@kakompo Uh, those Israeli planes were not spying on the Liberty, they overflew it while hunting for Egyptian submarines. They were often sloppy: They bombed one of their own armored columns and almost shot at their own torpedo boats off Tel Aviv.

@kakompo Like I said, their main objective was to hunt down enemy submarines. However, a Nord Noratlas filled with surveillance equipment did make a reconnaisance pass, and identified the ship as the USS Liberty, and a green peg was stuck on the Israeli general staff's monitoring board. It was removed five hours later, following protocol which assumed that the ship had passed.

The Israeli Navy then dispatched a squadron of three torpedo boats, which detected a target moving towards Port Said, but miscalculated its speed, so they gave chase and called in fighter cover.

The formation leader, Captain Iftach Spector, made an identification pass, and reported that it looked to be a Hunt-class destroyer. He could not see the U.S. naval ensign at that height, so the planes strafed the ship with rockets and cannons. They were followed by two Dassault Mystere jets, which dropped napalm on the ship.

@kakompo One pilot reported seeing Latin markings, after which the IDF General Staff ordered the attack suspended, and sent to helicopters to search for survivors. Then, the torpedo boats arrived. Captain Moshe Oren, leading the squadron, could not see a large U.S. flag that had been hoisted to replace the shot-away naval ensign, but instantly saw that it could not be a combat ship. He could see very little from the smoke, and concluded that it was the Egyptian supply ship El Quseir.

@kakompo The torpedo boats tried signalling the Liberty, but the crew could not see it that well due to the smoke, although the Captain saw Israeli flags. Liberty then shot at the torpedo boats. One abandoned machine gun fired due to ammo cooking off, while another sailor fired a short burst before the Captain ordered him to halt. Captain Oren then received permission to retaliate from naval headquarters, and the boats fired five torpedos, one of which hit the ship.

@warpedcomedy mmm interesting. There was no "accident" on that day and that's what I believe. The captain of the Liberty was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor IN SECRET. The first and last of its kind in US military medal ceremony history. I guess you have an explanation for that too. huh?

@kakompo Simple: He was not SECRETLY awarded it, although instead of the White House, he was given it in Washington Navy Yard, and the medal was presented by the Secretary of the Navy rather than the President. Although the attack was an accident, the U.S. did not want to further embarrass its ally, so it tried to make it as discreet as possible, since it would prefer the whole thing be forgotten.
