1922 had nothing to do with Turkey having a strong Army. It had to do with political upheaval in Greece during the war and lack of supplies for the Greek forces. Without Ataturk or the lack of supplies for Greek forces or the political infighting in Greece during the war, your Country would not exist. The word Aegean is Greek just like the word Anatolia.

Exception are the Battle of Crete and the special operation in WWII, where they had to help because all war in Mediteranean sea was based on Crete's future, and loosing Crete was very importan for the British. In WWi and in Cyprus war ont only they didnt help but they provided info to the turkish amry officials. Especially in the Cyprus war.
