederate style drumming, choppy chords god why wasnt more done like this no disrepect to the cpt

  • zappa on the other hand is A GUITARIST before a composer which is why his tunes are always more "heady" with more notes specifically designed intricacies. with beefheart the intricacies were spontaneous and wild. they both sprouted from similar philosophies but took different approaches. zappa's being the snobier of the two which gives his fans some sort of disgust for the destructive nature of beefheart's compositions. as you can see in this page

  • zappa fans are such douches lol intellect is not measured by your knowledge, rather how you use it. and yall are using it to berrate electronic avatars! lol this whole "who's the talented one" business should have a stop put to it. the truth is beefheart's a crazy tyrannical maniac who got shit done in ways no one before him or after did, only a composer and artist.

  • Remember Pierre Lattès ?

  • Yea I know Pierre lattes, he set up Amougies in Oct 1969. He paid Zappa $10'000 to come over with the magic band.

What I want to know, where is Pierre lattes?

he can contact me on deepindercheemaATgmailDOTcom

  • Handsome cabin boy is a folk melody which came into the mothers of invention's repetoire via Elliot ingber(AKA Winged eel fingerling)It is Elliot who played the nifty guitar on the mother's Version and was of course a member of the magic band later on.

After the original mother's broke up, then we see Zappa's real talent which churned out

compositional wank and worn out after one listen humour, I don't dismiss Zappa, but after the mothers and hot rats it's slim pickings for me.

  • handsome Cabin Boy came from a Ewan McColl and Stan Hugil Lp on the UK label Topic. Topice had connections with the prewar communist movement in the UK and as a policy were very interested in the Folk revival in the '60s. To describe Zappa's compostitional talent as wank and worn out in one listen tends to betray the commentator as having the inability to comment anything other than fuck all here. Where does it say that Zappa was festooned with regrets and approbium regarding commercial activiti

  • Captain Beefheart and Zappa are both talented, they are both influential, but Beefheart had the guts to play live like this. Zappa hated this kind of attention. Beefheart also had a bigger fanbase, with T-Shirts, and commercials, Zappa never dared to put out T-shirts, and only put out one commercial, for Apostrophe, and he regretted it, saying it was the worst thing he had ever done, which was supporting the media. So tell me, who is better, Zappa or Beefheart?

  • KKKis gay..

You are talking absolute rubbish here. Begone for you are my intellectual inferior

  • Captain Beefheart is really awesome!

  • What a cool video.

Safe as milk kicks so much ass is like psychedelic bizzarreness within pop

  • The record to find is Lick My Decals Off, Baby!

    Beefheart at his peak!

Songs that are so good that they are almost pop...but of course they could never be...

I love Safe As Milk as well, this is brilliant and I do have super powers!

  • agree Decals is his finest

  • sho nuff'n yes I do. Awesome

  • Landed in the Heartland, it's somewhat like this in some places out here, no kidding.

    Most player's are 40 years

    older now,is all.

    No Ocean, red-clay and tornado's.

  • Holy Cap Hook.....The Captain , stranded again on some shore ,this time deliberetly.

  • It's the Captain's world. You are all just living in it.

    Long Live Captain Beefheart!!

  • This is awesome. Makes me wish I had super powers.

  • Anyone who doesn't like Trout Mask Replica should get Safe as Milk - it's his Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man to Trout Mask Replica's Ulysses. Or maybe Trout Mask is Finnegans Wake? Well, you get the point.

  • My god! People experimenting with music.... what a concept. What the hell has happened to us? This isn't crazy, it's actually art. I wonder if it would stand a chance on American Idle?

  • genius lol this is good recommended to me by my biology teacher
