  • HI, I've just bought a m-box mini digidesign to use with my symetrix digital voice processor for professional voice over service, how do I connect it up to work well with my voice processor?

  • you look and sound like chris martin

  • mine just records on any program..mabey cuz i got the new mbox tho

  • Wondering about the link from the mic to the computer. You have the mic into the large preamp and then that preamp going into the mini preamp and then into the USB of the computer? I was also wondering what type of connections the large preamp has.

  • i am realy want be like you guys, but those stuff you using, is very difficult to own, :-(( how i wish i could buy a cheaper one

  • No wonder I cant find it listed on Google Product search it was introduced in 1998. Looked it up on pdf file nice little funky device.

  • Love your stuff! Great video and great studio. I did want too ask - in order to have the versatillity in production without being limited to just "Pro Tools", would you suggest setting up 2 seperate systems? Meaning have one setup for "ProTools" and one lets say thats setup for "Adobe Audition". If I did, Im assuming also that I would have to have a preamp that has 2 outputs going to 2 seperate digital procesors (MBox & M-Audio box) ..?

Can the Symetrix 628 do a split out like that?

  • Really nice explanation. Thanks.

  • Would it be possable to do a demo with the Neumann mic WITHOUT prossesing? I was thinking about upgrading my mic and I know that the Neumann is one of the best in the biz. But I was wondering what it sounded like without prosessing though.

  • OK...question...when you did the video, your audio sounded a little flat. (I assume that was the web cam mic) But...when you did your demo, you sounded more base in your voice. Why? The processing or the mic? Or both?

  • it was the mic on the webcam i did the video with. but the recording was with the Neumann

  • I enjoyed checking this out. thanks for the info. all I have right now is a sennheiser mdr 422 mic going into an old cheap yamaha mixer, xlr to phono plug w/ an impedance xfr. I am thinking of getting new equipment , building a small home studio. I got a laugh when you read the copy. NJN! I was a tape op there in my hometown in trenton around 1980. maybe that's a good omen for me. i'm in denver now.

  • you got a really cool studio there man! awesome voice too!

would you recommend Avalon preamps for the neumann TLM103? that ones with compressor and eq included.

    peace!

  • Sure....Avalon is good stuff and would be very clean and warm sounding. ya cant beat a tube amp.

  • @danielp321

The Avalon You talk of.. It's great! It's one of the best Pre-amps I've heard for spoken word. (Remember that.. Spoken word.) I use it with another, more expensive, Neumann. It's great.

  • ERP of 1225 *Kilo*watts?

WTF kinda transmitter and antenna array do they have?

  • I have my home studio set up...not as high end as your equipment but it works for me...feel free to check it out...

  • yes i have in the studio. i like them. its a long mic though.

  • you are awesome dude.. i'd like to learn more from you!..

    God Bless!

  • why so crappy sound on this video if you have this gear available?

  • he explained it in the video. He couldnt use the mbox to input the audio into the video at the time without extensive post editing.

  • ok i didn´t get it the first time.... Sorry:)

  • you should use a analog to digital converter...like an m-audio product or a usb mixer. The sound cards that come with computers are not very good and an A/D converter will give you real clean audio.

  • I have the "thumbs up" from the radio station's engineer where I work for the equipment. He thinks it should do fine for the jobs I want to do. I should be up and running in about 2 weeks.

  • I have a question. I read on a sound tech board that the chain should be mic-mixer-compressor-computer. Do you have the processor running to the A/D interface then to the computer?

I am getting ready to make my purchases and was wondering the proper chain order. If I do it like the tech guy says, I cant use a USB mixer. I was going to go from mic to processor to a mixer with a usb then to the computer. Do you think this will work?

  • yes it will work....but be careful. The longer the chain the more your audio can suffer because the chain is only as strong as your weakest link. Make sure your using a good quality mixer and not a $25.00 crappy one.

  • Here is what I think I will work with, bear in mind that I have 2 kids therefore a small budget. Shure SM7 will go into a Behringer MDX2600 processor then to a Phonic Helixboard 12 into my computer (the phonic board gets better reviews than the alesis multimix 8 usb at the same price). I will also have a phone line connected thru another computer with phone interface software but that wont interfere with the chain, it will just plug into a seperate channel for some live broadcasting later.

  • I really appreciate your videos. I am just getting into VO after 15 years in radio. The changeover from radio to VO may be a year long process. I need to pay the bills so I am holdiing on to the radio gig for now. I have a question about the vocal processor. Is it neccessary? I noticed a nice difference in the processed voice compared to your other video and started shopping prices...wow...expensive. Ebay is a joke to try to win an auction on one of those, so I was wondering if it is neccessary.

  • It is not necessary at all unless your doing live radio. you can do everything that the processor does with editing. however it does save some time with editing if you have one.

  • I am looking for a used one...I currently am working on getting an alesis multimix 8 USB and want to add a processor to it to maybe do live internet radio at a later time, but for the VO work, I think the alesis board should be sufficient, unless of corse I find a great deal on a processor.

    Thanks for the reply

  • YES, you can use the Mbox with WHATEVER software your mac of pc supports. If it's not been done, you should install the ASIO driver (Windows) or CoreAudio driver (mac). Both are available from the Digidesign website (and should come with the original installation discs).

The only thing is that your computer will not recognise it once you turn on your PT software, in which case the Mbox will become exclusive to the PT system.

  • hey ...thanks for the Info.

  • He said why he doesn't normally use the sound card; it sounds like crap next to the Mbox.

I agree with you about the Mbox locking you into only Pro Tools, which I was not aware of... I knew that you had to use an approved interface with PT (Mbox, higher end Digidesign I/Os, some supported M-Audio interfaces) but not the other way around. Bummer.

Even so, you're still getting a good quality on these VOs.

  • In your broadcast voice section, that bass boost cant be just proximity effect? Did you boost the lows with EQ or use some type of bass enhancer plugin? Thanks.

  • the EQ for the lowers are boosed up a bit on the voice processor.

  • what if u just up the sound card

  • Always great to see someone elses VO studio set up. Glad you rate the PreSonus Inspire - I love mine. Thanks for sharing.

  • that's quite a good broadcasting voice you've got!

  • yea... ya know if you wanna buy me a neumann, i'd be happy to take it! nice setup, man!

  • I highly recommend the neumann.....its so choice.

  • No kidding!!!

  • Good stuff, man. The 628 sounds a lot better than the 528 or 528E, to me. I've never messed around with the 628, but the expander in your setup sounds a lot better than I've ever heard from the 528E. I didn't know that the 628 had been discontinued. I like the attack on the compressor, too.

  • Thanks for the comment Emmett. I don't think there are many 628's out there. although its much different then the 528E, I think it looked to much like a 528 to warrant its $1100.00 discounted price tag. The AirTools 6200 is now its replacement.

  • Thanks for the info,,,
