As far I can understand, it is a 2.3 shakuhachi. Are all shakuhachis of this lenght pitched in A? And what do you mean, Perry. Is it really pitched in a true A or tuned with iteself in a more or less A?
Here is a quotation from Aldous Huxley that can be meditated on:
"After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music"
Thanks for your videos, your work and your concern for those who suffer.
@Hydrargyre81 Thanks for the very good question. There are 2 ways to categorize shakuhachi flutes - the old way by lenghth is seisun and the modern way by key - seiritsu.
The Western pitch is dictated by both the length and diameter of the bamboo. Some piece with a larger diameter will be shorter and pitched in A, like this 2.3. Since bamboo and people are individuals, the absolute pitch is controlled by the player, like a violin.
@NinjutsuLives Hocchiku translates as Darma bamboo and it's usage was introduced to Honkyoku by Watzumido. This flute can be categorized as Hocchiku due to the natural condition. But, Watazumi's approach is philosophical. This flute was not crafted in this respect. It can play Watazumido Honkyoku called Dokyoku but not with the expected dynamic range. This flute was made as a fully functional, well- tuned mediation flute in my Earth Model line.

Hope this helps.

Beautiful! This is the same as hocchiku, too, right? Is earth model another name for it? Nice playing, also.

@NinjutsuLives In theory yes, but the Hocchiku is usually made of root end bamboo. Earth Models are usually non root.
Thanks a for listening!
