Boom. I got it. Took a few times, but hearing it as cubist, hearing it as a word portrait of him and his cubist view, hot damn! Very cool poem. Conceptual! I just stood back and let it into my ears!
I found myself laughing when we were studying this in class earlier, but now I can't stop reading it/listening to it. There's definitely an aesthetic appeal.
it is said that in Picasso's life time, he produced over 22,000 works of art.. which includes everything from finished drawings, sketches, doodles, paintings, sculptures, ceramics and mosics....
You have got to be kidding me. Is a Cubist painting pretentious? Do we not get lost in trying to describe what see? The rhythm of words is like the alluring maze of a Cubist surface.
There is some disconnect here. The original comment is "He's great." Meaning the cubist painter (Picasso). The original comment is not about the painting being pretentious. The painting is not pretentious. Still, something here might be.
As far as I am aware of, yes. They're in chronological order too. (I think/hope.) Picasso did a portrait of Gertude Stein - she is the lady wearing black.
yes, he did a portrait of her...this poem is a repsonse to his portrait of her..as Stein was an artist with words, this was her portrait of him. 1:06 is his painting of Stein.
A limited Vocabulary, but the overriding ambition sounds totalitarian-typically of wealthy Americanos.Stalinist spy ?

If you hear her snore
It is not before you love her
You love her so that to be her beau is very lovely
She is sweetly there and her curly hair is very lovely
She is sweetly here and I am very near and that is very lovely
She is my tender sweet and her little feet are stretched out well which is a treat and very lovely
Her little tender nose is between her little eyes which close and are very lovely
She is very lovely and mine which is very lovely

This is fascinating, hearing her actually recite this.
According to Harold Acton's autobiography Stein gave a recital to our own Edith Sitwell at one stage. Sitwelll was bemused but fascinated.
I had always envisioned the rhythms as being more percussive though. Fascinating.

I was going to type out the words for you but then thought better. :D
She actually does have a point though - she was trying to use cubism.
