there was an update to this story i read a year ago, all the kids went back to the school one of them is studying in america right now at a private school! the real smart boy with the strong personality
so sad her mom took her out of the school :( everyone sucks. seriously, how could they treat their children like this? they're so selfish sometimes....i love the boy that's like: 'i want to go to university!' at the end....i really wanna help!!! JOIN AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL!!!
I don't think there's a person out there who would take the time to watch this documentary and actually find it "entertaining" like frickin' Transformers or some junk...I personally found that this film to be quite moving...it was troubling to see the horrible lives these children lead...the abuse, disgusting living conditions, prostitution...but it was unbelievable how they managed to maintain such positive attitudes through it all...such happy souls. So that's my two cents...
Usually, the girls are born into families who have relied on prostitution for survival for many years...their mothers are prostitues, their grandmothers are/were prostitutes. It's a way of life...the only way of life they know. Often the fathers are addicted to drugs and it's the women's job to prostitute so that they can afford their habits. It's awful. From a very young age these girls know that they will have to go and work in "the line"...it's only a matter of time. It breaks my heart.
Whoa, guys...can't we all just get along? Really, guy1112orkut, aren't you being a little unreasonable? If ToughCookie01 had said I loved this documentary, would you still have been pissed off?
how is that useless, when "such a good movie" or "aunty is smoking cigarette" passes by you. Its called the internet and the ability to comment, get over it.
it is not a 'movie', it is a documentary, there are no 'actors', but real people who are suffering because of their circumstances, and if you found this 'movie/film' entertaining than you totally missed the whole point of it. my advise to you is stick to your bollywood sharukh and bullshit for your entertainment and dont insult suffering of puja further by saying how you loved it.
First off, before you start typing assuming you know what my intentions of this film, you should know I know WHAT it is, I have been in this AREA and i know the IMPACT on the people of India. So finding something worthwhile doesn't mean you think its fake and acting, the film was done beautifully to capture the red light district in India and there is nothing wrong to LOVE what you just saw, if you understand how to be critical.
You don't my "taste," clearly a Bollywood lover would spend this time all over this doc...( I am being sarcastic) Anyone who is in love with Shah Rukh would not be spending there time here, watching this trailer and even if they are, you are missing the point of this entire movement. So first off, think before you act. Because of people like you, the true meaning of this film will not be told, if you backlash people who took the time to watch it. Thanks I know for sure idiots exist on Youtube.
I always feel she chose the wrong kid to get grant.. she was in a brothel... where girls are forced into prostitution.. she should have chosen a girl to get a passport and pursue travel abroad.. what did Avijit had to lose? Even if he didnt made it to school... maximum it would have turned out for him was to be a rickshaw walla, a servant, a pimp or a crook.. he is a guy.. he is not supposed to get 'in the line' when he grows up..
"This film is a chronicle of filmmakers Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman's efforts to show that world of Calcutta's red light district. To do that, they inspired a special group of children of the prostitutes of the area to photograph the most reluctant subjects of it. As the kids excel in their new found art, the filmmakers struggle to help them have a chance for a better life away from the miserable poverty that threatens to crush their dreams"
Apparently the families of those kids didn't get a cent from the movie and it was an academy award winner! It was really unfair but fortunately Avijit got a scholorship or a grant or something to attend university.
