Parkes is working in the tradition of the 19th Century Neoclassical Academics. The Postmodern art establishment doesn't consider his work to be fine art but commercial illustration for the uneducated masses. They're wrong, of course.
@TheForwardGaze Thanks for the kind comment! Doesn't bother me what most critics say. History has proven so many of them wrong. I do answer a lot of questions on my art on my Facebook page if you are interested. Michael Parkes
Hello, I'm a big fan and love your work! How long do you wait for the paint to dry in between layers? Also what main colors do you use to mix your colors?
The secret is to paint two or three paintings at a time and in rotation it gives you four to six days for each layer of paint to dry sufficiently. The under paintings are done almost completely in the umbers with lamp black and titian white. Then the brighter colors, like the cadmiums, are glazed over the top. Hope that helps!
i work as an illustrator and i my university's style is all focused on brush strokes and visible marks for emotional effect but your insight is truly brilliant thank you
It is a pencil under-drawing with a wash tone overall with thin layers of color in oil applied afterwards. The highlights in white are in opaque white oil paint.
I found your lovely artwork two weeks ago and have just found you again. I am absolutely fascinated with your work, cant wait to see more. You are right about paintings talking to one another, this I do in my own studio...it translates into new paintings!
Thank you! In my work I want to create more beauty in this world. And it makes me happy to know that my work can create a space that is also peaceful. Michael

I think your art is beautiful. This from an artist that works in a spare room near a city. Your space is peaceful, and it translates into your work.
