I'm saddened to hear of her death as I didn't know she had passed. I did a report on her back in 2005 during my senior year of high school. I have a great interest in the Holocaust seeing as the class I did the report on her was for it. I was the only one in the class that knew of her so it was all new to everyone else. Irena Sendler don`t act alone. She was activist of Żegota organization - polish organisation Council to Aid Jews. The branch was in Krakow, Wilno (Vilnius) and Lwow (L'viv). It is estimated that about half of the Jews who survived the war (thus over 50,000) were aided in some shape or form by Żegota. Żegota's children department, headed by Irena Sendler, cared for 2,500 of the 9,000 Jewish children smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto.

Irena Sendler wasn`t one: Witold Pilecki (1908-1948) He was only known person to volunteer to be imprisoned at Auschwitz concentration camp. While there, he organized the resistance movement in the camp, and as early as 1940, informed the Western Allies of Nazi Germany's Auschwitz atrocities. He escaped from the camp in 1943 and took part in the Warsaw Uprising. Pilecki was executed in 1948 by the communists.

About her surname.

My polish friend taught me that surname has male style and female style in polish language.

Surname of her husband was Sendler but her Surname was Sendlerowa.
